First oil change late this afternoon after work, asked the service advisor if they had done any previous RX8 oil changes and he replied, yes, lots of them. I didn't look at the paperwork until I was home, yep, they put in 5W-30. Has anyone had any experience with this weight oil and did it cause any problems? Thanks.

Its standard on UK RX-8's to have 5w-30.

The only difference is the temperature range the oil is good for operating under - and there isnt that much difference - unless you get realy hot/cold there (not sure which end of the range is difference - info was in back of rx-8 manual).

I couldn't find any reference to 5W-30 in my manual, only 5W-20 in a few places. I called the service advisor this morning and he gave me a crock of B.S. I think, said the computer is defaulted to print out 30 weight oil for all weights....

At any rate I am not going to worry about it, its not a big deal.

I was told that the dealership gets 5W-30 in bulk and that its an alternative weight for all mazda cars. They said they'll happily put 5W-20 if i bring my own.

Hmmmmmmmm...... Could 30W affect the mileage?

if 5W-30 does affects mileage it would be in a negative way since its heavier than 5W-20.

I know that, you silly boy. Perhaps the mileage people are complaining about might be improved with a lighter viscosity- especially in the dead of winter.
