Hi

I am new member here and happy to say that I really enjoy the knowledge base that we have on RX8club.com.

I am a 2 stroke engine fanatic ( motorcyles) and love the rotary engines:rock:

I am in process of getting a RX8 and need your guidance, as its been 2 weeks I havent reached a decision(ADD may be) 3 months of search before that

I have 2 RX8(manual ofcourse) in finals list

1. 2004 RX8(Black) - Just went in dealership last week for new engine(under recall) single owner

2. 2005 RX8(white)- only 55k miles on it 3rd owner , clean title

Both are mechanically and Cosmitically good condition .Both deals are for around $11k and I am confused which to opt for.

Any guidance will be of great help

Thanks in Advance

On the '04, did the engine fail and is being replaced, or is it just now getting around to having an engine recall done? How many miles on the '04?

Also, do you have any info on other recalls, replacements, mods, etc that have been done on either of them?

Without that type info it is basically just making the decision based on color ha...

I'm assuming with the engine being replaced you haven't test driven the '04. Have you driven the '05?

Thanks Lateralus

So the update is the 04 car was put on sale and on the same day check engine light came up going uphill. Dealership checked the engine compression and suggested a engine change under recall. The owner is following up with dealership and its done now.

The car is stock with lady owner since 04 with all records.Only thing is I havent got chance to drive it.

I have driven the 05 and its in good mechanical condition. No problems whatsoever

I dont mind the color as for me Engine is the first criteria.

Expert thoughts please

Thanks in Advance

04 sounds better thus far. 3 owners seems suspect to me personally.

keep your emotions in check. neither of your 2 choices is acceptable.
save your money and buy from a reputable private party on this list that has taken care of his 8.
11k for 'questionable' car ? hell no

He has a good point. 11k is a whole lot of money to spend on something you aren't positive about. And finding a really top notch RX-8 for a good deal is definitely worth waiting for... So if there is one of those two that you seriously love and think is perfect, by all means go for it. But don't think that you have to pick between those two if you aren't sure, cause another one will always come along...

Checking out the RX-8s for sale listings on this forum would be a good idea. There are some really good cars being sold there, and there are a good many cars for under $10k.

Keep us posted!

Keep looking! There are better choices out there.

Just to be sure... You do know the Mazda Wankel rotary engine is a four-cycle engine?

Thanks for the expert guidance.
@wankelbolt: Yes sir I know about wankel rotary. Thanks for the concern.

So finally i checked the 04 car out. Very well maitained. Single owner.
Always put 5w20 oil. The owner kept the oil in check. All the servicing done with same Mazda dealership since 2004.
There were small chips on the front bumper. except that everything was working in harmony.

Asking price was 11k . Got it for 9.5k

Thanks

Well done. That's a good deal for a completely dealer-serviced car with a new engine.

The car is stock with lady owner since 04 with all records.Only thing is I havent got chance to drive it.

This (in combination with the poor oiling of the early ECM program) is why it died: Lady driver didn't drive it hard. The engine must be red lined to keep it working right. Unlike a piston engine which dies when revved hard, the Mazda Rotary dies when it's not revved hard! Piston engines cruise around at 1000-3000 RPM. Rotary cruises around at 2000-5000. Keep it up over 6000 and it comes to life and lives longer!

A red line a day keeps the mechanic away!
