View Full Version : Bent wheel [pics] - how much of a concern to repair over replace?

I've been experiencing some slight vibration at highway speeds as of late and decided to have the wheels balanced to troubleshoot. The right rear wheel was discovered to be bent on the inside! :(

I think a nasty pothole might have caused this within the past two weeks. The bad news is that these wheels have been discontinued for about three years, so finding a single replacement is going to be nigh impossible.

I like to occasionally do autocross and HPDE events every (other) month or so, and am concerned about the integrity of the wheel should I choose to have it repaired.

Take a look at the pictures below and please share your opinion on how severe the wheel might be compromised if it were repaired. Should I instead go on a quest of finding a single replacement wheel? Go ghetto-style and replace a pair? (these are my daily driving wheels) Buck up and get a new set of wheels? These wheels weren't cheap as they were, and if I did get replacements, (would rather not for sake of money) I'd want something equally light-weight.

All comments welcomed, thank you.

I have one 1-pc earlier version that otherwise matches what you need

figured sooner or later somebody would need a single

I'd seriously look into some stronger wheels for daily driving - RPF1's, RP03's, etc.

You could get by with a repair, I did on my bent/cracked rim. but then again I dont use it to track, just DD

Apparently the damage is worse than it looks. The repair place gave me an update saying they might not be able to fix it. They say the dent isn't just in the rim, rather it seems to go into the whole side of the wheel. :( I should be getting another update tomorrow, hopefully with results.

TeamRX8, depending on the outcome of this, I may consider your offer.

Does anyone make a rally spec wheel in RX8 sizing?

Good news - they were able to fix it. I'll be picking it up tomorrow.

Be sure to have the tire shop give it a spin on the balance machine first to check how true it runs before you mount the tire on it. You should do this and a visual inspection with every tire change from now on.

They might have already mounted the tire and balanced it (I've been running on my winter tire set ever since). I will probably ask them to give it a spin when I go pick it up.

I'm pessimistic enough to think they might have even mounted the tire backwards -- hopefully this is not the case.

Yes, plenty.

Compomotive comes to mind first.
