View Full Version : S2k to RX8???
CHUCKIE S2K 01-29-2004, 09:31 PM Can i go from my 3 1/2yr old S2000 to an RX8??
Before the S2000 I had a ser 6 RX7 and life has never been the same (power wise)!!
Saying that the S2000 is so much more reliable only ever having to go back for one thing (gearbox) on warranty. the Rx7 was forever at MAZDA.
But if I went to an RX8 am I getting a better car? Just interested to get your opinions.
Has anyone here run an S2K in OZ?
Probably pointless asking the question about if it's a better car here... ;) no one will say the S2K is better. For what it's worth, they're a dime a dozen now, so at least the 8 is more exclusive, for now.
takahashi 01-29-2004, 10:55 PM I will say S2K is better if I am still single I will go for S2K. Now I have to think about my little one when they arrive! :p
racerdave 01-29-2004, 11:17 PM I'd have to say the same. If I didn't need more room than a 2-seater provides, I'd go with an S2k.
But since I need more space, the 8 it is! It's the closest thing to a 4-passenger S2k that there is. :)
I'd say the RX8 is better. The s2k uses variable valve timing - nice throw yourself backwards power boost when it kicks in with the associated raucous noise. The Rx8 is super smooth, no fuss, and almost as quick. From the s2k I have driven, the RX8 certainly handles better.
Besides. It is a rotary.
CHUCKIE S2K 01-29-2004, 11:49 PM what about mods, the S2K is limited with nat aspirated mods because its already been strung out like a horse.
How about the local RX8's? Many mods available
takahashi 01-30-2004, 02:48 AM You have not been to Japan Chuckie?
S2K got HEAPS of mods.... gee I wish I have 80K and I will mod from front to back and get it to a light weight 300ps noisy thing.
if i was younger, then i'd pick the S2000. honda engines are very reliable and the VTEC sound is awsome! two seater setup, grab the mrs/gf, put the roof down and go for a long drive on a summer afternoon......... the interior space is usless, where are you going to find extra spaces for a couple of jumpers in winter? i had similar experience with my mr2 turbo, great car, but f*ck all space. gave it to my younger brother!
the 8 is a great car, it looks great, setas 4 people pretty well, great engine, especially the rotary sound and the smooth manual gearbox! and the best of all, it is still quite new on the australian market.
have you considered the 350z? it corssed my mind, very briefly (even though it has shit loads of power), cause my previous car was an audi tt coupe and they look very similar + i a mazda person. the 8 is my 3rd mazda so far.
just my $0.02
eric
The fact that the RX8 features in conversations with s2k's and 350z's underlines the fact that it is very special. The RX8 can hold it's head up in sporting company, carry four people and bring home the shopping.
2 seaters are very limited, been there - done that...
racerdave 01-30-2004, 07:17 AM There may be scads of mods the the S2k, but they probably have to be about the priciest for HP/money ratio... as the gains are not something one gets very easily (save supercharger or turbo) because Honda really did their homework on it.
The 8? Ric Shaw is working on an ECU mod that seems promising, and I'm sure there are others. Do they amount to a lot of HP gain? TBA...
takahashi 01-30-2004, 07:38 PM HP is not everything dave. Otherwise everyone will be on to the V8 could n't you all? RIGHT? :P
i'm an x s6 owner.
My s6 was (i hade to admit) a better ride than the rx8. however the rx8 is sooo much for functional. the power is the same, i'm still as fast as my other mates rides as i was in the s6. Just the turbo feeling is something that's hard to lose.
racerdave 02-01-2004, 07:55 AM No taka... that's for sure.
My only point was that for the $$, S2k HP was hard to come by since Honda did all the tuning already. :)

Your kidding aren't you?

Interesting, I've still got my S7, and I reckon it is much faster than the 8
nope, im not kidding. my s6 when i sold it had 87,000 kms on it also, and was in a1 mech.
I'm still racing the same people with the same times consistantly in the 8.
sounds wierd, but in reality the s6 only has 7 or so more hp than the 8, and the turbo feeling is actually throwing you back just as much as the n/a.
I'd love to race an S2k in the 8. I've beten a few in the rx7.

Your series 6 doesn't sound like it was in a1 mech.
I know when mine wsn't tuned it ran like a dog.
A well tuned series 6 should run 5.3 - 6 sec 0-100. true?
The Rx8 at very best would only be able to achieve a 6.2.
Has anyone run a S2K yet??
Does anyone know if the series 8 RX7's imported here are reliable?
MadMAX 02-02-2004, 08:08 PM Straightline performance does'nt mean it will be faster in a "race", unless that race is in a stright line! Balance and handling through the twisty bits is just as important. Power output is not the full story!
Cheers.

What times? what track? I'd love to believe you I really would.

Broker73 02-03-2004, 12:11 AM C & D did a test with a TT, 350Z, s2000, and Mach1
The s2000 pulled a 6.3 from 0-60 with a redline drop. And they claim 7.6secs for a 5-60 time?
Those are almost identical to the 8's, in fact, a little slower?
This was the 2003 s2000 I think?
Anyway, they are close, and throw on CZ's stage one, and you will surprise a few when they try to pull away!
