I mean,
DUH
Who the "#@$)*!@" wants "SAAB" anyway.
For some reason, I always connect the word "garbage" to "SAAB".
I would rather get a KIA than a SAAB.
oh well, bye bye SAAB :)
Huey52 12-18-2009, 01:16 PM But they're designed by fighter pilots .... ;)
CarAndDriver 12-18-2009, 01:29 PM Writing was on the wall once Koenig looked unlikely. An unglorious end to a quirky, distinctive and cult-loved automobile company. Hopefully, Volvo doesn't end up DOA.
mscamp02 12-18-2009, 01:29 PM oh well no more saab haha. Not sure to many people will be disappointed
pdxhak 12-18-2009, 01:30 PM That is unfortunate. Saab's are great.
alfy28 12-18-2009, 01:40 PM not sure why ppl hate there cars. but i always thought their designs are pretty clean. they have that Subbie look to them.
Jedi54 12-18-2009, 02:13 PM I never had a high opinion of Saab's until recently. A colleague of mine picked one up last year, we went for a ride in it and it's actually a GREAT car. Good looking on the outside, comfortable to ride in and has some get up and go thanks to that little turbo.
Problem is they could never really compete and properly market themselves to their target audience.
When I thought 'mid-level luxury sedan', the word "Saab" never once came to mind.
pdxhak 12-18-2009, 02:16 PM Jedi that is one of the great things about Saab. Well for the Saab enthusiast that is :)
I have owned two Saabs, 9-5 Aero (basically their high end model) and 900 Turbo Convert. Both were fairly quick and very comfortable and extremely safe.
josuar88 12-18-2009, 03:55 PM Had a ng900 loved it but sucks to see them go GM fcked them then raped them with a broom
CarAndDriver 12-18-2009, 04:57 PM GM brought them nothing but mismanagement and demise. Due to Ford and GM, Sweden will be going from 2 home-grown automakers to zilch. There go two of the more global brands representing Sweden. At least they still have IKEA.
Alexb 12-18-2009, 05:13 PM Everyone I know who bought a saab had it fall apart.
They look nice, but little pieces ALL OVER IT break and fall off. Even as recent as a 2007 model a guy I knew had. He had to take it to the dealership to fix stuff almost monthly. Windows would stop working, buttons fall off, rattly panels, etc.
They were just poorly made and that was a huge flaw for them.
As said earlier... quirky...
Wayne in Plano 12-18-2009, 05:36 PM Sad to see them go...I had an 89 SPG that was my most favorite of all the cars I've owned. I loved the feel of the turbo when it kicked in...had the big rear door, and could take out the rear deck panel to increase the trunk size (important for a family man with kids playing hockey all the time. Kept it for 8 years and passed it down to my son (it was the car he learned to drive on) He babied it for another year before it was stolen and wrecked. I've often thought about getting another one, but they're really hard to find now.

Pre or post GM meddling?
atruerx8racer 12-18-2009, 10:12 PM Gm = failure! Its all about the Imports!
nycgps 12-19-2009, 12:26 AM I think GM was the caused of failure.
Even GM itself its a failure.
Will GM learn? in my opinion, nope, they did not. look at that fuxking Volt *flame suit on*
oh well.
ZumnRx8 12-19-2009, 12:41 AM IDGAF..... My sis in law has a newer sab 4 door turbo... 2.5 i believe and pretty much to me seems like a cheaper BMW... but the inside is nice! OH WELL...
I wonder what their federal government will do to stop SAAB closing down???...
Many workers left without a job..
kvndoom 12-19-2009, 02:54 AM This is sad to see.
josuar88 12-19-2009, 03:09 AM Well SPG's are very hard to find now a days its like looking unmolested WRX STI.
REsuperD 12-19-2009, 09:44 AM saabs are great, i was very very upset when i heard this, even tho it seemed inevitable. well, old saabs are great; the newer saabs show heavy signs of gm's neglect. i love saabs, and all the great saabs were in the past anyway. it is sad that the new 9-5 will probably never see production, or if it does it'll be wearing some gm brand badge and i'll want nothing to do with it =(

We will do nothing to stop SAAB from closing down, Our government is too smart to spend our taxmoney on a dead project.
It's a shame for the workers and the region (I live where SAAB is) but SAAB wasen't suppose to live.
Our government is going to educate and relearn the SAAB workers (alot of good workers, engineers etc) so they can start work in other companys instead.
I personally have never liked SAAB, I has always been a more of a Volvo guy.
But I feel for the familys that have lost their jobs, must be a shitty christmas for them. :-(
in the end if you don't produce a product people wants to buy then you have no Business.

Well, Ill agree with you. It seems to me that GM thinks the Volt will be their savior but at near 40k 97% of the US population cant afford one anyway. I know they plan on exporting a huge number of these and Id be willing to bet they will sell more of these overseas than they will here. I dont think this is the kind of car america wants. I wish these companies would stop being so stubborn and bring over diesel engines to the US market. They would surely sell better than the hybrid/electric crap.
Chad D. 12-19-2009, 02:57 PM Saab is now in the memory books with Saturn, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Geo, Hummer, Asuna, Bedford, Lotus.... GM surely doesn't stand for General Management.
Opel, GMC, Vauxhaul and Holden will be next i'm pretty sure and they will remain with Chevy/Cadillac/Buick/Daewoo

+1 on the diesel. but it just seems like the average american refuses to buy into diesels. they do really like hybrids, largely 'cuz of marketing, publicity, and the fact that it's new and pretty *green* high tech. i really wish they'd bring over more modern diesels. bmw and mbz are doing it but while they're excellent, they're also very expensive. vw seems to be the only one willing to do it affordably, and i'd get a golf tdi over a hybrid anyway. as for the volt, it's just a ridiculous car. it's a pretty decent idea, but the price is outrageous and it just doesn't seem like a product that makes economic sense for anyone. after this saab thing, i really truly realized how broken the corporate gm is and has been, how utterly utterly entrenched and broken. companies like this should be studied in schools
Earl the Pearl 12-19-2009, 05:16 PM GM as usual bit off more than it could chew by adding yet another division it did not have time or resources to dedicate to. It was hard to say what Saab really was or who it competed against.
The only half ways competitive model it had was the 9-3. The 9-5 has long been outdated and the half ass products GM added such as the rebadged trail blazer 9-7x and rebadged subaru 9-2x did more to hurt the brand than anything in my opinion.
I don't think Volvo will fall into this category. Their products are actually good and well designed thanks to Ford dumping a ton of money into them. They are actually considered a somewhat higher end brand unlike Saab.
Two of my buddies with 9-5s had nothing but problems with them. Both had an experience when the car would just die in the middle of traffic and had to be towed.
My 9-3 actually drove OK. It was peppy and fun to drive because of the turbo. It was cheap to buy and maintain. I sold it because it did not feel like a quality car: the doors were misaligned, the exterior plastics were peeling off at 4 years old, big gaps between body panels, funky clutch/shifter. The weird thing about the fold down back seats was to fold them flat you had to move the front seats all the way forward. Almost like the engineers messed up the car dimensions.
Sad to see them go. They are a unique brand with loyal followers. With some investment and a few improvements SAAB could have been a good option in the entry level luxury segment. I actually preferred either 9-3 or 9-5 to a Volvo XC70 which to me handled like a boat.

They will not be able to sell Volt ... cuz for the price, its a shitty, unproven car.
I mean how many "great" promises has GM made for the past 15-20 years? sure everything sounds great. but nothing worked and they got fucked.
But they never learned and never will, why?
Cuz our "smart" government bailed their ass out.
Saab is now in the memory books with Saturn, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Geo, Hummer, Asuna, Bedford, Lotus.... GM surely doesn't stand for General Management.

GM stands for "General Mismanagement"
or
"Great Mismanagement"

There are way too many stubborn morons in America who still think this way :
"OMG Diesel ? Thats only for trucks ! ITS VERY DIRTY ! ARGH ! HYBRID FTW !"
*sigh*
Volt ... someday, we can laugh about it like we always do to da Crossfire
newguy 12-20-2009, 12:37 AM oh well it should make picking up a used 9-3 Vector a bit cheaper now. I think its one of the best looking 4 doors out there, better than a bmw 3 sedan. Now Id love to have a Charger RT or Pontiac G8 instead but the snow here says no as long as I have the 8 for weekend fun. Its either a 9-3 H.O. or a Legacy GT for commuting when my dodge dies, it just turned 170k miles but runs like new and its been paid off for 2 yrs now so its cheaper to keep her.
zoom44 12-20-2009, 01:30 PM Spyker makes another bid for SAAB

nycgps 12-20-2009, 07:26 PM I like this comment
Saab has never been a big-selling car brand, but the recent global recession and news of the brand's possible demise have driven sales down to crisis levels. Saab's U.S. sales have fallen by more than half so far this year.
Winfree 12-21-2009, 12:15 AM Saab may be coming back there was a little ticker tape on it today (Sunday 20th - Fox News).
The volt and the electric wheel chair were promises made back in the convention, which I covered in the Granny Blog, but most of it got edited out as too political - but I covered those because they said exactly what they planned to do to the automotive industry and so far the promises have been kept!
tjbourgoyne 12-21-2009, 12:52 AM I always considered Saab a quasi-luxury car because overseas they were cheap decades ago but once GM got their hands on it they took it out of that market and tried to fool consumers in the US.
shazy 12-21-2009, 04:17 PM GM is gay.
The Corvette ZR1 only puts down 500whp out of the 631bhp it's supposed to have. So that's wat? a 20+ % drivetrain loss.fail.
Idk, I always liked Saabs. They are "dentists" car as Jeremy Clarkson calls it.
CarAndDriver 01-01-2010, 08:48 PM Despite extending deadline to Jan. 7th, Saab looks to be going the way of Saturn.
Symbioticgenius 01-01-2010, 09:45 PM We will do nothing to stop SAAB from closing down, Our government is too smart to spend our taxmoney on a dead project.

This has GM written all over it, and they still got our money.
nycgps 01-01-2010, 10:40 PM Lets see how Volt will make it to the top of the "biggest flop in vehicle history" real soon.
CarAndDriver 01-03-2010, 03:02 AM Read on Autoblog that GM may turn the upcoming and done 9-5 into a Buick and Opel if Saab goes the way of the dodo.
CarAndDriver 01-27-2010, 08:03 PM Well Saab lives another day. Saab was sold to Spyker with financing help from Sweden & the EU. Hopefully they do something good with the brand. GM just trashed it.
I think there is definitely a niche for an entry-level Euro brand.
Razz1 01-27-2010, 08:44 PM Somebody was saved.
The volt should 1/3rd the size and 30k Max with all the luxuries. That's 26k base model.
nycgps 01-27-2010, 11:01 PM I have no idea why they want Saab so badly.
sure its a brand that "everyone" knows about, but is it worth it?
Seriously, right now at this moment, I would rather Buy a Hyundai Genesis than anything with the name "SAAB" on it.
Symbioticgenius 01-27-2010, 11:18 PM but its made by ppl who make Jets. Jets are just like faster cars
JUST LIKE.
P.S. The Genesis looks promising.
Can we just ask G.M. for our money back and tell them to go F themselves? This is seriously getting ridiculous.
