View Full Version : U.S. Mazda 2 Pics Released
zoom44 11-23-2009, 01:45 PM Only the 5 door hatch will be available in the States for the start. 1.5l with a 5speed MT or AT good for mid 30's combined MPG. they havent settled on iStop yet which could yield another 8%mpg.
Which is better than I heard before when they said they weren't going to use it here.
They are concerned that it doesnt add enough to be a real draw or conversely that people might expect too much and then be annoyed when it doesnt meet those illusions

CyberPitz 11-23-2009, 01:56 PM I actually like it.....
zoom44 11-23-2009, 02:03 PM Here's more on the iStop situation
Mazda's Davis told us that under the current test procedures used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, iStop would show a gain in city gas mileage would be no more than 0.1 or 0.2 miles per gallon.
Talking to the EPA
But Mazda's data shows that in heavily urban environments (think midtown Manhattan or Tokyo traffic), iStop can cut consumption as much as 8 percent. That could mean a boost of up to 3 miles per gallon, a far more compelling figure in the U.S. market.
The company is currently talking to the EPA, Davis said, about additional types of testing under which the EPA might let Mazda show an efficiency increase for the iStop system if it were fitted to the 2011 Mazda2. A rough analogy, he suggested, might be upshift lights; the EPA tweaks the ratings to grant an additional 1 mpg to cars fitted with them.
Would 3 mpg be worth $300?
Mazda might market iStop as a mileage enhancing option, Davis said, in those markets with the worst traffic--perhaps the cities of the Northeast Corridor, and the suburban sprawl of southern California--at a price around $300. Buyers could do their own math.
The sticking point right now, he said, is that under current regulations, any car must perform a complex series of diagnostic checks on itself every time the engine starts. That would be clearly impractical if the engine were starting and stopping once a minute or more.

Huey52 11-23-2009, 02:04 PM I want a MazdaSpeed2 (j/k) ;)
sephyobsessed 11-23-2009, 02:13 PM Wow the body style is somewhat reminiscent of the Nissan Versa, which I don't seem to mind too much...The whole istop program seems, a bit questionable. It would all depends on your driving situation. If you're a heavy highway driver, it seems a bit wasteful, but if you're constantly in stop and go traffic with lights and inner city ramblings, it may be a consideration. I like the bright green, very spunky! :yesnod:
rodjonathan 11-23-2009, 02:13 PM its pretty ok looking for sth that gets 30mpg
Jedi54 11-23-2009, 02:16 PM I was expecting better mpg. Doesn't the Euro version get a little diesel that does close to 50mpg?
dynamho 11-23-2009, 02:19 PM I want a MazdaSpeed2 (j/k) ;)

CarAndDriver 11-23-2009, 03:33 PM Hey I posted those already. :) My friend hates the new Mazda fascias but thought new US 2 was ok.
Gr8Bullet 11-23-2009, 03:44 PM it would be good for a DD. but it needs to be tricked out! Im not diggin the stock form...
MattMPS 11-23-2009, 03:47 PM 1.6 litre diesel 56US gallons combined mpg
BTW 1.6 diesel is a 100% Ford/PSA engine. Not build in Japan.0%Mazda.
zoom44:i dont' think that those photos are related with US spec model. tailghts are different.
Gauge 11-23-2009, 03:56 PM Now imagine one of those with 400rwhp..our crx! lol...too little for me
Gr8Bullet 11-23-2009, 04:01 PM in a way it looks like it could be a rally car.

nvrfalter 11-23-2009, 06:02 PM what a beautiful little car. i've loved it from the beginning. can't wait to see it out on the road.
Rotr8 11-23-2009, 07:05 PM This little car will be mine,,, I just aske the Sales manager about this past weekend and he said he heard that they will be in middle spring, which is a whole lot more optimistic than what Ive read online, but we'll see,,,
How fun would it be to cram a Rene in it too,,,
Wert4580 11-23-2009, 08:13 PM Haha, you used the "d" word! Funny!

RIWWP 11-24-2009, 11:04 AM Hrm, think I am going to work on convincing she wants a 2 over a 3. Probably doable, since the only car she has talked fondly about was her Tercel, mainly because it was so small. This is like a better Mazda version.
I did notice that the red pic has 2 doors, the rest have 4? Is there actually an option between the two? Or is that a concept or 1-off or not available here?

i think they will be 2 versions. at least in jpn, they sell 2 and 4. hopefully US follows the same.
DubbsLuvs8s 11-24-2009, 11:14 AM Hmm...when can I get one used???
ZumnRx8 11-24-2009, 11:14 AM cant wait till someone TURBOS one of these puppie just like the HONDA FIT
RIWWP 11-24-2009, 11:15 AM Is it just me, or do the wheels on the silver one look tiny...with that kind of fender gap. I generally don't notice fender gap or wheel size, but...that is kinda glaring.

i think those are 13's. the ones i seen jpn this past summer had 15's. they look really good fixed up.

sephyobsessed 11-24-2009, 12:03 PM ugh chrome....and spinners, I feel the urge to vomit every time i see an Escalade with that shit roll by.
I DID however laugh myself to tears when i saw (I kid you not) a Hearse with chrome spinners...I don't know who would have the audacity, but i guess a gangsta wanted ta ride in style...or....die in style...
ZumnRx8 11-24-2009, 12:04 PM what wheel gap? :dunno: ur version of the 2 for me ... is not what i would do :uhh:...:suspect:
alfy28 11-24-2009, 12:05 PM gahh, i kid i kid
Gr8Bullet 11-24-2009, 12:15 PM cant wait till someone TURBOS one of these puppie just like the HONDA FIT
i ve seen this in person. i think it kinda defeats the purpose of the car. turboing a fuel saving car...
ZumnRx8 11-24-2009, 12:21 PM .......so does turbo'ing a honda fit and toyota yaris.....and civics... etc.... etc... its beast though when u can pull up to a civic thats rice and smash them in a TURBO YARIS
Chad D. 11-24-2009, 12:27 PM I prefer the look of the ford fiesta.
2 just looks like a scaled down 3.
I don't know if it will fit all the fat pandas in the Americas
Gr8Bullet 11-24-2009, 12:37 PM it was funny cuz i raced the fit from a dead dig. i pulled on the fit threw 3 untill he passed me probly half a car. it was from light to light.
ZumnRx8 11-24-2009, 12:56 PM ^wow.....so he smoked ur asss?
longpath 11-24-2009, 02:50 PM Sadly, in order to have budget for the 2, I'd have to sell the 8, and that is not remotely on the table. It's a pity because I do like the 2 and would love to have one.
Gr8Bullet 11-24-2009, 02:59 PM ^wow.....so he smoked ur asss?
In my defence I had 3/4 tank of gas and 3 people in my car. He only had himself plus the weight of his car is less then mine and no he didn't smoke my ass. Half a car isn't smoking my ass. Lol
I wonder if the North American Mazda 2 will be made at Mazda's Ujina plant in Hiroshima Japan, or the brand new Mazda/Ford Auto Alliance plant in Thailand???
Any news Charlie??
77mjd 11-26-2009, 11:59 PM I love that green color!

MattMPS 12-02-2009, 03:52 PM a lot better than ASEAN market version (see start of topic).
My 2 cents: end of 2010 we get here in EU this version for restyling of 2.
TopGear8 12-02-2009, 03:53 PM I'm gonna buy one and put my RE30's on it for a DD :)

Take a look at the LA Show gallery. A pretty mean looking white one blacked out. Sorry for the pic size. Love the new 2!

Mazmart 12-02-2009, 04:48 PM Why does it have to green? YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE GREEN TO BE 'GREEN'. Don't they know that blue is the new green? I would definitely have done a different color but I guess they have commitees to decide these things.
Paul.
CarAndDriver 12-02-2009, 04:51 PM I agree - the Kermit color is unflattering esp. against the orange turn signals/reflectors. Admire the white one above.

As I was typing, tadah!:yumyum:
This is what I'm talking about. Beautiful. Mazda should show more in white.
Paul.
The GREEN was the 'Start" or new Model Colour (Color) Mazda always does...
The GREEN was the first Colour For the new Mazda 2 World Wide...
Just like the Celestial Blue was/is the start (all new) Colour for the new 2010 Mazda 3.
The Yellow for the RX-8...

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/12/mazda2lalive_21.jpg
CarAndDriver 12-02-2009, 05:09 PM Like the metallic gray one too, but even if that green is the global debut color doesn't mean its attractive. It's unflattering to a great car. But I guess they are trying to hammer Kermit Green as "environmentally friendly."
At least the new Ford had the sense to put the new Fiesta in flattering colors for the debut. The new Fiesta dash looks like a Transformer is ready to transform at the push of a button.
I wanted to see pics of the US Mazda2 dash but ZILCH. I'm figuring it'll look like the global dash with some tweaks here and there.
Mazmart 12-02-2009, 05:12 PM WOW!!!!!! WOW!!!!! And there I was complaining about the blandness. Mazda did everything I would have done and more. Now, I hope there ads are good and effective.
Paul.
REsuperD 12-02-2009, 05:29 PM i LOVE this! can't decide if i like the white one or the gray/green one more. probably the white one. i want one of these cars!!!
zoom44 12-02-2009, 05:30 PM just noticed the gray one has the non-NA spec tails with the clear/white ont he bottom instead of the top.
RIWWP 12-02-2009, 05:37 PM I love the aero of the speed2, not just a downward extension, but an actual mini splitter it looks like. I'll take one in white, that really looks hot. Seriously, I could see myself driving it. Not over my 8, but not shabby at all. Really nice.
My wife will be sold once she sees these pics, although she will still be wanting to see what blues are available. Perhaps a new blue color for the 2? I can't see them going with the Aurora, since it is R3 specific, the stormy, phantom, and winning are all phased out, and the electric has been around for the pre-2010s, haven't seen it for the 2010 colors yet. I guess celestial blue and/or the gunmetal blue? Both are new on the 3 for 2010, so I could see carryover. The gunmetal blue looks like a variant of the phantom blue. Or Kona blue, just found that on the 2010 6, looks like a variant of the stormy blue.
RIWWP 12-02-2009, 05:42 PM 4-lug wheels? Odd. I thought Mazda was strictly 5. Swapping rims between all the models was awesome, guess we lose that.
That works, just a little dull and doesn't do the car full justice.
Paul.
The GREEN looks better on the road, than in Pics..
Best colours are Chrystal White Pearl (my white ;)), True Red, Radiant Ebony (Cherry),Black, Metro Gey and Aurora Blue.
Specs..Notice rear DRUM Brakes (same here), IMO NO MAZDA should have rear Drum Brakes...for Pete's Sake!. Ventilated Disc's up front.
Electric Power Assist Steering, Space Saver Spare Tyre.
42 Litre Gas tanks, which is about 10 Gallons??
Rotr8 12-02-2009, 09:08 PM I love it, cant wait to getone with the chin spoiler of course,,,,
I think I might even do the same color scheme with the MS style graphics
Its a cute little car.
To small for my tastes. I'm really beginning to believe that small is the new cool.
RIWWP 12-02-2009, 09:34 PM Small is just a reverse of the 'bigger is better', since 'bigger' means 'more fuel'. Dropping weight (and thus, size), is the easiest way to boost performance. Granted, this won't be a pacement scorcher, but I think a very unique fun. Look at the reviews for the Honda Fit for a comparison I think.
CarAndDriver 12-03-2009, 12:57 AM It would have been nice to see the 2 fit with rear discs but gotta cut costs somewhere. No other US-available subcompact (Versa, Fit, Yaris, Accent, Fiesta) has rear discs and all have rear beam axle suspensions. The VW Polo rumored to be coming also has drum brakes and a beam suspension, although the Polo GTI has 4 wheel disc brakes. Hopefully the Polo GTI is brought over, but I doubt it. Hopefully, a Mazdaspeed2 with a body kit and upgraded hardware will make its way over.

my 2 is Crystal White Pearl......... but i agree that the Spirited Green is a FANTASTIC COLOR over the 2
fantastic the Cherry too.....
The Mazda 2 has a Torsion Beam Rear Axle..with the drum brakes..
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=148884&stc=1&d=1259831686
Mazmart 12-03-2009, 08:17 AM Why does anyone still use drum brakes? It must be a cost thing. These compromise suspensions are sad but hey, if it gets them in the desired price point then great.
Paul.
The Mazda 121 (DA,DB) (Mazda 2) from 1986 has a similar Torsion Beam set up.
The previous Mazda 2 (DY) was just a round piece of long pipe.
Latest 07 (DE) as shown (Page 3 here), but yes, naturally drum brake and Torsion Beam suspension is a "cost" thing...the Mazda 2 is a VERY light Cheap car..
Any Idea's on your Price (USD), a Honda Fit is $14K..
Remember this car is 3 years old..

RIWWP 12-03-2009, 03:32 PM I haven't heard a peep about price yet, but if the 3 "starts as low as" $16k, then I see the 2 being $14k. Possibly $13k, but I doubt it. $12k would be undercutting everyone but Kia, and I don't know that Mazda wants to do that from an image point of view.
"It's cheaper than a Kia Rio!" could be a very bad impression of poor quality.
CarAndDriver 12-03-2009, 03:52 PM I don't think that Mazda will price the base 2 with the stripper Versa and Accent. The compacts like the Civic and 3 start in the 15-16 for the bare bones base models. The Fit starts at $14,900, but everyone else stars much lower.
So I agree, may start in the 13Ks for the base model, but there will be a model in the $14s.

OK, here is a price comparison between the USA and Australia (at the moment our dollar is worth 92.5 cents to the US $1, not that makes any difference in Vehicle Prices here, we know we have always been "ripped" off, and the rest of the world subsidises the US :))...
Mazda RX-8 GT $32,710 ($60,598 AUD)
Mazda 3 Basic $20,290. ($24,717 AUD)
Mazda 2 Basic ????? ....($20,220 AUD) 4 Door hatch..
So,what could they sell the US Mazda 2 for??? $14-15K?? USD??
CarAndDriver 12-03-2009, 09:10 PM So,what could they sell the US Mazda 2 for??? $14-15K?? USD??
The base manual Honda Fit starts at $14,900. Mazda needs and has to price the starting models under that. You can start buying base compact cars when you get into the $15s.
The Ford Fiesta pricing starts at $13,320. I think Mazda will start in the $13s as well then.
Drumm09 12-04-2009, 10:14 AM Wow the Mazdaspeed version of the 2 looks Fantastic. Somehow the grille-smile is not as silly as in the other Mazda cars.
Race Roots 12-04-2009, 11:02 AM Looking good, this is a very popular tuner car to be Turbocharged in Europe and I believe I have seen some in SA as well.

MattMPS 12-05-2009, 05:11 AM after seeing the video stopping at some frame, in my opinion the interior is quite different than JDM/EU versions.....
any news about US engines/transmissions?
Matt, yes well the US are getting the face-lifted 'Happy' Mazda 2, in OZ we have not sighted them yet, so who knows this could be the update for all Mazda 2 for the new model.
I see a little bit of 'red' at the top of the console, could be the Hazard Switch (here it is black).
http://www.mazda.com.au/Models/Current%20models/Mazda2/Features/Interior.aspx
Chad D. 12-05-2009, 11:27 AM ...as for drum brakes. At least they are good in the snow/wet weather. My wife was driving the santa-fe at a slow speed through some snow in a parking lot, (obviously) the brakes were soaked/frozen and she slowly drove right into the car in front of her as she was parking. She told me her brakes were broken but I knew what happened. I used to get the same fade effect on my explorer sport when I would go offroad in the mud. Rear drum brakes are not that bad on an econocar. They are kept protected from the elements and are cheap. Most buyers of the 2 probably wont even realise it has drum brakes/or what drum brakes are.
-the interior of the North American 2 is whack. but what can you expect from a low dollar investment.
zoom44 12-06-2009, 12:41 AM Ok got the US engine tranny combo and it is on the US Mazda site now when it wasnt earlier
WE will have the 102 hp 1.5 liter engine with either a 4AT or a 5MT.

zoom44 12-06-2009, 12:44 AM Oh
Jeremy Barnes has offered to answer any questions you may have about the Mazda2. He'll be in Japan all next week but will be happy to answer what we've collected when he returns.
I've already asked for interior pics :)
zoom44 12-06-2009, 12:47 AM wow i hadnt caught this before
Mazda has a flicker Photostream. Tons of pics from the whole lineup and more in there
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mazdausa/
no int pics of the 2 there yet either
^^^ a correction is needed on the first 'flicker' page of Mazda pics...the last cream coupe is not an R130 of 1969-72, but a 'Luce" RX-4 Hardtop of 1976-78..:)
CarAndDriver 12-06-2009, 03:45 PM Found a pic someone snapped of the interior at the LA Auto Show. The NA interior looks pretty much like the global 2 unless things change between now and final production. The most noticeable changes seem to be an gauge style, instrument panel left of the driver is styled differently, a passenger airbag addition and some changes with the console between the seats. Not a good shot to see how the HVAC looks, but radio styling looks the same.

Rotr8 12-06-2009, 09:33 PM I like the upholstry on the seats of the US spec at the LA show...
CarAndDriver 12-07-2009, 12:13 AM Who me? Fixed. :)
nvrfalter 12-07-2009, 03:09 AM As I was typing, tadah!:yumyum:
This is what I'm talking about. Beautiful. Mazda should show more in white.

z0mggggggggg these are so cool
CarAndDriver 12-07-2009, 06:07 PM Has anyone seen it in person at the LA Auto Show?
YES..But not at the show...even driven one....
You will be very surprised at just how light and good this little Mazda is...IMO one of the best (and LONG overdue) moves Mazda NAO has done for decades..
It handles Sweet for a FWD, very light around corners, surprisingly quite (some road rumble or tyre noise depending on road surface), brakes are very good for a Disc/Drum combination..
For the price, the dash layout is simple and functional, I really like the stick lever in the console/dash position.
As I see this car will really HIT the MARK for young college girls, mums who don't have a second car and those on a tight financial budget.
In the two years it has been in Australia it is VERY popular and outsells the Fiesta by 2.5 to 1...almost 3 to 1 in some states.
You see we recognise "quality" over marketing spin, don't get me wrong the Fiesta is a very good car, but the Mazda just looks that much cleaner...and Zoom ZOOM!
I hope you guys get the 3 door, we got it about a year after the 5 door was released and I think it will be the same in the US.
This car REALLY has the potential to put Mazda right up there in the US auto market..
I just hope MNAO market the car right... :)
Rotr8 12-07-2009, 11:21 PM 3 door huh??? got any pics???

3 door huh??? got any pics???
Yes, one, can get more if you want...
Rotr8 12-08-2009, 07:31 AM Thanks Ash, looks good but I think for that small of a car the 5 door just seems more proportionate, thanks,,,
CarAndDriver 12-08-2009, 08:09 PM I like the 3DR as well. Wonder if we'll get a funky-looking 4DR.
RXLogic 04-01-2010, 11:36 AM USA specs are out:
http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/musa2/flash/garage/upcoming/mz2/microsite/pdf/Mazda2_2010_specs.pdf
There is one major disappointment in there:
Fuel economy (manual): 28/35
I don't get it. The 2l Mazda 3 is rated at 25/33. The UK combined imperial mpg rating for the 2 and 3 (with the same engines) is 50 and 37, respectively. The slightly heavier Fiesta gets 40 mpg with a 1.6 l engine. So why doesn't the US Mazda 2 get 40+ highway?
A dealbreaker if it's true.
RIWWP 04-01-2010, 11:53 AM The price is also higher than I expected. Doable for my wife, but it's high enough that price-wise it will be cross-shopped with cars another tier size up.
Rotr8 04-01-2010, 12:01 PM ^^^ yeah the price is what is going to keep me from getting the first model yr model. Its even in the price range of the 3 which is alot more car.
zoom44 04-01-2010, 12:29 PM well on the fiesta
Optional six-speed automatic (non-SFE pkg.) Projected 30* city/ 38* highway/ combined 33* Projected 30* city/ 38* highway/ combined 33*
Optional six-speed automatic w/optional SFE package Projected 30* city/ 40* highway/ combined 34* Projected 30* city/ 40* highway/ combined 34*
the dont have the actual EPA numbers yet. the Fiesta is using a 6spd MY or AT while the Mazda2 is using a 5spd MT or 4AT. Also note the projected 40 highway Fiesta is with the SFE(super fuel economy) package which uses a different rear dif and lower rolling resistant tires.
Ford will Advertise that higher number to death with small print explaining its only with the SFE paackage and in the meantime will sell mostly the lower price lower mpg spec cars.
But having said all that- Mazda needs that new 6speed in this 2 like yesterday. they need a higher number they can advertise.
zoom44 04-01-2010, 12:38 PM Starting at 14,730 doesnt seem high really. a Mazda 3 sedan starts at 16,500 or so. Honda Fit starts at 14,900. a Mini starts over 18,000.
RIWWP 04-01-2010, 01:46 PM I still want info on the MS2 :)
Mainly if it will come in automatic (bleh :( ) My wife can't drive MT any more, clutch causes her hip problems, but if the MS2 is available as an automatic, that is the one we are going for.

The Fiesta manual is a 5 speed, with 29/38 estimated mpg. I expected the Mazda 2 to do a little better than that.

Of course there will be an automatic. After all, this is America.
zoom44 04-01-2010, 02:35 PM http://www.greencarreports.com/blog/1043946_2010-new-york-auto-show-2011-mazda-mazda2-priced-at-13980
At the 2010 New York Auto Show today, Mazda announced that its 2011 Mazda2 subcompact would carry a low starting price of $13,980 when it arrives at dealers.
and i just noticed that the 2s mpg is also still estimated and without the actual EPA number yet.
but that 4speed is seriously holding them back. they need a better auto in there.
zoom44 04-04-2010, 01:32 PM several articles now saying the sky -g and new sky drive tranny will debut in 2011 in the Mazda 2. so add 15%- 20% on top of those MPG numbers once the new drivetrain hits next year :)
