View Full Version : How to make a 04 AT get at least 0-60mph 5.5 seconds?
Boom3k 11-03-2009, 04:13 AM what do i need in order to make my car get from 0=60 in at least 5.5seconds.
Please list what i need to do and in what order. money isnt a problem:fingersx:
2SeeKU 11-03-2009, 05:27 AM That ones easy.
1) Sell RX8
2) Buy a GTO + a harrop blower
Seriously, I don't think its possible. Fastest Auto l can think of would be Phil (supercharged 8):

Phil's 8 11-03-2009, 07:54 AM The 8 is not a straight line racer. Presently I believe that I may have the most HP of the AT 8s on this forum at 259. I have no idea what it will do in a straight line as an ET. Your existing tranny will support your effort as will the 4 port engine. Those are old pix - under the hood has drastically changed.
dillsrotary may have it right -
maxxdamigz 11-03-2009, 08:36 AM Well, you said at least 5.5 seconds, so I'm sure it's more than 5.5 seconds now!
5.5 doesn't seem like an unreachable target in the near future but it does seem like a poor goal to set when buying this particular car.

mike[piston eater] 11-03-2009, 09:42 AM maybe 0-60 km/h hehe thats reachable
The_Beast 11-03-2009, 10:10 AM If money isn't an option, and you wanna stick with the 8, why not buy a 6 speed?
mike[piston eater] 11-03-2009, 10:11 AM some people cannot handle a clutch lol
Mr.Rexx 11-03-2009, 10:17 AM Without going FI it will be impossible. The good news for you is that money isnt a problem Go with the Esmeril Turbo set-up then and I'm sure that it will get you where are you trying to be.
On the other hand, I think you bought a wrong car if you were looking for a straight line fighter... Trade it in and get a V8. :)

rodjonathan 11-03-2009, 10:22 AM oh lord some people the 8 is meant to drive like a dream and not necessarily be fast! ... oh fyi i think a gto will do under 5 secs easy i had a sced gto like 4 years ago in hs and it did 5 second 0-60s easily
chino0314 11-03-2009, 10:22 AM strip the entire car... and use all carbon fiber
and drop a turbo and nitrous
kersh4w 11-03-2009, 12:20 PM esmeril turbocharger.
you will get it below 5 seconds.
8 Maniac 11-03-2009, 01:30 PM this is a kind of arbitrary and specific goal. Is there another car your trying to keep up with? Do you have any other goals other than 0-60? Cause I'm sure you could do some stuff transmission wise that will get you as high as 60 mph really fast... no guarantees how much faster you'll be going beyond that though :p:

This I gotta see - show me please. In my experience the interceptor X will not allow shifting properly at any speed for an 4 port AT. Unless it just happened Esmeril could not use a flash tuning system. I have the most respect for Esmeril but only on MTs because of the tuning requirements.

You should already be there. But if you really want to make sure..and money isnt a problem you could always fill the trunk with gold bricks.
Transam kid 01 11-03-2009, 02:57 PM Do it downhill. Start with a 90 degree angle and let us know how it goes.

yeah, sorry. i did not really think about the shifting with an automatic.
time for a sequential swap. with all the money you've put into your car. i wonder why you dont.

I would do a sequential if they were available but I really don't care for a M/T as we know it. Just my prefrence...... Of course my 8 would have to perform like it was meant to have the sequential system. My car presently drives and shifts like it came from the factory until I ask for power:icon_tup:
Brettus 11-04-2009, 02:32 PM phil - have you tried getting a 0-60 time ?

No I have not - I'm quick but never timed. I guess the next time some one is here I can get them to stop watch it. Not very scientific but I do not know how else to do it.
Brettus 11-04-2009, 03:00 PM you can do it in a datalog ......
Phil's 8 11-04-2009, 04:52 PM you can do it in a datalog ......
Never even thought about that - My age is showing.
kersh4w 11-04-2009, 11:14 PM the end result of a sequential is an automatic. they have no clutch. you would not notice the difference around town, unless you got on it and noticed the lightening fast shift.

I have driven a couple of cars that have it and was very impressed.........not as smooth as one would suspect but it's early in the technology. Still a 100% improvement over the current systems both MT & AT. Too bad it's not yet available to the general market.
kersh4w 11-05-2009, 08:26 AM you can probably do a custom sequential setup for ~$10k. i talked to charles about it once and he said he could probably source the transmission itself for $5k, then add some thousands for install. the install isnt as simple as just bolting it up, since they need some form of electronic management.

He and I have also discussed this along with various improvements to the current tranny. The $ don't bother me too much but the "electronic management" would be a major problem. The AT currently has it's own management system and changing that along with interconnecting to our engine management system could be a real problem. Remember I said only if it performed like stock.
JTtheDude 11-05-2009, 10:10 AM Does the FEED final drive fit the AT? Would that shorten the gears enough, plus having all bolt ons? probably won't get sub 5.5 sec time like the OP wants but the tall gears in the AT I think hurt it a lot. I don't know how much the FEED gears would affect it. Anyone have the FEED on an AT?
kersh4w 11-05-2009, 02:09 PM it doesnt change how long the autotrans takes to shift though.
edit: might be worth following up to see about more info. quaife sequentials go for ~10-11k though.

JTtheDude 11-05-2009, 02:27 PM A better torque converter would be a must as well, to get a better launch. Invasion08 has one (plus trans) from level 10 but doesn't post any specs on it other than saying "it's better than stock" several of us AT owners have asked about the stall rate wondering if it is higher to get better launch but we never get a response to that question. if it's not any higher than stock then how is it any better? No offense to Invasion but the question never receives an answer.

That is why mine has not been changed. I have talked to a local shop that builds torque converters (and racing trannys) for the local racing group and they tell me that it is not worth it if I want stock type feel. They are working on a shift kit that will take out any (or most of) that slight hesitation that ATs have.

I think for my purpose, just getting a shift kit would be fine.
kersh4w 11-05-2009, 05:23 PM nice. a friend of mine has a built transmission in his z28. its been reworked to shift very quickly. and seeing as he ran 11.9, i'd say its definitely possible to get an autotrans to shift really well.
a sequential is on my list of mods though. however it has the dubious honor of being in absolute last place. haha. its there. but cost is too prohibitive for a broke college student. anybody need a design intern?
