View Full Version : Anyone use autopart store coils?
Targatheory 10-16-2009, 02:06 PM Like the title says. Anyone here have experience with autoparts stores ignition coils?
Specifically I am looking at the Kragen/O'reillys BWD coils. Only about 30 each and limited lifetime warranty. Thoughts?

Very good price I think. BWD is a good brand, and since our coils are not that great for our car to begin with, plus the lifetime warranty, I think this deal rocks. You can warranty out the coils indefinitely.
arghx7 10-17-2009, 12:00 PM I'd give it a shot. The factory ones are pretty bad, and there's a decent chance that these are equal or better.

Something to note when considering the value of coil warranties; a great number of RX-8 coils that go bad test within the specifications Mazda lists in the FSM. As such, when you try and return your BWD coils for a warranty claim and they test within specification, even though you KNOW it is emitting a weak spark, what do you think you will be told? Just be prepared with your best argument is all I am saying.

When i worked at autozone we never checked out any warranty items..... if they didnt work we would swap them out.. those duralast batteries are the only thing we tested and most of the time they were bad and if they were marginal we would still replace them.. but then again it depends on what store you shop at.
Targatheory 10-18-2009, 01:23 AM All said is very true. Autopart stores here typically don't check anything other than batteries for warranty issues; trust in customers' claim is all it takes.
I think I will try it out. And let's just say I have the hookup at an autopart store, so I think I'm positive I'll be safe even if they fail numerous times.
MazdaRX-8SPEED 06-01-2010, 05:54 PM any up date on the coils??
nycgps 06-01-2010, 05:59 PM Autozone/AdvanceAuto always check the return item to see if its really inside the box, other than that, they not gonna bother(not like they know how), and yep, the only thing that they "might" check is the Battery.
At Pepboys, they dont even check the battery I return to, I just told them "its dead" and gave them the receipt, and they just got me another one. no questions asked.

Targatheory 06-02-2010, 01:51 AM No, I posted an updated opinion on another thread, http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=198434
Just shop around at some local autoparts stores. If you have the cash to buy Mazda OEM coils, seriously I'd recommend researching brand vs warranty on said local stores.
If you have the trust in "stock replacement" parts from a retail store, and the knowledge regarding original Mazda ignition coils (and all the different revisions of those damned factory part numbers), AND if survival is more important than dominance at the moment, then the answer should be clear.
If not...
Dude just get some coils to hold you over and save up for what you really want, BHR ignition.
MazdaRX-8SPEED 06-02-2010, 11:52 AM well im not going to throw $400+ on a part that may not be the problem with my car. i think ill go with autozone parts and if it is the wires and coils then like you said... ill save up for BHR!! =D
Charles R. Hill 06-02-2010, 11:59 AM The idea is that our ignition system provides benefits to driveability and performance over and above even brand new OEM coils, and they will last far longer as well.
Targatheory 06-03-2010, 05:13 AM And that is why we should all buy BWD coils from Kragen Oreilly stores until we can afford a legit upgrade. Ya, shameless plug right there.

Not shameless at all. I am a vendor and promotion is a necessary part of the job. Creating "legit upgrades" is another part of the job. Yet another is helping people solve whatever problems ail them with their RX-8s.

IF you are going to spend $400+, get the BHR ignition upgrade. It will last the life of the car, and is the best ignition you can get.
If you are spending $400+ on stock coils, you are getting raped, and I hope they include a complimentary tube of KY jelly.
Mazmart (vendor here, Mazmart.com) sells all 4 coils for $140 total. And it takes less than 20 minutes to swap them.
