View Full Version : Questions about the 04 AT Governor
boarderjosh10 10-09-2009, 01:49 AM I have an automatic 4 speed 2004. I want to take it on the track, just to try it out and see what the car can really do. I heard (and searched) and found that the auto has a 125mph governor on it (the MT doesnt?). Well, I WANTED an AT, so please don't tell me to sell my car just to buy the MT version.
The car is currently stock, aside from a KN filter, but I plan on saving $$ this whole winter to add a lot more power in the future (exhaust, Suspension, FI, etc...). But the problem is that I don't want to invest all the money if the car will not go faster than 125mph due to electronic governor restrictions.
Is there a way to eliminate the governor? Can I use an AP to do it? Is there another way to remove it? If I add a turbo or other big upgrades, will that overrule the governor automatically(doubtful)?
YES! I searched the forum, I did find a post of someone with an automatic who hit the 125 limit and then there were 2 pages of hating on him for the danger (it was on street).
Anyways, these are basic questions hopefully, I am not going to be stupid in terms of the way I drive my car on or off the track, it just seems this car is capable of a lot more than my current stock AT is.
Thanks.
Jedi54 10-09-2009, 02:18 AM as far as I know, there's no way to remove the restriction. Phil's8 has a Supercharged AT that was being tuned by Mazdamaniac two weekends ago and MM commented on the damn limiter. If it were possible to remove via the AP, I'm sure he'd have done so. :dunno:
shazy 10-09-2009, 03:25 AM Wow you searched! That's incredible!
Sorry I really have no idea. If it can't really be done with the AP, could it be done with the RB flash?
Yep.. 125 is all your going to get. I've tested this just the other day. 6port AT will redline in 4th at about 125 when shifting into 5th there is nothing at all. sucks
As stated above if there was a way around this it would have been found by now.
rodjonathan 10-09-2009, 08:34 AM yeah ive endlessly searched for a way to remove the limiter but to no success and i never drive my car that fast anyway so it doesnt bother me that much
RotaryP7 10-09-2009, 09:32 AM I think you can buy a chip on ebay to remove the limiter. ;)
^Haha Smart ass
RIWWP 10-09-2009, 09:43 AM Best story I found so far, was someone who said:
"When you get to 125 and hit the limiter, pump the clutch a bit and ride it, the MPH will start climbing again!"
:uhh:
boarderjosh10 10-09-2009, 09:54 AM well that sucks a little bit. At least the car still looks cool cruisin at 123mph :-)
Haha What??????? :uh: maybe down a hill with a 10% grade
Come on people.....
adamwzl 10-09-2009, 10:56 AM Thats sucks, sorry dont know of a way to remove the limiter. Maybe the 09's dont have one... hmm does anybody know?
rodjonathan 10-09-2009, 11:06 AM the limiter is more of a gearbox reason than the engine especially on the 6 ports and if i remember correctly the auto stayed the same so the 09s probably have it too
adamwzl 10-09-2009, 11:10 AM Thats a shame... Another reason not to buy an auto =P haha jk..
Gr8Bullet 10-09-2009, 11:46 AM i got mine to go 126 mph once! lol then it went back down to 125.:ylsuper:
expo1 10-09-2009, 11:55 AM What kind of track were you thinking of driving on? Unless it has long straights & high banks I doubt you could hit 125 in an AT. I base that on what it took me to break 125 in a MT on big tracks like Pocono & Watkins Glenn. Braking points come faster than you think.
Gr8Bullet 10-09-2009, 12:06 PM long mile straight near me on the freeway. hit 125 and stayed for a good 20 seconds.
Gr8Bullet 10-09-2009, 12:18 PM had it on a vid but my comp crashed and i lost it.

I only have a limiter in 3rd gear (and maybe lower gears) and not 4 gear. It is my understanding that very early 04s did not have it but other 4 ports did.......The AP can not remove it or MM would have done so for my 3rd gear limiter.
There is someone in Japan that says he can remove it but I know of no one here. Sorry I would be pissed to if all I could do is 125mph.
I have posted several times that I can reach 153 mph but become airborne at that point.
Gr8Bullet 10-09-2009, 01:19 PM i can only go 125.:crying:
Gr8Bullet 10-09-2009, 01:21 PM bolts some wings on your car phil!:lol2:
jk
Darkpoison187 10-09-2009, 01:25 PM I hit 128/29(for a second) you bounce all over the place so control sux ass. i was on an empty bridge and it took like 5miles to hit that.....
ps I know it was stupid to do but It was the first day I got the car and I had to see what it could do bring on the flames if you must
Darkpoison187 10-09-2009, 01:29 PM Now Hks makes this thing but I've never heard of anyone with it then again I've never done my homework on it either......http://cgi.ebay.com/HKS-Speed-Limit-Defencer-SLD-for-RX8-Z33_W0QQitemZ290270911863QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Car sParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item43957e9d77
I've hit 115mph pretty easy while stock and the numbers did not seem like they wanted to slow down much while climbing.
Gr8Bullet 10-09-2009, 02:15 PM i can easily hit 125 on this freeway at like 2am no cars
the 2 freeway in glendale, ca
RIWWP 10-09-2009, 02:21 PM I am not trying to be combative or offensive, but is it really that hard hitting 125 with an AT? My 0-120 is ~23-25 seconds (stock, unless you count the +50hp from my clear corners), from 70-80, far quicker. Quick enough that I can easily hit 120 (top of 4th) between packs of cars on the highway without much thought or effort. Is it really 3-5 minutes of work?
I guess I never really thought of what the limit of revs really does to top end.
JinDesu 10-09-2009, 02:30 PM I'll chime in that it's not difficult for me to reach 110 on various highways. I tend to hover at that point, but I notice that I could push to 120 from 110 pretty easily.
Gr8Bullet 10-09-2009, 02:34 PM its cool ive done it a few times even with 3 ppl in my car. i top out at 125 with a 1/4 of a tank og gas at about 5500-5700rpm in 5th with my 6 speed a/t. my comp crashed so i lost the vid with my friends in the car recording. my friend can hit 180 the same road in his turbo'd m3.
exsequor 10-09-2009, 02:53 PM Nah I'd say my auto reached 125 in 35-45 seconds.
Chronisseur 10-09-2009, 03:54 PM I don't think I've gone past 100 MPH in my 8 (6 speed), but acceleration will definitely start to drop off at those kinds of speeds due to aerodynamic drag. It doesn't help that I usually drive with the windows open while cruising around.
Maybe someday I'll take a long road trip where I can really let loose, but until then, I'm content with double digit speeds.

Well yeah, anything above 75 isn't very enjoyable with the windows down :rollingla

HPDE's make you drive with the windows down, with a helmet on 125 isn't too bad :)

A helmet might be key. I had my windows down one time while driving around 70. My eyes watered so much from the wind, I couldn't really see.

Need shades for times like that.

JinDesu 10-09-2009, 04:24 PM I wear glasses (don't want to buy contacts), and my glasses are tiny :(
shazy 10-09-2009, 05:27 PM cool!
rodjonathan 10-09-2009, 06:22 PM has anyone tried the hks thing from ebay?
boarderjosh10 10-09-2009, 11:17 PM I looked at the HKS thing on their website but I don't have the cash to experiment on something that doesn't seem to have gotten much regard. I think that if it actually can remove limiters safely than it would be VERY VERY popular.

OP's track = Interstate 94
He's not worried about the top speed "tracking", trust me.

I don't know about the 4 port but the 6 port gets to 125 pretty easy. There's more acceleration if the gearbox would allow it. 5th gear is just like cruise control at WOT
quazmosis 10-12-2009, 03:04 PM Fastest I've gone in mine is around 105. It wasn't the car that prevented it. It was me. I just plain got scared and slowed down.
