View Full Version : High mileage in CA, NV, or AZ
RX8HD 09-25-2009, 02:45 PM Does anyone living in Southern Cali, NV, or AZ have an RX8 with high mileage (75,000 or more) on the original engine? If so, what kind of gas? oil? premix? My RX8 in Cali just failed the compression test with Mazda Corporate on the line, and the dealership says there's nothing that can be done to prevent it in hot climates.
philipchan 09-25-2009, 02:56 PM 82K on my 8......SoCal
but second engine already
scremn8 09-25-2009, 03:24 PM go with bhr coils that will help.
but if it really is low then they have
to replace your engine. mazda
extended the warranty to 100 000
miles.. most heat related issue's
generally point to the coils
nikkdizzle 09-25-2009, 04:17 PM that shouldn't be a problem....the engine is covered by the 100k warranty...but as stated above, anything heat related is probably coils...
timja 09-25-2009, 05:12 PM I have a 2004 Auto with 95,500 miles. It's on the original engine too. No problems so far, I just use premium gas and maintain the oil with GTX high mileage 5w30.
RX8HD 09-25-2009, 07:04 PM Timja, that's impressive. Are you loyal to a particular brand of premium gas? Have you always used 5w30?
timja 09-25-2009, 08:22 PM I usually use Shell or Mobile but I don't think its too big of a deal. I bought the car when it had 60k on it and started using 5w30 from then on.
The only issue I have had is when I modded my car with an AEM intake and HKS Hi-Power exhaust. I would frequently stall on hot days and throw up a code: P2070 (SSV stuck open) Since then I've just gone back to stock and its been great!
maxprelude92 09-25-2009, 10:50 PM I bought my '04 w/ 36,000 miles on it. Now it has 85,500. I use Shell V-power almost exclusively, as well as Idemitsu premix. I generally use 5W-20 conventional oil with the occasional quart of 5W-30.

144600 miles on original engine, Cheveron Premium, RP 10W-40, I don't primix, routine maintenance (oil/filter change, sparkplug change, diff/tranny oil change, etc.)

RX8HD 09-28-2009, 11:22 PM Well done sir. That's an inspiration. I had used almost entirely Mobil regular 87 gas so I wonder if that was a factor to my engine failure. The good news is the new engine was totally free with no hassles from the dealership.

iLikeEatPoo 09-29-2009, 10:27 AM 2004 82k Miles and over 300 track miles on original motor. running 5w30 castrol gtx and 5 caps of premix every fill up with the OMP still installed.

Someone recently told me that running premium is extremely important in rotary engines due to the fact that the higher octane gas keeps the combustion chamber temps much lower. Anyone know if that's true?
c0ldf1ame 10-05-2009, 10:56 PM closing in on 70k this month, so far so good, but think my coils and plugs are due for a change soon, using mostly shell and cheveron 91 and 10w-30 regular oil, no premix
scremn8 10-06-2009, 06:51 AM if you have the money. up grade you coils.

I am @ 107k. Brought the car with 104.5 k. Had brakes, diff., tranny fluid, oil change done since having the car. Use Idemitsu 4 oz premix, and shell v-power 91.

jordanjerome 04-26-2010, 09:48 AM 112k and 3 engines in the process. god I cant wait to sell this BEA-Utiful car.
seagram14 05-04-2010, 05:54 PM I have 2005 6MT with 87,500 miles on the original engine. Used only shell or cheveron 87octane gas(I do not use any other brand of gas). My car is use to 87 octane because that is what I have been using. If you always used 91 octane then stick the 91 octane because your car is use to it. I heard some where is ok to increase the octane gas level that your engine is use to but it is not good to decrease the gas octane level the you engine is use to. I change the oil every 3000 miles with castrol 5-20. No premix what is that anyway? Change the plugs at around 55,000 miles. I have an AEM cai system and get around 16 to 17 miles in the city and 19 to 20 on the highway. Mileage might be better if I did not have the AEM cai system and was not running in 19x9.5 wheels with 255/19/35 tires on front and back.
