Gumbert apollo sets new 'ring record 7:11, still holds old record ugliest car ever

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/18/g...record-at-nur/

Porsche GT2? Get lost. Godzilla? Scram. Corvette ZR1? Take a hike. Dodge Viper ACR? Nothing but a big sissy. There's a new sheriff in Nordschleifeland and its name is Apollo, Gumpert Apollo. Actually, the proper name is Gumpert Apollo Sport, and on August 13, one piloted by a 26-year-old named Florian Gruber ran around the Nurburgring in 7:11:57, shattering all the other production car "records" by eleven seconds or more. Dang, right?

What makes the Apollo sport so fraggin' fast you ask? How does a 700-hp, twin-turbo'd Audi 4.2-liter FSI V8 strike you? Makes a bit more sense suddenly that little David here was able to chop down all those Goliaths, right? Anyhow, hats off to Mr. Gruber, Mr. Gumpert and the rest of the crew. Here's hoping that one day some sort of governing body sanctions 'Ring times. And we won't say a word to Radical and their "record."

I don't see what you are saying. Those are 2 beautiful cars and there is no way that ugly POS bears a resemblance to them.

i like how it looks, it just needs a few tweaks here and there.. but to each their own. Plus this little 'ugly duckling' misfit would destroy all the pretty boy super cars

I'd only be concerned with how it looks from the rear. That's all people will see of that car anyway!

I think super (well hyper) cars have to follow a fine line between being extremely fast and still be a work of art. You can make anything fast nowadays, but to do so and still design something beautiful is why lambo, ferrari, zonda, etc sell cars.

Cant agree more. It deserves the 5 X 3 matrix of puke faces.

I dont particularly care for the shape of the Caparo T1, but it's form following function to the extreme, and that makes it beautiful. The Gumpert misses the mark, and gets caught in limbo. It's not anywhere as beatiful as a Lamborghini or Ferrari, and is going to be destroyed by the Caparo's Nurburgring time.

even if you want to claim form over function it's been proven by ferrari/lambo etc that you can have an incredibly aero car why remaining appealing to the eyes. This car though doesn't 'deserve' the 'ring title in my opinion. I'd rather have one of the slower cars, though anything doing 7:30 range on the ring is a death wish.

...I kinda like it....it would look better in black though. As for the Caparo...damn, that's basically a 2 seater F1 car. Haven't seen much about it for over a year now though...is there a new one coming out??

The caparo is kind of in design limbo, its just too much for the road so they've been trying to re-engineer it to make it more streetable ever since the Jason Plato incident

But you get what I'm saying... To the extreme, EVERYTHING on the Caparo is about function, so even if certain things are redesigned, it will continue to follow function. The way I see it, the Gumpert is stuck in an ugly place between style and performance, and it sure it can perform well, but they also "tried" to make it look good, and failed miserably. Once you tip the scales to get that level of performance, dont screw it up with tacked on the stylistic elements that give a "**** box" kind of look.

If you read about design of the Veyron, you'll see that it's a completely opposite approach from the Caparo's. Bugatti penned the design of the Veyron first, and then forced the engineers to make it work to reach the 250 mph and 1000+ hp goals. That thing has flaps, ducts, and radiators all over the damn place because engineers had to retrofit them into the original design. I can't appreciate that approach either, but they did get the job done, so the engineers deserve a pat on the back.

yeah but the Veyron is only good at achieving a top speed, it doesnt handle nearly as well as other supercars and I feel that it's as short sighted as the SSC Ultimate Aero. I have to say though that both of those cars are only designed to go fast in a straight line and I think that those two cars are just idiotic because it takes alot less engineering to make a car that can only go fast straight yet they get all this exposure as OMG VEYRON IS DA **** ..... not. People dont appreciate cars like the Koenigsegg that actually are an amazing engineering feat all around

You gotta be kidding me. The Veyron can't handle? Horse ****. Where you getting that idea? Admittedly neither of us has driven one, but no one has said it handles poorly. It doesn't have race car handling, but it does better than most. It's the fastest Grand Tourer ever created, and to "poo poo" the engineering marvel that you can do 252 mph and crack off a low 10 second quater mile in supreme comfort is being short sited.
