I am checking to make a trip from Sydney - Brisbane - Cairns.
from mid Feb to mid Mar for about 4-5 weeks ...

Any idea if there are any 8 to rent in that neigbourhood ?
Or any fun cars for that matter ?
Website / contacts.

I was previously down under in Oct-Nov 2002 for 6 weeks ...
I don't know why I took the ride back to Europe !
use to drive a Ford Falcon over there ... someone forgot to tell me that they didn't have ABS ...

Any other travel / driving advice are welcome !

Hi Baphi,

You definitely won't be able to rent an RX8. Some of the major car hire chains have cars like the Saab 9000 and Toyota MR2 which aren't too expensive to rent. Just look up Avis or Hertz or Budget on the internet and choose Australia.

There are other places that will let you rent Ferrarris and other exotics - but they usually require your yearly salary as a deposit beforehand. There is no real point, as the Syd-Brisbane-Cairns main highway routes are excessively speed policed.

When you get to Sydney, you could wander down William St towards Kings Cross and there are a decent selection of car hire places there (just don't do it at night, or you might pick up something else) that do entry level sports cars.

The only other advice at the moment would be that Sydney to Cairns is a long way to drive ...

We are driving Brisbane to Sydney in mid May, so thanks for the speed warning.

As there is only 3 of us rather than 4 as we had on the Melbourne to Syndney round trip, we wont be hiring some old van (people carrier) this time, but I probably wont be able to convince the lads to go for anything remotely sporty with our budget.

I am looking forward to being overtaken by a few aussie RX8's though, so dont let me down!

Cheers

Y'all make sure you let us know when you are in town (Brisbane for me) so we can extend some local hospitality!

There is a place in brisbane where you can hire sporty sorts of cars. I think it is "Classic Convertables"?? Have a look at http://www.chauffeursdirectory.com/brisbane_car_hire.html

Cheers,
Hymee.

Speed is not a problem for interstate and foreign drivers... they can never find you ;).... who cares about dermit point interstate. :)

To hire a car in Melbourne. Try Europcar a month early ... can hire a Porsche Boxster. Otherwise try greatcar hire @ cnr of Swan St. nd Punt Rd. You can find them from yellowpages.com.au.

Also try rentnewcars.com.au if want decent quality cheap hire... they are agencies for big company... I hired a BMW Z3 for my wedding for $250 for 2 days. :D

Just a note of warning: I was working with a couple of French guys here for a while, one of whom was stopped after registering 150kmh on a highway patrol radar. When they found he was a foreign visitor, they escorted him to the local poloce station where they tried to have him pay the fine on the spot. Of course, he could speak no english ;) so they gave up. Am not sure they would do so with a couple of poms :(

On a completely unrelated note, I am in Moloolaba for the next week or two doing some work.

No RX8 though, I had to drive from Bris airport up here in a bloody automatic Lancer. The brakes are practically non existance, the automatic is brain dead and gutless, the thing feels like it is about to tip around corners.
