The MAF sensor is also called a MAP sensor, it's called a MAP sensor on older cars. :)

the smiley makes me think you are kidding and likely know this, but i should point it out anyways. MAF sensors differ from MAP sensors quite a bit. MAF (aka Mass Air Flow sensor, sometimes called a MAS). MAP would stand for Manifold Absolute Pressure. I wont get into how they differ, but what the OP is likely talking about is the MAF sensor that is screwed into the intake just after the air filter box. that is all.

cool. now that that is sorted out, i have a question for you. Do you mean the wires down inside the MAF were black? I've had many an rx8 come through the dealership with various running issues (of course it is almost always plugs/coils) but i usually do a check of the MAF among other things first and I've never actually seen one that actually looks dirty like you said yours was. What intake do you have on your car?

Yes ... this map sensor is old technology and it does help save on gas!! I believe the correct term for this sensor now is a GPS! Haha! And it keeps you from getting lost, thus saving gas! :eyetwitch

Take a good quality pic of that black MAF and post it here. Then clean it very, very carefully!
