panda 07-31-2003, 03:41 AM ok, im going to get tint in two weeks, i made my appt today....i have to decide wether i go for 5(which is limo, and i know it may be illegal, but it looks very nice on some cars), or is i should go for like 15-20, which is still dark but you can see in the car when your driving down the street, im temped to not opt for limo on the red just for the fact of the contrast between the brightness of the red and the darkness of the black...
what do yall think!?

MrWigggles 07-31-2003, 04:18 AM Hi Panda,
In Houston the legal limit is 35% FILM on the sides and you can do anything you want on the back.
In practice you can get away with 20% on the sides, but not 5%. The cops will bust you for 5%. If you have 20%, the cops probably won't cite you if your tint installer has their sticker in the film like they are supposed to do.
5% will also seriously hinder your ability to see things at night. Even with 20% on my current car, I have to role down my windows at night to see what I am doing.
Now, I mentioned "FILM" earlier because in Texas the percent only applies to the film itself. If the windows are already tinted a little from factory (which I think they are), then 35% or 20% will actually be darker than that.
Bottom line: don't go 5%.

mikeb 07-31-2003, 03:15 PM i have the red rx8 and it has limo on back and 4th door windows then is has medium on the driver and passenger windows. The dark tint looks great on the velocity red 8. I would go dark tint

Andrew,
Just got mine done today. What I picked is plenty dark for me, and is still stylish. You may want to look into something "legal", IMO.
Manufacturer: SUN-GARD (http://www.ftitechnical.com/index.cfm/Sungard_Automotive-15.htm)
Desert Smoke
30% sides / 20% rear
Lifetime Warranty
$150 which includes tax.
Prowla 08-02-2003, 10:20 AM Zoomster, your car looks amazing with the tinted windows. It looks great as is, but I believe the tints round the car out to total perfection.
Elara 08-02-2003, 11:38 AM Panda,
If I were you, I'd definitely go with something that was legal. I don't how it is in Texas, but in Virginia, if they pull you over and your tint is too dark, they make you scrape it all off right then. The humilation of being pulled over and being forced to scrape off $300-400 worth of tint on the side of the road with everyone who drives by laughing ought to be enough deterrant- I know it is for me.
brothervoodoo 08-06-2003, 03:16 PM Anyone have experience with this product:
http://www.madico.com/Automotive.htm
How does it compare to Llumar, 3M and Huber Optik?
I don't need the very best out there, just need to know if it's pretty good and won't fade after a couple years.
PUR NRG 08-06-2003, 03:22 PM Like all tints it depends on what material it's made of. Dyes will turn purple and blister after several years. Metallic doesn't have either of those problems but blocks radar detectors. For what it's worth I have Madico metallic on my BMW for three years and it looks the same as when it was first installed.

Magar,
Thanks for the compliment.
Here is a link to AutoWindowTinting.com (http://autowindowtintings.com). Go to Product Info, and choose the tint product you want, i.e. Sun-Gard, SolarGard, Huper, etc. There you can research their product. It will give you specs, etc. Most of the companies have URL's to their home site, where you can "locate a dealer/installer" in your area. Also you can check your yellow pages and find a local tinting shop that carries & installs one of the tints you are are interested in.
Good luck.
Magar 08-18-2003, 11:52 AM Thanks for the good info! I'm hoping someone in Eugene has experience with any of the companies listed. I want to avoid that bubble look!
8thSin 08-18-2003, 07:53 PM Has anybody tinted their Winning blue 8?? I'm in Florida, and previous vehicles have had 12% (on my SC 01' black Frontier) or Limo (97 sand color 626) tint on them. With the blue, I'm not so sure how it would look.. Could take it into Photoshop if I wanted, but ehh rather see the real thing if possible. So post away! BTW, anybody in or around ORLANDO FL?? Here's one pic of my love. I mean my 8..
8thSin 08-18-2003, 07:56 PM ..
I'm not in orlando but I fly/drive there often. :D
She's perty.
RodsterinFL 08-19-2003, 11:05 PM Here's mine 30%
8thSin 08-20-2003, 10:23 AM Looks a lot better than I expected
I'm having tints installed this Saturday at Ziebart for $229 the rear half (it's illegal in Illinois to have the full car tinted)...they quoated me $269 for the entire car which is a bargain considering how much bigger the windshield and two side windows are for only $40 more but i had to refuse it as i already don't have my front plates on and i don't have amber lights in my corner lights...
is this a good deal? how much did you guys spend on yours or what are some quotes you've gotten? Ziebart has a lifetime warranty against bubbling, cracking, or fading...
also, what shade of tint did you get/are you gonna get?
brothervoodoo 08-20-2003, 02:19 PM I had five windows done for $200. The tint is manufactured by "Madico".

the shop i go to here (STL) did my avenger for $185 (2 front 35%, 3 rear 5%) and they would've done a black vinyl strip across the top of the front windshield for $20 more but i procrastinated on that.
on another note...
lights that flash (namely turn signals and side markers) must be either amber or white in front and amber, white or red in the rear (in IL and MO). any other colors and you're illegal. FYI.
Genom 08-22-2003, 03:38 PM I'm getting it done at a local shop a friend recomended thats doing the whole thing for 125 with lifetime warranty (place has been around for 15 years and I only hear good things about them).
damn i wish i shopped around...i'm taking my car in tomorrow morning at 8am and i want to get it done asap...oh well, i guess i'll take it out of that $500 debit :D
desmo996 09-02-2003, 02:00 PM I live in Orlando, UCF area. I bought my car a month ago and I have not seen another RX8 on the road. By the way, you guys have to try Zaino. That stuff makes the car lokk great.
Any suggestions for a window tint on a Titanium Grey RX8?
ex;(Panther Black 3M, Premire metalic)
If anyone who owns a Titanium which tint did you go with?
spdspappy 09-14-2003, 11:10 AM I'm trying to figure out the same thing for my winning blue... Did you just get it? You should chime in on the San Antonio thread (http://www.rx8forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8982) Where are you going to get your tint done @?

Madico tint film:
20% rear / 35% port windows / 55% front windows

What I have not seen and contemplated to do (probably should have), would have been to get some reflective or 'mirror tint'. Not to the point of a true mirror but "some" reflection. That would be a great combination on the titanium.
mikeb 09-14-2003, 04:52 PM here in ca the mirror tint is illegal but I like it
Genom 09-14-2003, 08:56 PM I got my tints done at http://www.brianswindowtinting.com/ They use Lumar tints. I got the premium metallic with 38% front, 28% rear. I could have gone 28 front also since it's not dark enough to annoy cops, but why have the possible hassle? Whatever you do, DONT get cheap tints. Especially the rear window glass with the defroster and built in antenna, if they bork that up, it's going to hurt.
RXhusker 09-14-2003, 10:34 PM I am getting Huper-Optik Ceramic 30 (34% tint) done on my titanium next week :D
Dugless 09-27-2003, 08:41 PM Has anyone tinted their rear window?
What kind of tint did you use, will metallic tints interfere with the radio reception?
Genom 09-27-2003, 11:08 PM I've got a titanium particle tint and have had no problems with the antenna.
B-Nez 09-28-2003, 01:14 AM There is a previous thread that addresses this, but to summarize:
Your metallic tint is on the inside, and the antenna is on the outside (i.e. the tint is not between the antenna and the airwaves). So - no it is not a metal shield blocking the antenna. What you MAY experience is while passing under high-voltage power lines, the metal MAY amplify the interference. Not word for word, but you get the basic idea. If you want the exact explanation, use the search button.
Oh yeah, and welcome to the forum. :D I tinted mine charcoal (has a metallic base (not reflective)), and my crappy Northwest Florida radio stations sound just fine.
Dugless 09-28-2003, 06:40 PM Thanks!! This forum is what got me to my nearest Mazda dealership where I bought my 8 on the test drive.
I appreciate everyones help and great advice:)
8_wannabe 09-28-2003, 08:31 PM correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the antenna in the windshield? Top center? I thought the wire in the rear window is just the defroster.
Dugless 09-28-2003, 08:43 PM hmmmmmm.....
aziza K 09-28-2003, 10:08 PM ok so heres a question: I am going to get mine tinted tuesday and i need a color.... I love the "lexus" tint( the one on the suv's)... ok would that color look good on my red rx-8? or should I go with black?
mikeb 09-29-2003, 01:01 AM Im telling you when you go to the tint shop have them so your pics from previous customers or they should be able to hold samples of tint to your window
aziza K 09-29-2003, 05:19 PM I know but I wanted a guys opinion
mikeb 09-30-2003, 02:45 PM those are my thoughts
sometimes things look different in person
CriticalMass 12-30-2003, 11:46 PM Whats up everyone, this is my first post, ive been reading the forum for about a month. I should be picking mine up from SESI motors (YPSI Michigan) around the 14th. Got the car cover for XMAS....Now im looking for Color tints. Silver Mirror would be preferred. Anyone know where I could find this? Ive been doing yahoo/google searches, cant find anything good. Most of the car sites are amateur like.
Color tints?
Mirror?
Thanks guys, and btw. Nice rides everyone. I think im going to have to add one 10 or 12 inch sub for the sound, I hear the bose system is LESS than stellar. Thanks guys
Critical Mass
Silver - Fully loaded, MT 6, GT, NAV, AP, RAP, Xenon, etc. 18" Mich. Snow Treads.
USCEric 12-31-2003, 04:37 AM I didn't know they had silver tint until recently. Too late now.
B-Nez 01-01-2004, 08:35 PM I'll tell you why I don't like the mirrored tint for the RX-8. The biggest reason is the glass seals - especially the rear sides. The black rubber "rings" stand out somewhat with no tint. With a smoke tint (which I have), the glass and seals do not contrast as much, and make a cleaner look (tint it darker, and it'll all look black). Now, someone did post a photo with mirrored tint, and the black seals were VERY overt. I did not like it for that reason.
x-mobile 01-12-2004, 03:52 AM Anyone know what the % tint allowed in CA? BTW- all your tints in the pictures look really nice!! ;)
mikeb 01-12-2004, 05:45 PM I'm pretty sure that in CA you can't have any tint on the passenger or driver window.
If you get tint on those windows go very light if you dont want tickets
Outlaws eXtreme 01-12-2004, 06:29 PM Mikeb said it correctly, very light. The cops will write you up for Fix it ticket immediately for dark tints on the driver/passenger side. Also there was a post of how low the front window can be tinted.
Iamvain1 01-13-2004, 12:01 AM Hello all. I haven't seen anyone mention getting tinting done at a dealership. Is this an option, and if so, do you recommend having this done at one.
x-mobile 01-13-2004, 02:49 AM I guess I can't tint my car. :(
Genom 01-13-2004, 10:09 AM Dealers usually do offer tints for a markup. Usually best to find a high quality shop and take it there.
x-mobile: Why not?
Megatron_98 01-27-2004, 11:50 AM Anyone in the Charlotte, NC area I highly recomend Lightning Mikes they do a great job around here. Good looking tint on everyones 8's.
