View Full Version : Weird blue crap on battery terminal! maverick02 06-20-2009, 03:44 PM What is this? :( http://stashbox.org/547347/IMG_4230.JPG dannobre 06-20-2009, 03:46 PM Corrosion :) Clean it off...and neutralize with some baking soda in water..then smear Vaseline or grease on the terminal maverick02 06-20-2009, 03:50 PM Corrosion :) Clean it off...and neutralize with some baking soda in water..then smear Vaseline or grease on the terminal Yeah.. i figured it was some kind of corrosion, but is the battery leaking, ya think? dannobre 06-20-2009, 03:56 PM It's a non sealed battery......so it vents when it charges..... A sealed battery won't be as bad...cause they vent less You might want to check the level of the electrolyte in the battery as well....often it is low if there is that much corrosion maverick02 06-20-2009, 04:02 PM how does one check the electrolyte level? dannobre 06-20-2009, 04:12 PM open up the caps that are on the top...clean it up first though. Liquid should be above the level of the lead sheets that you will see when you look in If not..add DISTILLED water till it covers them.....carefully so that you don't splash acid on yourself How old is the battery...if it's more than 3-4 years old..it would be a good time for a new one maverick02 06-20-2009, 04:15 PM it's only a year old or so.. not old at all. I was reading another post about this here: http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=113475&page=2 The guy said he hosed off the terminals after applying the baking soda/water combo.. Can you really hose off the battery like that without shorting it and getting water all over inside the engine compartment? dannobre 06-20-2009, 04:17 PM A careful hosing will be OK. Don't spray it on the alternator of the fuse panel and you should be OK You want to make sure you rinse it well to get rid of it..you don't want it to just wash below the battery box and corrode the subframe maverick02 06-20-2009, 04:21 PM ok.. thanks dannobre! dannobre 06-20-2009, 04:24 PM Hopefully you don't need a new terminal....post up a picture after you have it all cleaned up Goop the vaseline on it really well and it shouldn't do it like that again :) PSTNLSS 06-20-2009, 04:27 PM looks like pop rocks yumm Nubo 06-20-2009, 04:46 PM Yeah.. i figured it was some kind of corrosion, but is the battery leaking, ya think? It could be leaking from around the terminal post. Once you get it cleaned up you should check it regularly for awhile to see. How old is your battery? At replacement time, consider an AGM battery. They tend to be more expensive but you will never have to deal with corrosion or maintenance. ZoomZoomH 06-20-2009, 04:52 PM if it's one year old bring it back to where you bought it and exchange it for a new one under warranty. ZoomZoomH 06-20-2009, 04:53 PM oh and your positive terminal is fubar'd, time to get a new one. maverick02 06-20-2009, 08:03 PM CRAP!!! Well, i clean it off and i could see that the positive terminal was eaten pretty good.. As i was removing it, trying to be really delicate not to bend it.. i bended it and poof.. it snapped off :( :( :( 04RX8man 06-20-2009, 08:17 PM on the battery snapped?? orthe cable? maverick02 06-20-2009, 08:21 PM on the battery snapped?? orthe cable? No, the terminal.. not the post.. the terminal snapped off.. it was completely eaten maverick02 06-20-2009, 08:27 PM http://shup.com/Shup/174726/IMG_4233.JPG ZoomZoomH 06-20-2009, 08:33 PM lol, looks exactly like what happened to mine: http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=119051 time to go buy that positive terminal! maverick02 06-20-2009, 08:36 PM lol, looks exactly like what happened to mine: http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=119051 time to go buy that positive terminal! Does autozone carry one? Where do you put the new terminal? at the bolt? ZoomZoomH 06-20-2009, 08:38 PM you'll need to buy it at a mazda dealer... maverick02 06-21-2009, 01:39 AM zoomzoom, did the new terminal that appears to be zinc plated... has that corroded since you installed it? ZumnRx8 06-21-2009, 02:17 AM (With Only Allen Wrenches :yesnod: better than the bending stock terminals) Heres a Rocksford Fosgate Battery Terminal I used for the Positive Terminal Replacement When I was replacing my Subwoofer Wiring. It has two slots, One for your Existing Power Wire, and One for the 4 gauge Power Wire for your amp. I bought it at Best buy for about $17.99. I plan on replacing the Negative Terminal Also. The terminal comes with a plastic smoked cover, but I need to trim some of it to fit properly as you can tell... http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp53/rx8zumn/Sound%20System/SDC12366.jpg http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp53/rx8zumn/Sound%20System/SDC12367.jpg maverick02 06-21-2009, 02:33 AM zumn, is this the thing you have? : http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/products/product_details.asp?cat_id=5&series_id=39&family_id=74&item_id=108322&locale=en_US&p_status= It looks like you removed the fuse completely and just bolted the factory wire harness to the RF terminal? ZumnRx8 06-21-2009, 02:57 AM Yes thats it, and I didnt remove the fuse, I only did it for the "+" Power Terminal. The Negative Terminal is the one that has a fuse. Or do you mean the "In-Line" fuse for the 4 gauge wire to the amp? In that case, no, I temporarily removed the 4 gauge wire because I was installing my Double din....heres the link.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaqkQQugfw4 edit: Im still trying to figure out How I can possibly do the Negative terminal that has the fuse on it..... maverick02 06-21-2009, 03:03 AM No, there's a 60A Fuse that the positive wire harness connects into. http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=102145&d=1181792801 ZumnRx8 06-21-2009, 03:06 AM Look at your pics and look at my pics....I replaced the one opposite of the one you are replacing.... edit: from your picture I already know how Im going to replace this terminal :yesnod: I will post pics tomorrow if I have time Ill do it Tomorrow... maverick02 06-21-2009, 03:12 AM oh, so you just replaced the negative terminal.. ok.. well so you know.. the factory wire harness is crimped to an o-ring and comes in from the bottom of the left side of the fuse and bolts into the positive terminal -- that should be no problem to bypass -- but there's also another wire that is much thinner with a special connector that snaps into that fuse thing.. i'm not really sure where that wire goes to.. perhaps to ground to allow the fuse to burn out properly if needed? ZumnRx8 06-21-2009, 03:31 AM Lemme do a quick demo of what Im going to do....and what I did with the positive terminal...Be back in 5 min or so... hold on.. ZumnRx8 06-21-2009, 04:00 AM What do you think?... http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp53/rx8zumn/Sound%20System/TF.jpg maverick02 06-21-2009, 04:10 AM I'm not sure I completely followed the diagram..but it's pretty late here so my brain isnt working :P Take some pics when you do it :D syntheticdarkness 06-21-2009, 09:51 AM http://www.rx8club.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=140319&d=1244767961 http://www.rx8club.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=140320&d=1244767961 http://www.rx8club.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=140321&d=1244767961 Your postive terminal has a small fracture in the post, mine was the same, but then I just relocated the new battery in the trunk. The positive terminal block has two wires connected to it then the fuse for the eps is connected to the block for their type of inline fuse. Gotta make sure that the corrosion didn't spread to bad down inside the wire also. ZoomZoomH 06-21-2009, 02:18 PM zoomzoom, did the new terminal that appears to be zinc plated... has that corroded since you installed it? nope, hasn't happened since then, remember it only corrodes if the battery is leaking acid out of the terminal (which yours did). i do check the battery terminals every time i do an oil change now, so lessons learned for me is to keep an eye on them battery terminals regularly! maverick02 06-21-2009, 03:29 PM nope, hasn't happened since then, remember it only corrodes if the battery is leaking acid out of the terminal (which yours did). i do check the battery terminals every time i do an oil change now, so lessons learned for me is to keep an eye on them battery terminals regularly! Well.. it's my understanding that these batteries are not sealed. they vent vapors and it's those vapors that come into contact with the copper terminal and corrode. I'm guessing the reason the new ones are zinc plated is because it has less chance of corroding...at least I hope so! cajunrx8 06-21-2009, 04:53 PM You also need to clean and repair or replace the battery hold down. Once it starts corroding, never seems to stop. TheGreatLouisianaRoadkill 06-21-2009, 11:41 PM you'll need to buy it at a mazda dealer... and the reason for that is.... |
