Kind of hard to describe in text, but here's my issue in a nutshell.

The car, shifts perfect. I have a little grind into 4th, and I have to double clutch reverse, but the trans seems normal.

However.

When driving, whenever I let off the gas, the trans makes a loud whining/ howling noise.

Lately, when driving at very slow speeds (sub 10mph) with the clutch in, the trans sounds like its making a grinding noise. Although it's shifting and behaving normally?

My first instinct is that it's low on fluid, I had a leak over the winter that was just repaired and maybe the tech didnt top off the fluid :eyetwitch

However I have no jack to get it in the air and to be completely honest Im not sure how to check the manual trans fluid? However what if there is something more wrong with the trans?

My car has 76,XXX miles on it, this is the second trans which has roughly 46,XXX miles on it.

If there is anybody locally that could help me out I would appreciate it. Im unemployed and cant really afford a diagnostic at this time but I DEFINATELY CANT AFFORD A NEW TRANS!!

Please PM me or shoot me a text 847.366.7206, my name is Chris.

Thank you for reading and my apologies for the long post.

if you cant jack up the car its gonna be difficult

there are two 24mm bolts on the drivers side. top is fill hole bottom is drain hole.

Take the top one out on a level surface and fill till it comes out, either from that hole or through the shifter plate with the shifter out.

could be your throwout bearing, that would make a whining noise

SOMEONE PLEASE COME HELP ME OUT, something is seriously wrong here.

thanks for the advice. I found the plug and topped off the fluid. It was almost a quart low :scared:

Although the noise decreased, its still there and very noticable. It sounds almost like a supercharger when cruising at high speeds 30+ mph. It only makes the noise when letting OFF THE GAS, when on the throttle, it is quiet.

At low speeds (sub 10mph) it sounds like the gears are grinding when youre not on the gas.

Does this sound like a throw out bearing?

switch to a heavier trans fluid like Redline 75W-140NS, be sure to get the NS oil, they also make a plain 75W-140

you may also need to check that the PPF is aligned properly, it's location establishes the drive shaft alignment between the trans and differential
