View Full Version : BHR Mid-Pipe Sound Video
Flashwing 04-30-2009, 05:43 AM Ok, it's finally been put together.
Here's the link for the youtube video with our sound samples.

WAR CRUNK 04-30-2009, 07:22 AM dmn my computer is sloow
These threads crack me up. Has anyone taken any sort of SPL measurements yet? I mean I bought an exhaust because it sounded awesome on Youtube, but when I had it installed it practically made me deaf...
Edit: I'm specifically curious about the in-cabin volume levels.
jsjjr 04-30-2009, 08:16 AM Nice! You could really tell the difference in tone between the 2 mid-pipes on Flashwing's ride and the stocker. The stocker still 'sounded' stock, but it has a slightly deeper tone to it. The way Flashwing described the difference's with the pipe is spot on.. You could really tell his has been mellowed out...I also noticed that he had a significant drop in the pop pop popping noise. (Man, I'm sooo glad I don't have a stock exhaust anymore, they sound terrible!)
michaelsk8er 04-30-2009, 08:24 AM Sounds pretty good. Any idea on completion dates? I haven't kept up with the other thread.

Yes we did take some sound level measurements and Charles Hill has the results. He's more of an expert regarding sound and could probably better explain the results.
If you want something to compare it to, simply listen to my first #1 sample as that's the sound you DO NOT want. Otherwise, if you enjoy the sound of your cat-back then you'll like this pipe.
Charles R. Hill 04-30-2009, 10:30 AM Now, before any of you think we did an incomplete and piss-poor job of this I would like to point out a few things. This was just a preliminary test to see if we should spend any more time with this particular pursuit. We will also do spectral analysis, at some point before release of the midpipe and we will do backpressure-testing, as well (not that anybody will really understand the implications but we have a lot of data-whores around here who like to gaze at numbers :lol2:).
Here is what we measured with my professional sound-pressure level meter;
1) 6' distance at idle.
2) 25' distance at 4K rpms.
3) In-cabin at idle.
4) In-cabin at 4K rpms.
Espelir Cat-Back w/B+B midpipe. Espelir Cat-back w/BHR prototype.
1) 79 1) 75
2) 82 2) 77
3) 73 3) 67
4) 72 4) 73
Stock Cat-back/Stock Catpipe. Stock Cat-back/BHR prototype
1) 68 1) 68
2) 67 2) 67
3) 67 3) 69
4) 70 4) 72
Tanabe/Mazsport. Tanabe/BHR
1) 71 1) 73
2) 65 2) 68
3) 67 3) 67
4) 73 4) 71
Keep in mind that most people cannot even distinguish changes in the 1-2dB range and that THIS test does not account for frequency groupings that are dampened/accentuated between the various pipes. Until we do the spectral analysis, all I can tell you to do is ask those who owned the test cars for their descriptions of the before/after.
dondo 04-30-2009, 11:10 AM nice vid.

Thanks Charles, thats exactly what I was looking for. Numbers are looking pretty good from inside the cabin!
jsjjr 04-30-2009, 11:29 AM You could def tell a difference with Flashwing's car. The levels for the others sounded about the same for me except for the stock one. I guess it was really just the 'tone' that made it seem louder.
Razz1 04-30-2009, 11:39 AM I think there is something wrong with the video.
All I can hear is music.
It would be nice to get a sound level at 60, 65, and 70 mph on the freeway.
Even a Video with sound while driving may be helpful.
Edit: Tone sounds good
Atilla 04-30-2009, 11:44 AM Wow that's AWESOME! Great info on the sound readings Charles :bigok: That should help a lot of people that are concerned about sound.
Jedi54 04-30-2009, 12:20 PM so far so good guys. Nicely done
shaunv74 04-30-2009, 12:23 PM Thanks Ray for providing both the video and the data with baselines so we can get an understanding of the differences from a subjective and objective standpoint.
That's great stuff!
Easy_E1 04-30-2009, 12:27 PM :bootyshak :smiley309 :ban:
This is nice...
Might be time for me to ditch the gutted stock cat.
Mazmart 04-30-2009, 12:47 PM I kept seeing some bald guy walking around in the video; totally distracted me from the exhaust analysis.
Sounds good thus far. Good luck guys.
Paul.
G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 04-30-2009, 01:15 PM not too sure what Paul is complaining about ;)
Ray, if you could get an agency power DR pipe comparison im sure interest in this would go way up. Its obvious this pipe is better than most other single resonated, but your real competition is in the dual resonated pipes. That being the racing beat coming up, agency power, and the mazsport, which already looks like your pipe is quieter in cabin atleast (the important part for people wanting a quiet one)
Good job though guys! i wish i lived in your area to hang out for these shenanigans

We are one up on the Dual pipes. We are lighter. Lighter is better. :eyetwitch
Mazsport is not an issue. Theirs requires modification to the cross members. And it wears out in about 10-15,000 miles. I have some video of one.
Cattywampus 04-30-2009, 01:43 PM Wish I could hear that in person. You keep coming out with stuff my wife will ban me from spending. For some reason she thinks saving money for the baby is more important.:)
Flashwing 04-30-2009, 01:56 PM The primary issue is the fact that there's no flow data with any of the dual resonated mid-pipes to suggest that there's any kind of a performance gain. Couple that with a heavier and bulkier design AND the fact that the glass/wool packing will burn out due to the excessive exhaust gas temperatures.
In the end, you're looking at minimal performance gains, if any, and a product which will only work less as time goes by. In the end, all done to keep a mostly stock sound.
Our goal was to be able to produce a quality tone with a single resonator. While we clearly could fabricate a dual resonated version of our pipe I'm pretty sure that people will enjoy the sound.
Razz1 04-30-2009, 01:57 PM Well... doesn't the baby need a horn to toot?
You can clean up your old exhaust and make it into a horn.
Music helps creat intelligence so you win both ways.
A musical intrument and a musical sounding car.
nikkdizzle 04-30-2009, 02:49 PM this is exciting news guys.
defintely can't wiat till you guys put it into production. defintely looking to get a midpipe.
Ross_Dawg 04-30-2009, 03:34 PM start production already!
Cattywampus 04-30-2009, 03:58 PM Remember: Perfection over patience
jsjjr 04-30-2009, 06:04 PM I am quite surprised to see the responses to what I thought was going to be seen as "just another in a a sea of midpipes for the RX-8." Thanks, guys.
Perhaps it's got something to do with that old saying about "reputation" and "preceding"...
souljamcdiddy 04-30-2009, 06:14 PM I would be a convinced buyer if I didn't have a full exhaust allready. I have a single resonated pipe from Jason @ Rx7store and a Borla cat-back. It sounds almost identical to Flashwings ride (first car in video).
Your setup sounds sic and no doubt performs well. Excellent work!
alz0rz 04-30-2009, 06:29 PM Ah, it exists! .. and I don't have an RX8 anymore :(
Numbers look good, and numbers don't lie. ;)
Easy_E1 04-30-2009, 07:34 PM The production wheels are turning. :)
Striker-7 04-30-2009, 09:03 PM Ah, it exists! .. and I don't have an RX8 anymore :(

The numbers look very good!
Alz0rz, two things: If organ donors live on through the parts, BigRed still roams the roads. The Borla has been a great start to my own project.
Second thing? That avatar causes whiplash! :lol2: I'd love to see the original pic...
Whatever the case, I am always flattered that no matter the scandals surrounding BHR from time to time you guys still trust us and support our endeavours. We aren't perfect but we will always pursue it.
Scandals..... we have disagreements - nothing so dramatic as a scandal.
NoOdLe BoY 04-30-2009, 10:19 PM wow impressive. love the tone
TheGreatLouisianaRoadkill 04-30-2009, 10:19 PM i'm digging it. love the way flashwing's car sounded at idle. damn, i wish i could get mine to do that.
Ross_Dawg 04-30-2009, 11:01 PM i'm digging it. love the way flashwing's car sounded at idle. damn, i wish i could get mine to do that.
Seriously... I cant hear mine whatsoever at cold start and idle
dsire4u 04-30-2009, 11:40 PM 452th person to listen to this video
risky business 04-30-2009, 11:57 PM 452th person to listen to this video
no your not. i was 139..
Flashwing 05-01-2009, 06:13 AM I asked Todd to fade the music once the cars start.
Chances are that all you would hear would be road noise.
Thx, G.
By popular demand, I've rendered the video again without the music after the start of the 1st sample. I hate dead air in videos so I wasn't sure if the music would be an issue.
I've uploaded the new video and updated the link. Use the link above as the URL is new.
toneskii707 05-02-2009, 09:31 PM Sounds like a winner! Now hurry up and send me mine! Jk but thanks BHR for doin this I was on charles ass to make this(not literally)
2SeeKU 05-02-2009, 10:12 PM I need a new midpipe too... :-D
Want an Aussie test-bed?
Sounds great anyway.

Flashwing 05-03-2009, 11:56 AM hurry up! My cat is starting to smell.
Then give that kitty a bath!
laythor 05-03-2009, 12:11 PM i'll bathe it once BHR makes Flashwong scented bath soap

weight?
Easy_E1 05-03-2009, 03:07 PM sounds nice guys. good job.
weight?
Don't have a finished model yet. Just the prototype version. So we really don't have any factual weight numbers.
I know it's a lot lighter than the stock cat. :naughty:
ScottyFlow 05-11-2009, 12:37 PM Oh, the antici... pation!
I can't wait. I'm already thinking of all the wonderful things that will happen in the coming months... the majority due to the guys at BHR. This news kills one of the more nagging debates in my head. Cat? No cat? High flow cat? ah! BHR, Damnit!
From my experiences with BHR, I would buy the damn thing without even listening to it. Thats just the amount of faith I have in this company.
