View Full Version : Need help on the MazdaSpeed Intake
yokohamaboi 04-21-2009, 10:22 PM Ok ive searched and found people saying yes and no about sucking up water in the rain with a MazdaSpeed CAI. Please help cause im already in the process buying a MazdaSpeed CAI cause the K&N is on back order, should i wait or get the MazdaSpeed? please HELP!!! me choose!
mysql101 04-21-2009, 10:26 PM MS CAI is very nice. I haven't had any issues, and it rains a lot in Tampa. Just don't drive in 2' of water.
Jon316G 04-21-2009, 10:27 PM MS CAI is fine, get that.
Just use caution when washing the car, don't direct the water stream directly at the filter.
I ran mine through many car washes with no problems.
Wasn't until the dealer sprayed water directly on the filter did I get too much water in my intake and it bogged the car down (water across the MAF).
Someone here had a good idea to put a plastic bag over the filter while washing the car just to be safe.
And don't worry about rain... I ran through many storms with no problems.
mysql101 04-21-2009, 10:29 PM Water doesn't hurt the engine. It just turns to steam. It actually helps clean the motor out. But I'd recommend distilled water, or some clean source for scheduled cleaning, over street puddles.
Jon316G 04-21-2009, 10:30 PM Water doesn't hurt the engine.
Yeah... its not the water entering the engine, but the inaccurate reading across the MAF from the water.
yokohamaboi 04-21-2009, 10:34 PM Sounds Good To me! :D was that 2FT of water or 2Inches haha
mysql101 04-21-2009, 10:47 PM the filter is mounted pretty high. You'd be in pretty deep water to cover it.
yokohamaboi 04-21-2009, 10:50 PM Yeah your right. even though i don't have a Cold Air i always find a diffrent route with the least water :D also how many Mesh Screens do i need? 1 or 2? i only have one :[ my other one ripped :banghead:

The MS CAI should come with two screens, both within the couplings.

NoOdLe BoY 04-22-2009, 12:38 PM remember the water sock thingy!!! it works nicely.
ive actually put it under the faucet and the water ran off the sides. and it doesnt restrict air flow.

MS CAI doesnt come with any screens.
it will ask you to take the screen out of your stock airbox setup.

REALLY?!
Next time someone asks me if they should purchase the AEM or MS intake, I'll recommend AEM since they provide the screens in their couplers.
I know the screens in the OEM box can be a little tricky to remove.
I had to remove those for my Racing Beat intake.
Jon316G 04-25-2009, 02:39 AM I retract my previous post.....
I couldn't help it and had to download the MS intake installation manual.
According to the contents section, the MS intake DOES come with two couplers:

I have this MS kit on my car, I was pretty worried at the first, but the thing is the air filter came with filter wrap, so it helps to keep the filter dry and clean. And the funny thing is...my car seems to be running better and faster in the raining days.:uhh::lol:
Another solution is, to buy a heat shield and get it installed, that could help the stop the intake sucking water.
yokohamaboi 04-26-2009, 10:07 PM SCWEET! :D do you get better throttle response? ive read on peoples threads that they got really good throttle response after their install. well it should be here in 3 more days  can't wait haha :D
myriadshalaks 04-26-2009, 11:48 PM been installing mine this weekend.
currently the bumper is on the ground and is surrounded by various nuts and bolts and pins of various size and shape. but the intake is installed, and it sounds bitchin!
DOES ANYONE KNOW what to do with the sensor that went with the secondary vacuum line? it just hangs there grouped with the wires to the MAF.

I pulled it back and ziptied it with that line so it not hanging about.
kersh4w 04-27-2009, 01:27 AM i bought a vacuum cap variety pack at autozone. then i pulled that entire line off and capped it. you dont want a vacuum leak in your intake manifold. especially after the air filter.
myriadshalaks 04-27-2009, 02:01 AM you're talking about something else, kersh. that cap was included in my kit. but it was like trying to use a balloon as a condom on someone else two people away in a 40 person orgy ... not that i have experience with that ... not that there's anything wrong with that. anywho, i ended up using a cap from the stock box. not sure what it capped. seems to fit like a charm. we'll see.
i was talking about the sensor pictured in step 2J

fluid's answer sounds pretty good. i wonder if it's okay to just cut it as brettus suggested in another thread. maybe just save the actual sensor in case it's needed in the future to return to stock box.

I guess you could cut it but I would def cap it.
If you put it back to stock it puts you in a difficult situation by doing so though.

Zip-tie it out of the way like Fluid suggested.
I did the same thing, then wrapped it with electrical tape to blend-in with the wire loom and to keep the contacts from being exposed to the "elements".
TechGeek 05-04-2009, 08:52 PM Does anyone have electronic versions of the Install instructions? The dealer installed my when I bought the car. I seem to remember a thread about some arrows we need to pay attention to when putting the screens back in. Please post a link to the thread if you know what I'm talking about.
The reason I'm looking for instructions is the dealer seems to think the stalling problems I had (I will explain below) were due to a plate that was blocking air flow. I'm thinking what you are thinking... There's a plate in the CAI? The only thing in a CAI I can think of that resembles a plate is the screens. I asked the mechanic to show me when I see the dealer tomorrow. Not sure the SM knows what he is taking about.
So if you are interested the problem I had yesterday... drove for 10-15 mins then going up hill in 3rd at about 4K rpm. Suddenly felt the power drop... car stalled. put the clutch in and tried to re-start the car. Started is turning and the car seems to start but doesn't turnover and stay running. Pulled over and tried to start again... again starts but immediately stops running when you the started stops. Let the engine cool (after 1-2 hrs) and tried again. It starts and idles really rough (bouncing between 100-1000 rpm. guessing it looks like the engine is trying to adjust to starvation... of either gas or air. Dealership says there is a plate in the CAI they had to secure. What? Huh? Plate?
yokohamaboi 05-08-2009, 02:23 AM if you read my thread you would of clicked on this that jon posted.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=137687&d=1240641556 did they install the vacume cap? Hoses? check the MAF sensor if it's dirty and see if they put it on right.
