View Full Version : Is RP Supercat still the best high flow cat?
rapidfire 04-12-2009, 11:53 PM I'm currently looking for highflow cat that doesn't throw CEL and last a long time, and I know that RP supercat is the best option for a awhile and just wondering if it is still the best out there compare to all the new high flow cat that has been introduced in the market. Currently I still have the stock header, cat & MS dual exhaust cat-back. I know Access Port will eliminate the CEL but unfortunately it is not an option for me right now.
TheGreatLouisianaRoadkill 04-13-2009, 12:36 AM i've had my RP Supercat on my car for almost a year now. I like it alot. havent had a single problem and never threw a CEL.
Jedi54 04-13-2009, 03:01 AM RP is a great readily-available option. Best? That's a tough one.
I ran my RP supercat for about 16,000. Pulled it off yesterday....dead.
LOVED the sound it made, if I had it to do all over again, I'd still buy it.

Jedi54 04-13-2009, 03:11 AM my car sounds SO quiet with the OEM cat. :(
rapidfire 04-13-2009, 01:35 PM Thx for the response, guys. How about the new Exoticspeed high-flow cat and those sport/metal catalyzer listed on Japanparts.com (http://www.japanparts.com/db/partslist.php?dealer=6&car=93&middlesmall=1%3A14&maker=&volkey=)?
Jedi54 04-13-2009, 02:13 PM the HKS catalyzer is very tempting.

Check with RP.
They are good about covering these under "warranty"
rapidfire 04-13-2009, 09:45 PM the HKS catalyzer is very tempting.
Tempting indeed. I was thinking of getting a JDM catalyzer but it costs too much, unless I go FI which may be at least 2 more years. So I did some reading on USDM high-flow cat, most people seem to prefer RP cat(performance & weight) and just I was about to get one, I came across Exoticspeed cat and it seem to flow better with their 200 cell count but people starts to get CEL light :banghead:. Sometime I think too much research and reading are bad.
Jedi54 04-13-2009, 09:51 PM kenny: yup, on my list of things to do tomorrow. Thanks. :)
why would the Exoticspeed flow better? Aren't they both 200?

RP Supercat Feedback here.
alnielsen 04-13-2009, 10:04 PM doubt it,
i a have been running a 100 cell count metal cat with a big resonator for almost 20k miles.
and 3 track days.
still going strong.
beers
What pipe did you put that cat on. I'm getting a dead rp cat and I would like to replace it with that cat.

RP Supercat Feedback here.
DAMN! I'm having second thought on the RP supercat after reading those feedback.
kennyfrc1 04-13-2009, 10:59 PM I think you will see a common denominator contributing to failure.:eyetwitch
Just give it time.
rapidfire 04-13-2009, 11:38 PM Now I really have to re-consider my options.
Jedi54 04-14-2009, 12:36 PM kenny: hinting at the AP? ;)
Razz1 04-14-2009, 03:44 PM No, there have been several reported failures before the AP was out.
That's why I'm still waiting. I have not seen sustainable reliability.
If you ask TeamRX8 he will say don't buy it.
Jedi54 04-14-2009, 03:54 PM True, the early models failed prematurely. I think after they switched to the Bonez (sp?) cat, the reliability seems to have gotten better.
The AP will only diminish the Cats much quicker as Mazda's last few reflashes have RICHENED the fuel mixtures in an attempt to cool down the OEM cat and extending it's lifespan.
Leaning out the AFR's is going to cook them up. How long they will last with leaned AFR's over rich AFR's is a question that we don't quite have an answer to. (too many other variables)
Razz: if you cook yours before the 80k mark, just uninstall the AP and have the dealership replace. :)
Team is partial to the European Cat (?) that he ran a while back, seemed to perform very well and held up to abuse at the track. (much pricier then RP) and I think it's JUST the 'cat' so you need to buy the right size and get it welded in.
kennyfrc1 04-14-2009, 05:20 PM I have the RB Street Flash and have been quite happy with the tune.
It is designed keep the cat from exceeding critical temperature and I made over 200WHP with it. I think in my application the Supercat will hold up fine and I don't have to deal with that awful catless smell. :eyetwitch
r0tor 04-14-2009, 06:37 PM My supercat failed around 20,000 or so miles... it was the original design and they sent me a brand new one with the better design for free - no questions even asked. Supposedly they have had much better luck with this version. Also, many failures can be contributed to flooding and bad ignition systems...
rotaryspeed 04-14-2009, 10:14 PM i had a rp high flow and it crapped out within a year. no flooding, no ap, just normal everyday driving. if anyone wants it i'll get rid of it cheap. racing beat is the best way to go hands down. yes its louder (for now until their resonated version is released) but far better quality.
swoope 04-15-2009, 12:57 AM What pipe did you put that cat on. I'm getting a dead rp cat and I would like to replace it with that cat.
send me a pm about this. i will get back to you on thur.

TeamRX8 04-15-2009, 08:29 PM flows as good as a catless midpipe and your grandkids will have clean air to breathe, but whatever ...:squint:
rapidfire 04-15-2009, 10:54 PM I know it's impossible to get the best cat. I guess my question should have asked the best(reliable, resonably priced) high-flow cat amongst what's out there right now.
yongxun18 04-21-2009, 10:26 PM which one did you end up getting? I'm deciding on the RP too but still iffy on it.
rapidfire 04-22-2009, 10:23 PM I just ordered the RP supercat and the bolt kit 2 days ago, got a phone today saying they are back order til end of April or early May. Exoticspeed high flow cat just came out, people are starting to get CEL where they aren't suppose to and RB resonated mid-pipe isn't out yet. I only drive my car in the summer (about 5 months), RP cat by far still very popular, if it craps out on me next year then I just get it warranty replacement or RB pipe which should be out by then and tested by people here and improved by RB.
Fortunate Few 04-25-2009, 06:23 AM me and my friend just put in my rp supercat tonight. its AMAZING!
yongxun18 05-04-2009, 05:08 AM weird.... can't buy it from the site.... anyone else have this problem?

RP Supercat Dynoed 6 WHP everywhere across the curve for $400 making it $66.67 per HP.
The HJS cat($2000 USD) will need to make 30WHP to be of the same value. :squint:
Good Luck with that. :lol2:
crimson-rain 05-06-2009, 02:10 PM Curious, I've had my RP super cat for 40K miles and it JUST burned out (I'm at 109500 on my 8). I'm in the market for a new cat also but I've grown tired of the noise. I also have a Borla exhaust which possibly contributes to the noise (more than likely; saw a clip on Youtube with this setup and it was pretty loud just like mine). I was thinking of getting another RP hi-flo and an MS dual exhaust because a stock cat is $1225 and I want a new exhaust. I am ready to get a stock cat to quiet my 8 down, but I also don't want to really give up too much performance and I want to save some money to fix other things like the engine mounts (which is a priority, but my emissions is up the month too; VERY hard month for me).
Does anybody have this setup (sound clip)? Or any idea for a good setup for lower noise and good performance? I also have the Mazsport Ignition solution installed (it helps with better combustion, right??) if that helps with any suggestions.
Just looking for some help before I buy.

The Borla is a very loud catback that when coupled with anything other than the OEM cat is down right annoying. If would highly suggest the Racing Beat Catback for two reasons. First, you will likely find a member that will swap you their RB catback for the Borla. Second, the sound of the RB and Supercat is in my opinion perfect. No Drone on the interstate at any speed yet plenty loud at WOT. The combo is for sure the best of both worlds and gave me over 200WHP on the dyno.

You know I was looking at the RB catback. I dropped it off my list due to the weight (if I'm not mistaken the RB weighs slightly more than the stock). But I'll save quite a bit of weight on the supercat vs. the stock cat.
Thanks for the advice. You happen to have a sound clip would you next to stock setup? Sorry for asking too much. Youtubing right now.
sigfrid 05-06-2009, 10:51 PM Anyone look at Random Technologies? They are one of the best catalitic converter manufacturers in the united states. They have been around and produce long lasting high quality high horsepower products. I think I will give them a call and see what they can do. That should be my first mod as it seems to be a major restrictions.

jones75254 05-06-2009, 11:21 PM Supercat is pretty damn good IMO. I have had it for 20k miles and its still goin strong (crosses fingers).

YOU WEREN'T KIDDING!!!! The combo of the RB catback and RP super cat is awesome!!!! It's actually slightly quieter than when I had my Borla and stock cat (at most engine speeds for normal driving). There is no drone and the wife couldn't hear me pull up to the house.
This is a very good combo of sound and performance (the latter still up in the air for me). I'm not knocking your claim of 200hp on a dyno, I just don't know what my 8 will put down.
.... Come to think of it, I've never dynoed my car.
Big thanks kennyfrc1!

TrochoidMagic 03-25-2010, 07:55 PM has anyone documented the weight of RP supercat?
i've searched both the rx-8 stock weight threads and under RP threads... nothing.
all i can find is the stock cat being 23.4 lbs... which i thought was heavier.
anyhow, if someone can pls...
thx.
deadphoenix52 03-25-2010, 08:32 PM call RP and ask. theyre great people

Understood, which is why I'd like to find out the specifics, that is someone who's been running that cat with the A/F leaned out for good economy, showing that the HKS can survive the higher EGTs that result. The Euro is down now, and going lower, plus I may be able to grey-market source it from friends in Germany.
Jedi54 04-06-2010, 12:25 PM TeamRX8 has run it for some time on his track car. maybe he'll chime in.
