Greetings from Afghanistan! I miss going to the meets, reading this thread kinda sucked lol. The only good thing about being here is that I have been able to buy some parts. I will be home on mid-tour leave in mid April, so I will try to set something up to see all you guys. But I am stoked about the parts I ordered.
BHR Ignition, RE-medy water pump, BHR Flywheel, ACT Clutch, RB gauges, AEM intake, touchscreen DVD headunit, Metra Kit, and steering wheel control adapter for stereo. Only other thing to get on leave is a 10" sub and then I gotta install it all. That should keep me busy for about a day lol..

Any of you guys coming out to Dupont tomorrow? Chris and I will be there, we usually meet up at the Cracker Barrel on Ulmerton and then roll in to Dupont together.

As the participation from all you TAMPA friends has deminished over the last few months we now just roll straight to dupont. The event is starting earlier and earlier and it continues to grow and there are less and less available parking spots. Becasue of this we need to start getting there earlier I have decided that meeting at cracker barrel is somewhat too time consuming bc we never know who is actaully showing up there.

We hope to see some of you guys back out to the monthly meet!

Maybe he just ran over the turbo and it got caught underneath. You know, like how those recycling bins jump out in front of people. :)

This totally sucks. My engine died the other day. Looks like it blew a seal. I'm soooo bummed right now. :sad:

Pull the plugs. Can't really hydro lock a rotary. You should be fine.

Checked the compression and found that one of the chambers had zero compression. The other 2 were 160.

if a seal is broken then you would have no compression on that chamber

Definitely need to replace the engine. I'm looking for advice/recommendations on where to go. The closest Mazda dealer to me is Ferman on Florida Ave. I've never used them before so I don't know if they are any good or not. Or are there other options besides a Mazda dealer? Doesn't have to be local. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I've only got 55,000 miles on it, so I guess it is still covered under the 100,000 mile warranty.

The only engine modification is a MazdaSpeed CAI.

I've only owned the car since the end of October. I did one oil change on it in January. I don't have any of the maintenance history on it from the previous owners. I believe I'm the 3rd or 4th owner of the car.

at this point I would recommend that you take it to mazda. They will have to diagnose the car to determine if you are a candidate for a warrenty motor.

My name is Matt, I live in Parrish(bradenton area) I just did a turbo install using some parts I had around the shop I work at, also have a few other things done but nothing to major. I work over in clearwater, nice drive and enjoy every minute of it in the 8. The place I work gets 13b motors in as cores once in a blue moon, so currently Im looking for one to build. I have very little experience with the rotary which is why i think it fascinates me. If anyone ever wants to get together and nerd out about cars I'm always down.

As we announced last week that we will be having a "peoples choice award at the Fast Five meet. Their will be only 1st,2nd & 3rd place awards for this. Upon entry into the event everyone will recieve a "window tag" which will have a number on it. You will display this number in your windshield for others to denote your vehicle for voting. Also with this number tag everyone will get a piece of Ultra Evolution stationary to cast your vote on. EVERY individual will be responsible for writing down the number of the vehicle they like the best and bringing it up to the Ultra/NOS tent to put in the ballot box. Each person gets one vote. Around 9pm we will count up these votes and see who has the most overall votes for their vehicle. Trophies will be presented shortly after that. Nope, Kabura - Power is supplied to Kabura concept’s rear wheels from a 2.0 L version of Mazda’s MZR DOHC 16-valve engine.

Mannnnnn, I would love to go to the cob theater meet, ESP since it's RIGHT next to my house... Too bad I'm still missing my front right fender from that accident. Order new fender, bumper, side light, and fog light. Came out to around $700 from the Mazda dealer and the shop I'm taking it to, to paint it just put a body kit on a rx8 and the driver just told them to keep his back bumper, so they gave it to me since mine has a few rough spots on it. Even though I'm driving my '8 right now, it's in no shape for a show, which sucks cuz I just got the new system put in it =(

I took over to Fermans and they ended up replacing the motor and cat under warranty. I had them replace the clutch right away while it was all apart, that way I only had to pay for the part and no labor. They also put in new coils, plugs and wires and a few other things. I've only driven it a little bit so far but it seems to be running pretty good. :fingersx:

I left it running, went inside to the store came out and it was stalled. Smelling of an electrical burning smell. It had power to the lights and dash but would not even turn over.

So we will know tomorrow what the hell happen, thank God I have a back up car.

that NOS thing was a pretty good time... I cant believe how many people turned up there. One of the largest Northern Tampa meets for sure.

So I am both happy and pissed off. They got in the pcm on Friday night late, went to install it on Monday; well long story short is that was not the issue the whole time.

Turns out it was the PCV burned out and had no output to turn the PCM on. So it was only $450 for install and oil change. So I saved money!

What pisses me off is they had the part the whole time. Took 2 hours to fix it.

So I could have gone Friday night had they actually checked out the entire car.

The payoff was tonight. Blasting over the skyway with the windows down and listening to the exhaust note humming off the retaining walls. Makes it worth the wait to get it back right.

So the 8 is back in the shop again. The day after I got it back from the last repair I flip on the a/c and with in 30 minutes smell electrical burning smell. Turn the a/c off problem gone. So I take it back. They say it is the exhaust. I say to the guy "Really you think it is the exhaust, I am smelling" "I have had the mid pipe on there for over a year and just now i notice the smell?" So I take it back. Well today it starts sputter and stalls as I am taking my kid to school. They are telling me the coils are bad and need to be replaced.

So i told them if this doesn't fix the car we are going to have a serious talk about how much of a refund I am going to get on parts and labor.

So I am crossing my fingers and hoping this fixes it for good.

The grimlin is finding it way around, coils fixed the stalling issue, but the orignal issue with the buring smell when the a/c was turned on is the cooling fans.

So hopefully wednesday I will have it back. So in the past month I will have put about $1500 into the car.

We wil see how it all plays out.

The Tampa Bay Rotary Owners Club (TBROC) would like to gather input from all Florida rotary groups and owners on creating a well thought out and executed annual rotary meet/Dyno day in the Tampa Bay Area. We are currently looking into Dyno facilities that will be capable of housing a large number of cars, provide adequate facilities, and have available food and lodging nearby. We would like to model this meet after Rotor Fest. We are planning to have a best in Show, dyno competitions for 12a n/a and 12a boosted (turbo, supercharger or spray) and 13b n/a and 13b boosted (turbo, supercharger or spray). A 20b category will be added in the event there are enough 20bs attending. We would like to hold this meet in the Fall in order to provide a slightly better climate for our cars as well as giving everyone enough time to prepare for the trip. We will begin sitting down with local shops on FRIDAY MAY 20th to discuss this idea and would like to have input from you, the participants, and what would make this meet enjoyable and worthwhile for you and your families.

TBROC is also considering the opportunity for various Sponsorship of this event as well as space for vendors.

Finally got the car back, The new coils are making a huge difference and no more burning smell with the a/c is turned on.

Thinking I should be able to throw down on a Cobb soon here as well. Would have actually bought it by now, but I guess I can’t complain too much. I have had the car 3 years and have only spent $1500 on repairs.

Everything else was warranty or basic stuff.

Sounds like a plan. I think im off for the Nos meet.

It seems to be that as soon as I get something the way I want it, I let it go; sometimes for the worse, and sometimes for the better..... That being said it was time to say good bye to the RX-8, I loved it and it is still the key chain on my 2003 BMW M3. The RX-8 is a great car, and it taught me a lot about driving both on and off the track. I will miss the rotary sound out of my exhaust....

I posted earlier in this thread about a Rotary Meet this Oct and im here to give an update for anyone who is interested in attending. Rotary Fest 4 will be taking place in Orlando this year on Oct 16th, and as such TBROC will no longer host the alternative event in St Pete on the 15th of OCT. A catless not resonated mid pipe
and a set of taylor racing 409 spark plug wires.

the mid pipe has a stripped o2 bung but i have a new one to weld in. so if you want it let me know and ill get that done.

Don't know what your plans are while you're down here but Saturday 9/24 a few of us are going out to Orlando for a Cars & Cafe event, the RX-8 is the featured car this month there should be about 20 8's there.

Then back in the Tampa Area that night there's a Dyno Day which we may be going to, me and RWD need to get some baseline numbers before our builds :).

For others the Dyno event is at Pete Stop Motor Co in Pinellas Park and is only $10 for 2 pulls, the shop uses a DynoJet dyno so numbers should be accurate.

i will only be in Tampa on friday night. we're watching the Rays game that night and heading to Gainesville Saturday morning.

It looks like my hotel has an airport shuttle, but check in is not until 3pm. i will have to call during the day and see if i can check in early.

Sorry man I just got hired for a side job up in Trinity today and have to work all day Friday, hopefully you can catch the shuttle to your hotel or maybe another local member can help you out.

Me and Chris are definitely going, I'm pretty sure Glenn is going, but he might be going out there Friday night I have to check with him and I also have to talk to Jose to see if he's coming out there.

Where is there a convenient place to meet up near there?

Actually, I have decided to get a place in orlando about 10 miles from the meet, It's $56 with tax for the room. So if anyone wants to go up Friday night and crash there rather than drive on Sat morning that is cool with me.

Im going to be dropping my tranny to switch out the flywheel and clutch in a few weeks. I would rather do it on lift instead of jackstands...

The Suncoast PCA Porsche club are autocrossing in Zepherhills airport next weekend if anyone is interested. I took 2nd fastest time of the day there last month.
