View Full Version : SD Tour
ULLLOSE 03-16-2009, 06:59 PM Looks like it should be a great event, biggest field I can remember in BS, with some big hitters making a return to the class as well as some new faces.
I can't wait to watch SS, with Braun jumping in a GT3 for the first time. I am sure Thomason is a happy guy.
See you all Saturday.
mwood 03-16-2009, 07:44 PM BS should be a great battle...I hope FS is not running in the same group, I want to watch the action. Not sure how Kevin Dietz will adjust to the RX8, but Ron Bauer has plenty of seat time in Joe's car, so he should be good to go. Keep in mind that Brian (whatbadgerseat) won the Packwood Pro last summer, so I'd expect him to do well, also. btw, Bryan and Zach, from my region, have been going very fast, I have to think they will be right in the thick of things, also. Team RX8 says he's rusty, we'll see about that...seriously, it is going to be up for grabs, I think there are at least a half dozen guys who can get 'er done :)
It'll be great to see Matthew finally getting some seat time in the GT3. I expect he'll be his usual super fast self, but I've also seen some good drivers jump in the GT3 and have some problems getting dialed in...he'll probably just get in and go fast...speaking of GT3's, Chris Cox seems to have his car just the way he wants it and has been looking really good.
chiketkd 03-16-2009, 07:56 PM Link to SD NT entry list: Entry List (http://ams.scca.com/netforum/eweb/dynamicPage.aspx?site=scca&webkey=9923d8a8-4595-4138-986e-5a66d470be49&evt_key=47c191fe-ae19-45ad-b062-93f1b49d1b59&class=BS)
Definitely looks like a good competitive group in BS. Best of luck folks!

Yeah, he was quite pleased to see that happen after he helped the car owner with setup last weekend. :icon_no2:
Also look out for Peters in the Z06.
fastmike 03-16-2009, 08:42 PM I'm a Kumho guy but it looks like the new Hoho's are going to be putting up a good fight.
Should be interesting.

Dood, unless you are one of the drivers that still has a Kumho deal, what possible reason can there be to run the V710 at a National level?
TeamRX8 03-17-2009, 04:00 PM I have a codriver now
We'll be on my 295 A6s from Nats. It will be my first event behind the wheel since Nats.
spike.spiegel 03-17-2009, 04:17 PM Should be a great battle; I almost wish I was running in a different class just so I could watch!
See you all there--pray for no rain!

Lots of people saving pennies this year. I will be on my Kumhos from natls. I understand Brian/Cal will be on Cal's natls Hoosiers. :squint:

Peons...some of us have new tires

Yeah...well, you know me, I can show up on stickers and get beat by a newbie, I can show up on 80 run beaters and beat a National champ...just no way of telling which Mike is going to show up on which day...:icon_no2:

Chances are over the course of a weekend we will see both of them.... To bad that combination rarely results in a win.

I'm getting better...
Like Zach said (^^), pray for no rain...I have nothing remotely resembling a "rain tire" and I'd hate to see any of the great battles decided by who has the HoHo's and who doesn't :eyetwitch
TeamRX8 03-17-2009, 06:54 PM I'm showing rain on Sunday, fortunately I have a new set of Wets from Nats too :eyetwitch
not that it matters since whenever it rains hard enough for them to work the event shuts down :icon_no2:
I likely would have been on a new set of 255 A6s had I not been sitting around waiting on Hoosier West to call me back with bad news and the TireRack selling them all out in the process :banghead: supposedly a new batch is being produced this Friday. I only had 10 runs total on the 295s so no excuses there.
mwood 03-17-2009, 09:14 PM Sunday: Cloudy with a slight chance of showers in the morning... then mostly sunny in the afternoon
Sounds like last year. I hope FS is in the afternoon...screw BS, you guys don't have enough power to spin the wheels, anyhow:kiss:

ha ha. Was checking TR saw stock <8 and placed my order. Just showed up on my back porch today.
mwood 03-18-2009, 11:06 AM Anybody going to SD have an extra large Hoosier decal (black) for the hood? I'm not sure if Hoosier West is going to be there or if SCCA has any of the contingency decals...
btw, looks like BS got stuck in RG1 again this year...sucks. Seriously, sorry to see that.

I have some black Hoosier decals that I would be using, not sure if they are XL, looks like regular size to me, but you are welcome to them.
Got to love being first, that will make it extra fun in the AM since I plan to not come down on Friday.
mwood 03-18-2009, 11:31 AM The decal for the hood is 18"X5". I guess I could try using the smaller one and hope for a lenient impound decal checker...
JK, I'm sure one will turn up.
spike.spiegel 03-18-2009, 12:22 PM Dang, if it rains overnight again we'll get to dry the course like last year.
Won't get to watch SS either :(
I've only been to two NTs, but they had the tire manufacturer stickers at both, so I'm hoping they'll have them again at this event.

I've never had to pick up the contingency stickers at the event, so I wasn't sure...but, what you're saying makes sense. :)
Dogeater 03-18-2009, 01:07 PM I don't get to watch you guys in BS. :banghead: I thought running HS this year would allow me to watch you guys so I could figure out why I suck driving the RX-8 (other than the Hankook tires :uh:). If it does rain like last year I should be ok as the Mazda 3 I'm driving doesn't have the power to get outta control.
Hey Mike, I remember at the Packwood Tour they had a ton of Hoosier decals in the plastic tubs in tech.
Coby
MilesJ 03-18-2009, 01:09 PM No Hoosier stickers at Tech at SGMP. The SPS trailer had them though.
TeamRX8 03-19-2009, 10:06 AM Hoosier West won't be there
looks like I'll be having a set of fresh set of 255 A6s drop shipped in for El Toro
mwood 03-19-2009, 10:31 AM Thanks.
I have the decals taken care of...now, if I could only control the weather
40% chance of rain means 60% chance no rain, right? Who wouldn't take those odds?
edit: I just looked at the weather, still 40% chance, but forecasted for early Sunday morning through mid-morning...BS runs first group...possibly on drying course...its like deja vu, all over again. Sounds pretty much identical to last year. btw, how did BS get jammed in to RG1 two years in a row? ULLLLLLLLLOSE, did you piss someone off? :)
ULLLOSE 03-19-2009, 11:26 PM Thanks.

I seem to recall running heat one three years in a row in AS at the Bremerton tour. :icon_no2: It happens, all you can do is deal with it. The one good thing about running early in SD is less OPR - which is always really bad at that site for some reason.
mwood 03-20-2009, 11:01 PM ^I guess it is a good thing you have a tire warmer...;)
chiketkd 03-21-2009, 05:21 PM From preliminary results, it looks like Bryan Heitkotter has a 1+ second lead over the rest of the class. :)
Seems to be big spread in times - 3.5 seconds from 1st back to last place.

He did it on day 2 as well, putting 9 more tenths on the field.
No rain Saturday. Today the sprinkles started just as the 2nd drivers in BS were taking their final runs.
Thanks to Jason for letting me warm his tires, and also to Brian Coulson for letting me take a few practice runs on Friday. It was tougher than I thought to jump back into BS.

Looks like Wood took the win in FS and my buddy Hayter came through in STU!!!
ULLLOSE 03-23-2009, 11:06 AM WOW was Bryan fast. He drove awesome. I would love to make some excuses, but even at 100% I would have had nothing for him, he owned this event.:icon_tup: We ran in the same heat with SS ad he put most of them away, including Braun. :spank:
Anyone hear from TRX8? He was MIA on Sun. :dunno:
chiketkd 03-23-2009, 11:44 AM Wow - I guess it was Bryan's weekend. Isley, was there any discussion at the event about whether a driver of note on the West Coast is prepping a 370Z for the class?
Btw, big congrats to a former RX-8 guy, Elliot Speidell, who took the win in DSP.

It started raining right in the middle of my second run on Sunday. Freaked me out.
Where did you go on Sunday?
mwood 03-23-2009, 12:49 PM I also heard nothing about a 370Z coming out in BS...but, it would appear likely that someone will give it a try.
Congrats to Bryan. He just nailed it and was in another universe relative to the rest of BS this weekend. I can't say I'm surprised, like I've been telling people, I see him and Zach in the RX8 at local events and know what they are capable of...:)
I had kind of an interesting experience on Sunday. What happened was, because we knew it was likely to rain and I only had my A6's and the oem BFG KDWS tires to choose from, ULLLLLLLLLLLLOSE brought down a set of Hoosier Wets that he had bought a few years ago. Well, as it ends up, those tires were made in 2004, had a bunch of heat cycles in them (including street use in the dry) and not much tread depth...not knowing for sure how well they would work, we mounted them up on my street wheels, thinking they'd be better than the A6's, since it was coming down hard. Incorrect ASSumption, they were beyond horrible. After two runs of complete and utter pain, I threw the A6's on (even though it was still puddles) and picked up 5.5 seconds...
Even though the wets didn't end up working out, I really want to thank ULLLLLLOSE for loading them up, dragging them down to SD and letting me use them.:)
ULLLOSE 03-23-2009, 12:54 PM Even though the wets didn't end up working out, I really want to thank ULLLLLLOSE for loading them up, dragging them down to SD and letting me use them.:)
Thanks for testing those for me, glad I did not end up needing them. :uhh: I guess its back to street duty for the wets.
chiketkd 03-23-2009, 02:58 PM Not that I heard.
I heard nothing at the Dixie Tour either. I guess we'll see if one turns up as the season progresses...
there is a 370Z entered in L1 at the DC Pro, fwiw...
anybody got a spare $37K they can loan me to set one up? i'll share! ;-)

I know the owner. I'm not sure if her car prep will go beyond wheels & tires this season. She's actually considering driving my RX-8 @ Nats this year along with my other BSL co-driver.
Ha ha. 37K is the price of entry, don't forget to ask for another 5K for the tire budget!

Bryan/Zach were on 285 hohos. Ron/Joe ran the new 255 and seemed to have concerns.
chiketkd 03-24-2009, 01:00 PM Bryan/Zach were on 285 hohos. Ron/Joe ran the new 255 and seemed to have concerns.
Thanks for that tid bit. This is a pic of the 94/194 RX-8 driven by Ron/Joe: http://public.fotki.com/makofoto/2009-auto-cross-sol-2/san-diego-tour-2010/img3286.html
Those 255's looks as meaty as the 285's on that rim. Any idea what they're issues were related to?
My co-driver and I want to try the 255 A6's, but if we don't like 'em we'll probably go with the 245 Hoho's instead. Either way we will be on Hoosiers for the rest of this season...
mwood 03-24-2009, 02:33 PM I'm not sure if Joe and Ron were baffled as much by the 255's or by Bryan being in another zip code, time wise...:eyetwitch
But, being serious for a moment (if I'm capable...), Ron did mention they were chasing after "neutral" on the tires. Who knows...I still think, if running Hoosiers, that size makes the most sense.:)
chiketkd 03-24-2009, 02:54 PM I know rain affected some run groups on Sunday...
Pax Results: http://sccaforums.com/forums/storage/16/352463/SanDiegoTour.PAX-RTP.Final.pdf
mwood 03-24-2009, 04:29 PM PAX is pretty much meaningless for SD...they made a minor course change after RG1 on Saturday (didn't effect my line, might have effected other cars), a major course change after RG2 (estimated at .75 to 1.0 reduction in time, depending on car type) and then it rained mid day on Sunday...of course, certain members of this board would suggest that PAX is always meaningless ;)
ULLLOSE 03-24-2009, 04:43 PM ...of course, certain members of this board would suggest that PAX is always meaningless ;)
If it makes the slow guys feel better it did its intended job. :lol2:
BryanH 03-26-2009, 02:09 AM Finally coming up for air...
It was a pleasure running with the spinning triangles club. :) You all are class acts and a talented group of drivers to get one motivated! I'm at a loss to explain what happened. I don't feel like I drove beyond my normal potential, although I was pleased overall with my driving. At the risk of sounding like I'm rubbing it in I know I left a good 6-8 tenths out there on the weekend, so I was by no means perfect.
It must be the foglights and DSC sensors lowering the center of gravity on Zach's Sport model. :lol2:
Even the other battles in BS had wider spreads than I was expecting. I figured it would be more like my old ES days -- trophy spots separated by thousandths and large groups of drivers within a couple tenths.
I did manage to get a few photos of BS first drivers in between runs. My San Diego Tour gallery is here: http://www.pbase.com/bryanh/sdtour09
Video of some of my runs:
Saturday - http://www.vimeo.com/3830194
Sunday - http://www.vimeo.com/3861810
Anyone know who the Heat 1 announcer was? Sounded like he missed his coffee that morning. ;)
Now it's off to El Toro with pistons and camshafts and rods, oh my!
chiketkd 03-26-2009, 09:21 AM Very impressive runs Bryan - especially from the video shot outside the car.
