Hello everybody,

I am thinking about trading in my car for the RX8, But I just got a car in March so I would take a big hit, and am thinking I should wait, I was wondering if Mazda or anybody else was gonning to put out a Turbo or SC for the RX8?

thanks

Don't count on it. It has been discussed that a turbo on a rotary engine makes the exhaust too cold for the catalytic converter to work properly, thus hurting emissions. I think you will power levels stay the same. You will, however, see a power increase in the automatic transmission models when a rumored 5-speed auto replaces the current 4-speed sometime in 2006.

I am sure that Mazdaspeed is working on a turbo or supercharger for those of us willing to sacrcifice our cats early. Maybe they will have us sign a waiver or something. I hope it comes soon, as winter turns to spring I know that I will be looking for more hp.

Discussed many times in other threads. Do a search.

MS is supposedly working on a turbo that will be out in late 2004/early 2005.

There's a huge rotary following, so expect forced induction in the future. Don't expect it from the factory /w a warranty too soon, though. You could always buy an 8 now and put a turbo/supercharger on later. Drive the car first to determine if it's enough power.

Official word ?

Nobody knows. Though the 4th Gen 7 is remoured to be turbo charged. DEF NOT SUPERCHARGED !!!!!

Stangmatt: I musta dozed off there for a minute -- thought you said a turbo makes the exhaust too cold for the main cat to work...

Jeez, the exhaust hose starts smokin' and stinkin' and nearly melts when a twin turbo RX7 is on the dyno. A rotary is a heat engine to begin with and a turbo just makes more. Can you expand on your comment?

Which would make the current RX8 a better vehicle.

MORE HORSEPOWER... supercharged or turbocharged... mach nichts!

I drove a friend's third gen RX7 and all I can say is... WOW!

If someone can get the HP of the RX8 anywhere near 350-400...

:)

I think for the SpeedGT series, Paul Yaw has to crank out 450 HP out of the Renesis /w a blower... no turbo.

Power is very nice, who can argue that?!

In terms of exhaust temps, the exhaust ports moved to a side-port from the peripheral port has changed some exhaust characteristics of the rotary. Exhaust temps are down. The 3rd Gen or FD RX-7 is turbocharged so of course it will have scorching exhaust temperatures. The rotary itself produces lots of heat due to its inherent design... most of the time/surface area comprises of area of combusion/path. The heat will be less than a 13B-REW /w turbo (obviously), and theoretically should be less than the 13B N/A. Only a temp sensor can confirm that. Mazda's real problems are the cats/emissions. Maybe they need to design a new type of "cat"? They need an F1 budget to solve all of the rotary's design flaws.

The renesis design of side ports dates back to the 60's. Mazda tried it then... they also had other cool rotary concepts... there's a Jack Yamaguchi (sic) that has more info on it. It's a yellow book for the second gen RX-7.

You guys did not hear? Mazda is going to put the motor from the civic in, making a MUCH faster car. Don't believe me, just ask all our "NEW" young members how much faster every other car out their is, you'll see. Maybe a tiburon 6, since I understand from a recent thread the car is faster then an enzio.....

Hell, ask some of the new guys, they will tell you a john deere riding lawnmower engine is an improvement, but only if you put the K&N kit on.....

I'm only reporting what I've read. This was from a recent edition of MotorTrend or CarAndDriver. I'll have to look up the article again.

i was at mitsuwa a few days ago and checked out the latest option magazine, which featured greddy's new turbo kit and blitz's new supercharger. i don't read read any japanese but i'm guessing from the bits and pieces i could read (ie the numbers and alphabets) the greddy kit adds 65ps. anybody else read this option issue who understood it?

Stangmatt66, too cold? I thought the opposite, too warm?

I was contemplating the possibility of 400hp/400lbs.ft. of torque. In looking at the dyno graph of the stock engine and noticing the flat torque curve, I was thinking how much fun it would be to have the above-mentioned power over an equally broad band of rpm's. Most v-8 engines would be lucky to have peak torque over a range wider than, say, +/- 1,500 rpm. That much power and predictable drivability could be nothing short of awe inspiring.

After reading this board for the past few weeks, I've decided to trade in my 8 for a used Daewoo Nubira so I don't keep getting burned at red lights. :p

Yeah, but can you get the bush hog attachment to pull behind you to mow grass along with it? You know the owner's manual does say not to tow stuff...

Now that's the kind of information I came here for. :)

Didn't know the Honda boyz come here too. :(

That is good to hear! I swear if I see one more rx v lawnmower thread I will shoot myself!

LOL...the dreaded Renesis vs. Briggs & Stratton debate. Abe Lincoln never had it this rough when he faced off with Douglas.
