i knew the trubo xs exhaust plus midpipe were loud... but i just installed it today and wtf.. its rediculous, with silencers can be ok when i get used to it, but without silencers.. unbeleivable...

any ideas or comments.. how do i keep a low profile with this.. is it possible??

MAKE sure the noise isnt coming from the side or the car, if it is then you gotta an exhaust leak...i got the turbxs on too, when it was leaking that thing was LOUD, i put a gasket in and its pretty quiet, when coming out the back end on a stock exhaust

heh - 'loud'

personally, i think the turbo xs is easier on the ears than say a midpipe + hks single side...(granted i still love the sound of the hks)

Mine has been on for a while now but not knowing a real comparision to go by, it sounds great, not extreme as others would post it as being. of course my aftermarket BBQ resonators can seem loud when installed...

i think its either leaking or loose somewhere.. it doesnt sound normal

stock will not go back with TXs midpipe, cause of the flange difference and length

Same experience here... my midpipe sounded insanely loud at first, but its actually reasonably quiet when its not at WOT, and even at WOT it doesn't sound like I'm attacking a metal shed with a band-saw to me anymore.

aside from noise, are there any downsides to the leak? does it mess the exhaust flow up?

^Yes it is. Turbo XS is just like AP Exhaust. I will soon have you my AP. Soon...

I have mine with the cat on.... its still on the loud side, but not bad with the silencers in. Be sure to see about extending the tips before you melt your rear end!

Depending on the size and shape of what's causing the leak, it can decrease flow, but it will vary depending on the severity. Say, if the joint between two pipes is misaligned, there would be a bend (which will contribute to resistance) and turbulence caused by the vacuum left behind when the exhaust is going through the leak.

yea im hoping i can put the stock cat back in, too bad the bolts broke while taking it out, i have to get new bolts.

the reason why i think it leaks is that sometimes i hear a much louder sound than normal..

and the guy i got the exhaust from said he never had a problem with melting the bumper.. but anybody know where to get some nice looking tips? preferably burned tips something like this http://corruptmotors.com/images/agency/rx8exh1.jpg

the turboxs WILL fit the stock exhaust, i have it on mine...

its only loud with the exhaust leak TRUST ME, i got a gasket and its pretty quiet, it opens up and makes the car louder at around 4krpm

I just ordered a foot of stainless tube (3") and had them extend the pipe out before the tips, but most good exhaust shops should have some or at least be able to order what you need.

I have heard some did not have bumber issues as well, but I noticed mine start to get a little discolored and starting to melt after a long trip (~2 1/2 hours), so I got it fixed right after that.

Turbo XS isnt really that loud, you just have to let it burn a bit. After a while it wont be as loud. And hey man its a rotary its supposed to be loud plus you have 0 restrictions with the Turbo XS so its going to be louder than anything else. If it bothers you too much just put a resonator in.

As far as the melting the shrouds, they will melt if it gets hot enough. Just extend them out and voila.

here is what mine sounded like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7c7y5nlrWU

after going turbo it is quieter

any specific way that i can tell if it is leaking, the installer told me they got a new gasket from mazda.. but who knows those people are shady

and where is it likely to leak, at the header or between the midpipe and cat pipe where the springs are?

The reason it is so loud....

To say it simply: Well... its just loud hahah

Put the car on jackstands. With the exhaust cool, start the car and run underneath. Put your hands all around the front flange where the header meets the midpipe, to check for air blowing out. IF you find none, QUICKLY move to the rear flange where the midpipe meets the catback and repeat. You have to do this quick, because the exhaust heats up quick and then you won't be able to put your hands near it.

IF you feel no air leaks at either flange, then you are good to go.

can wait till i do my tax and order this exhaust already,

but if your gone keep the exhaust i would change those tips or you'll melt your shrouds

EDIT: did it throw a CEL

heres a few pics of the rear of my midpipe flange connection to the Turbo XS catback exhaust. as you can see it hangs low at the flange , so if you bottom out real hard , leakage can develop due to distorted flange, its a good idea to have all gaskets checked if it seems too loud.

^Thats so true. Unlike the AP exhaust. My friend Mike would bottom out going to SoCal and over time he had a exhaust leak. Quick fix.

would turbo xs work with stock setup ??

dozer
02-06-2009, 01:21 PM
^yes the the midpipe will bolt right up to the stock exhaust, but you will need a gasket

Macius8
02-06-2009, 01:25 PM
Have mine xs with the stock cat as well, sounds great and not too loud. Regarding the exhaust leaks, go to a auto store and get some universal exhaust gaskets, modify them to fit the flange, use two layers maybe, tighten the bolts up really well and you should be good to go. I bottomed out a couple times already but no problems.:)

its too loud, its too smelly, im sensing you didnt know what you were getting yourself into. lol. if you want, i can meet you in bethesda to let you know if your car sounds normal. those gaskets are $50.

also, i dont go anywhere (except the race track) without my silencers in.
