View Full Version : Any one with an 8 in the Hampton Roads Area
P-Rock 12-14-2003, 12:27 PM Hey what's up I am looking for any one with an 8 in my area in Newport News Va. I am with a club called Streamlinemotorsportsva.com witch is located in Hampton/newportnews. My name is pat by the way and I have been to most of the import show in va and nc like richmond winchester, greenbro, etc..
DeNile' 12-14-2003, 03:47 PM Yeah I'm in Hampton, VA as well, I just got my 8 so no upgrades as of yet, I like your painted brakes, who did them?
P-Rock 12-14-2003, 03:49 PM I did, engin paint, tape, and some news paper. I am glad to hear that some one is in the same area with an 8
Rotary Nut 12-17-2003, 11:51 PM Present and accounted for. I'm in Newport news and work on Ft Eustis. Got my Sunlight silver 8 on Oct 31st. We have 6 of them on base already, Rxtreem is also from Ft Eustis! I live in the Stoneybrook section of NN.

supa-gee 12-25-2003, 04:22 AM I'm in Norfolk/portsmouth. I've only seen two on Naval station... I'm looking to upgrade my sounds... any suggestions???
BillR 12-28-2003, 09:55 AM I'm in Va. Beach.
Got my yellow 8 on Dec 1st.
Also own a G35 coupe with a few mods.
P-Rock 12-28-2003, 08:38 PM Yeah you can got to Sound Shop on mercury blvd in hampton. it is good to hear that there are some peps in the tidwater area. Hope to see some of you all at some car shows this summer.
Katchoo 01-21-2004, 03:33 PM I am in Chesapeake VA but work in Suffolk. Having lots of fun driving back and forth on 664/64. At least the roads are somewhat smooth.
P.S. Watch out for the dealer prep folks at Casey Imports (Newport News) - turns out they filled my tires to 45 PSI cold. I found this out the morning after taking delivery. Driving home the previous evening, in the rain, in an unfamiliar new car, on unfamiliar roads, and having the tire pressure light pop on makes for an interesting experience. Pressure was 52 PSI warm. Plus they attached the rear temp plate with HUGE self-tapping screws rather than the required fine thread machine screws. This obviously buggered up the threads of the blind nuts. Took me 2 days to fix the problem (long story there) - all to mount a license plate on a new car. Amazing.

First team did that to my car too. How did you fix it. The blind nuts fell out on mine. First Team added nylon inserts and then used machine screws. I hate dealers, they all suck!
Katchoo 01-22-2004, 07:11 AM That is what I had to do. I tried to get my hand up there to put the blind nut back in (only one broke loose and fell out)...not a chance. Finally I had to go down and get some of those nylon do-dads and modify it so it would accept the machine screw. I also cut the 'head' off of one and used it as a washer on the other side to equalize the spacing between the bumper and the plate. It looks fine now but it really ticks me off that thier attention to detail on a new car was that bad.
I live 50+ miles from that dealer so I didn't go back to get it fixed by them...would have I done that anyway? Not sure.
The tire overpressure was just downright dangerous.
1RX8FAN 02-01-2004, 01:22 PM My husband and I live in Newport News and we ordered a yellow RX8 about 4 weeks ago. We hate to wait so long but none of the dealers in the area had exactly what we wanted. We're a little concerned about some reports we've heard that the RX8 uses a lot of oil. We've also heard about some problems with flooding. Anybody else hear about these issues or had any experience with them?
Elara 02-02-2004, 09:17 AM Originally posted by 1RX8FAN

It'll use maybe a quart of oil every 2500-3000 miles- not really an issue. Rotaries always use a small bit of oil.
And some people have had some flooding issues- I've never had a problem, even when I didn't know about it an shut it off right after turning it on. Just warm the engine up a bit before you turn it off, and you should be fine. I find 2-3 minutes is about what it takes to warm it up a bit.
umpuck 02-02-2004, 02:31 PM Hey, im in va beach....maybe im the one someone saw at the naval stations :P. I've had the car since mid july. Only thing i got done is get strakes, tint, and added borla exhaust. Im right on the oceanfront...if anyone is curious on the sound of the borla just ask :P
umpuck 02-02-2004, 02:32 PM btw 1rx8fan, dont worry about the flooding you have to just remember if you start the car, dont turn it off until it hits normal operating temp. Other than that had hte car for more than 6 months...no problems and still lovin every minute of my drive.
1RX8FAN 02-02-2004, 08:11 PM To umpuck and Elara - thanks for the information on the oil and flood issues.
In case anyone is interested, there is going to be a car show in Virginia Beach the weekend of May 1 & 2. We are in the Tidewater Mopar Club and had our Dodge in the show last year. It was pretty cool to be able to park on the boardwalk and have the ocean in the background for photo opportunities. The show is open to all makes and models.
umpuck 02-02-2004, 08:24 PM hey 1rx8fan...i may be there :) i live right on the oceanfront so i wont miss it. what kind of dodge is it btw? if it is a viper you definately will expect me to be there...i've always wanted to sit in one! <wink wink>
1RX8FAN 02-03-2004, 06:43 AM i'd like to sit in a viper too. don't have one though, out of my price range. i've got a dakota r/t, you can sit in that. hope to see you there.
umpuck 02-03-2004, 07:40 AM 1rx8fan, you ordered ur 8 4 weeks ago, how much longer is the wait?
1RX8FAN 02-03-2004, 12:19 PM it should be here within the next 4 weeks. the dealer said it usually takes about 8 weeks. we are anxious and the wife is making plans for pinstripping. she wants to put the rx8 in some of the car shows, along with the r/t.
umpuck 02-03-2004, 01:41 PM hmmm pinstripping? :( what color? I know you guys will make it look sweet for the shows. PLEASE Keep me updated i would like to see the progress :). It sucks being in this area without an rx8 in site! I have seen 2 on the road since i got this car in july. i have a ti grey 8 with the appearance package, strakes, tint, and borla if you are curious on how those will look. Im saving to get a bodykit, but im undecided on which kind :P.
1RX8FAN 02-03-2004, 06:30 PM This is the wife. I'm thinking of something to bring out the design on the hood, then some striping on the sides to accent the lines of the car. We downloaded some RX8 photos from the web and printed them so my husband (the artist in the family) can try drawing designs on the car to see how it will look.
umpuck 02-03-2004, 10:00 PM You know what may be pretty sweet if you guys are up for some suggestions. You will eventually find out that the brake rotors will rust. I am going to do this on my spare time with the color shooter used....but maybe you can make the brake calipers yellow along w/ the brake rotors. That's just me if i had a yellow 8 :P.
umpuck 02-03-2004, 10:00 PM oh sorry here's the link.

Rotary Nut 02-05-2004, 07:49 PM I hear there is an autocross in Pungo at the old airfield this Sun. Anyone planning to attend? I can't as I have to work.
Katchoo 02-06-2004, 04:21 PM Hmmmm....sounds like there are a bunch of us Tidewater RX-8ers out there. Has anyone approached a local dealer to see if they want to sponsor a club...maybe?
Discounts on parts...service...meeting place....uhhhhhhh
<crickets chirping>
Ok...I shall go back and sit in my corner.
*sniff*
1RX8FAN 02-06-2004, 07:23 PM Hey Katchoo, I don't know if anyone has approached a dealer, but they usually sponsor club events, not the club, but you can always ask. Some dealers give discounts to club members they are affiliated with, but you have to establish a good working relationship first. I am a member of the Tidewater Mopar Club. You don't have to drive a Mopar to belong, but I think a club for only RX8 owners would be good. I don't have the time right now to try and get something started, but I'd be interested in being a member. If you have the time, see what you can do.
Katchoo 02-07-2004, 03:37 PM I was in a Corvette club back a few years ago and they sponsored the whole club...pretty cool with lots of active members.
Anyway, if I ever get on good terms with my dealer (didn't buy the '8' from them) then I may ask the question.
Katchoo 02-15-2004, 08:51 AM OMG! I just became a "member" verses a 'junior.' YAY
See? Posting stuff about other stuff pays off!
Now, when do I get my official mebership card and decoder ring? Heh heh
*scampers out the back door before the gathered crowd notices a crazy person has been let loose in the forums again*
umpuck 02-16-2004, 12:02 PM haha im just going to show off also, i just turned into a Senior Member. HA HA <snort>
Katchoo 02-16-2004, 07:42 PM <snort>? OMG...HE SNORTED!
That is so...so...
Well it is! Don't argue with me!
1RX8FAN 03-16-2004, 06:30 AM After ten long weeks our RX8 has finally arrived. The dealer was pretty good about it. Mazda never did give them a delivery date so they had the district manager do a search for one that matched what we wanted. The dealer included the spare tire at no extra cost since the car had everything else we wanted. Of course it would rain today......
BillR 03-16-2004, 07:24 AM Well, I get to take mine in today for service. 2 Recalls and now the check engine light came on.
1RX8FAN 03-16-2004, 06:32 PM Do you mind if I ask what the recalls were for?
RaceBannon 03-16-2004, 10:32 PM Hey- I'm based at Oceana Master Jet Base. I have a Titanium 8. Had mine since November and it's going into the shop in the morning for the recall. Going to Hall Mazda--hope it goes well..
1RX8FAN 03-17-2004, 06:03 AM Another owner with a recall? We're getting nervous. What's the recall for?
BillR 03-17-2004, 08:55 AM The recall was for the airbag and some type of tranny damper.
Of course they FOUND NOTHING on the check engine light. I ased about getting the latest ecu flash and was told it doesn't exist. Pretty friggen bad when "I" know more than "Mazda service".
I guess from now on, I'll try Hall for service. First Team sucks. My car interior was dirty, the radio was left on SO LOUD it startled me (I turned it off when I dropped off car) when I turned the key on. They broke my keychain, had to wait for a stupid ass to figure out the paperwork for a loaner (1/2 hour), and the same when returning the loaner.
When I drop off my G35, their service procedures are actually pleasant.
Katchoo 03-19-2004, 10:11 AM Wierd....I have used First Team (1 time) and was very happy with thier work.
Maybe just a bad hair day at First Team.
1RX8FAN 03-23-2004, 07:41 PM Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who does handpainted pinstriping? We've talked to people who will do the tape pinstriping, but we'd rather not go that route.
umpuck 03-26-2004, 03:38 PM I had my car since july, im stationed out of fort story and live at the ocean front...if i may ask racebanon did u put different rims on the car? cause i saw one the other day w/ some. Im about to take my car in for the recalls....so far a lot of the people i talk to say it was an in and out fix. Nothing to be worried about really, ppl dont even recognize the difference before and after taking it to the shop. well if any of u guys are thinking about getting aftermarket exhaust i got the borla back in december if you are in the oceanfront and would like to hear it. I am also curious if you guys added any aftermarket parts?
BillR 03-27-2004, 07:28 AM I own Audio Connection on Laskin Road (accross for Hilltop North) , and I would love to hear the exhaust!!
I am there M-F.
Thanks
umpuck 03-27-2004, 09:12 AM Hey i would like to speak to you as well! Ill gladly bring the car around so you can hear the borla...but maybe you can help me out. Before i got the 8 i had an suv w/ a coustic amp and jl audio w3's in some kinda bandpass box that they make. I've been trying to get rid of it for almost a year now...(well not really trying that hard but wanted to see the best thing to do for it?) If not, maybe you guys can make a coustom made box for me??? :)
btw my name is art :P
BillR 03-29-2004, 08:30 AM Sorry, we do home audio only. Can't help out on the car audio stuff.
But I do look forward in hearing the Borla. No big rush, when ever you are in the area and have a minute.
Bill
umpuck 03-29-2004, 11:13 PM ok perhaps sometime tomorrow (tuesday) ill stop by :)
BillR 03-30-2004, 04:05 PM Art,
Good to meet ya.
Thanks for stoppin by, the Borla sounds like me.
We'll keep in touch.
umpuck 03-30-2004, 04:26 PM my pleasure.....your store seems real neat. Ill know where to go when i want one of those tv's! Im saving up for a bodykit and i'll let you know how that goes, as well as the exhaust finishers. O perhaps intake, but still deciding.......
BillR 03-30-2004, 04:30 PM Were is that thread about the foglights you mentioned???
Can't find it.

BillR 03-31-2004, 08:27 AM Ah, thanks.
I was looking for DIY on main page.
THATS why I couldn't find it.
Rotary Sensei 04-07-2004, 10:25 PM Hi Mazda bretheren!
I'm in Virginia Beach but I am a 3rd gen Guy. I have building and porting rotary engines for over 20 years, lots of fun. I thought I'd pop in and check out the new rotary crowd.
Chris

umpuck 06-21-2004, 10:18 AM BILL i drove by and saw ur G35 hehe is everything ok w/ ur 8??? Did u get the exhaust put in yet? :) I was just curious if u were thinking of getting in on that group buy for the ms style body kit. And if u are, where were u going to take it? i stopped by 3 body shops and they quoted a ridiculous price....any ideas? Or anybody else in the va beach area w/ ideas!?!? :)
BillR 06-21-2004, 11:04 AM I haven't done anything to the 8 yet. :D
But I am sure I will do the borla sometime soon.
P-Rock 06-21-2004, 12:02 PM Hey John at Socal did me good talk to him at 714-724-7978
Tell Patrick Told you to call him and he will hook you up.
P-Rock 06-21-2004, 12:16 PM Sorry I thought you had an 8, I have seen that red 7 before. I live in Newport News and I hang out with Randy. Any way Here is and up dated pic of the 8, but don't get used to it yet the Veil Side kit is coming and will be here any day now. Don't worry I will post some ne pics when I get it.
Rotary Nut 06-21-2004, 12:22 PM Nice"8" P-Rock! What wheels are those?
I See O.Z is now selling the Superturisimo's now in the states thru the Tire Rack.
I haven't seen you around here! I live in the Stoneybrook section of upper Denbigh in Newport News. The only Silver 8's I have seen are on Ft. Eustis (mine was the first).
Looks like it's time for an RX-8 get together here in Hampton Roads!
P-Rock 06-21-2004, 12:30 PM I am down by the ship yard. I have the Enki Nt03+m 18X8.5.
Yeah I am down for a 8 meet. My car club has a car wash at the old Chi CHi's on the 26th of june. How about then? (Denbe Blv) and Jeferson.
Rotary Nut 06-21-2004, 12:52 PM Hope to see ya there! What time?
P-Rock 06-21-2004, 02:16 PM One O'Clock sound good. I'll make a new post thread for every one to see tonight unless some one wants to do it now. But, what everyone wants to do is fine..

P-Rock 06-22-2004, 06:44 AM I am going to install my kit, veil side comes good with out any cutting or drilling, but Gary's Custom is going to panit it.
umpuck 06-22-2004, 09:06 PM how much is he charging u if i may ask? I can't stand the quote i got...it's making think twice about getting hte ms style kit
P-Rock 06-23-2004, 06:41 AM around 1,700 I had ordered it over a month ago, they are still makeing a batch in japan. It's going to be a while.
P-Rock 06-23-2004, 06:43 AM He charges I think 700 for paint and install, But I will be installing it my self so that nocks of 100 for install
markris77 06-28-2004, 03:34 AM Hey what's up VA. I posted in the car wash thread, but this looks a bit more active. Sorry to hear u guys got rained out. I'm stationed up in AK at the moment and about to drive out on July 6th for Langley. I'm actually passing through Edmonton and already have talked to the guys at Canzoomer. Get to check out the shop and get up with Maurice, so that should be cool. And his lovely Niece is going to be my local tour guide, lucky me. Anyway, looking forward to getting up with the other 8 owners in the area, I'll be there at the end of July, after the crosscountry trip and taking some leave (vacation). Who's a good Mazda dealership to work with there? Not sure where I'm going to live yet, so lets just base off of Langley AFB. I'm friends with the guy who sold me my car and have a really good working relationship with the service department. So I planned on checking out and meeting the Mazda people in the area 'before' my car HAS to go in the shop for whatever reason. Then on the better side, what's a good race shop, anybody good with working on the 13B? Not going to get to crazy with it yet cause of the warranty, but would like to get a good working relationship with a reputible shop down there. I read you guys talking about a club, and about sponsorship. If its not done before I get there i wouldn't mind talking to the good people at Mazda, a good race shop and throw in a good sound shop as well for some sponsorship...i got good people skillz, haha. Also, Battle of the Imports is coming there in August over in Petersburg. Once I'm there and all settled in I'll get a thread together for a Caravan, if there isn't one already. Looking forward to meeting you guys...sorry for the long post, Late --Mark
Rotary Nut 06-28-2004, 10:25 AM Hi Mark
I hope the 8 fares well on the trip. I drove to Fairbanks and back way back in the mid '80s. It took me 11 days! I was stationed at Ft. Wainwright from '83 - '86. Hope the seats are comfy in the long run. As for dealer ships there is Hampton Chevy-Mazda at Coliseum and Mercury. Don't go near Casey imports on Jefferson as I have had nothing but service nightmares from them which led to my last car being lemon lawed because of inept service.
To get to the store in Hampton just make a left out the Langley AFB west gate, then make a right onto Hampton Roads Center Parkway. At the next light make a left. Then take it all the way down to the flyover at Mercury Blvd and get in the inside Left turn lane there are two just get in the right hand one. When you make the turn just stay in the right lane and the next light should be the entrance to the dealership.
Welcome to the area and hope to see you soon. Have a safe trip.
P-Rock 06-28-2004, 10:59 AM I hate those guys. I went to test drive an 8 when I wanted one and they wouldn't let me drive one. They didn't think I was seruios. So I went to the Va beach one and they let me test drive one and that night I got it. I took it to the otheir delearship and laught at them and told them they had lost a customer.
Rotary Nut 06-28-2004, 11:12 AM Which dealer was that Pat? Hampton let me test drive my future ride, no questions asked.
Now Casey on the other hand didn't seem at all interested in making a sale but then again the sales lady I dealt with was familiar with the Repurchase I just went thru.
P-Rock 06-28-2004, 12:12 PM Both of them did that to me. I geuss they saw a young man and just thought I was driving them for kicks. (punks)
Rotary Nut 06-28-2004, 12:32 PM I guess me being twice your age was the difference! It could also have been an insurance thing. :D
What do you do for Northrup-Grumman?
markris77 06-28-2004, 04:02 PM Thanks for the info. I'll check out the Hampton one. But I have no idea where I'm going to live. I'll probably shoot for semi close to base to rent, then play it by ear when I look to buy. I'm pretty familiar with the area by map. I haven't been there since like '94 for vacation, but I grew up in Va Beach until I moved to Jersey for most of High School. Lived in Norfolk, Chesapeake, Charlotsville...it'll be nice to be back home, haha. --Mark
umpuck 07-02-2004, 10:27 PM well guys i think im getting the urethane ms style kit....Ill keep you guys posted. Wish me luck, i hope it goes well with this bodyshop :).
art
markris77 07-02-2004, 11:38 PM I'm going to order the Apexi Super Ground Kit. It showed like 8 or 9 Horse on a STI, and shows that it works, for some reason, even better on Mazda's. I'm going to order it and get it shipped to the folks house in Ohio. When I stop there on my route from AK to VA I'll put it on. I'll let you guys know how the trip and the mods go. Late --Mark
umpuck 07-24-2004, 06:44 PM WAKE UP HAMPTON ROADS! heheh still waiting on my ms style bodykit...how is everyone still doing with their 8? :)
markris77 09-09-2004, 08:16 PM I C&P this post i did in another Va Bch/Richmond thread...
So uh...let's get a roll call. Va Bch, Norfolk, Hampton, NN and so on, over to Richmond. who would be interested in meeting up? lets look at a few weekends in advance so everybody can plan a head and all. Oct 2nd? I'll be at NOPI the weekend before (thats right, touch me!), then its Streamline Showoff in Hampton. then there's something the 9th. would love to do an 8 thing, but if this second one is a bust also...i'm going mixed car club searching! don't push me...i'll do it!!! heh.
so lets get a roll call, and then we'll choose a place to go.
just an idea...i wouldn't mind meeting at one place, find some good driving roads, and caravan to lunch.
umpuck 09-10-2004, 02:01 PM im here
Jers8 09-13-2004, 06:09 PM I'd be up for something in October, though definately not the weekend of Oct 15th/16th....so far.
markris77 09-13-2004, 07:06 PM I'm adding everybody who's replying to the 'list' and when we figure something out I'll repost on this thread and PM everybody. So keep em coming!
shelleys_man_06 09-21-2004, 02:06 AM I want to take a road trip from Houston to Hampton Roads, VA to visit my fiance. I heard Buckroe Beach is polluted, not to mention every time I've been there, jellyfish a-poppin'. Any truth to this? Also, are there any good driving roads in Virginia?
markris77 09-21-2004, 05:32 AM I just got back in the area myself, and haven't been here since I was a kid, but I haven't found any. But if you plan on doing a drive...when I came down from Alaska I went through West Va...I could look it up and give you the bit of Highway. But it was about 30 miles or so, between two toll booths...nothing but 3 lanes of twists and turns and perfect road. It was one of my favorite stretches, by far. I wish it wasn't so far of a drive just for a little stretch, but at least I get to drive thru it when I visit the folks. Msg me if you really want the stretch. Somebody who's been here for a while...hook him up with what he needs to know! --Mark
umpuck 09-28-2004, 10:24 PM Hey it's been quiet here in hampton roads...are we planning anything? :)
art
markris77 09-29-2004, 05:46 AM I was trying to get some people together, but there's only been a handful of people interested. Since then, i've found a car club and am meeting up with them this Sat to check them out. then next weekend its over to Petersburg for a show. i think the weekend after there's another show in NC I might go to.
If anybody around here starts getting mod crazy and throws a CEL...i got the CanScan cable! so feel free to PM or e-mail for a reset.
umpuck 09-29-2004, 11:04 PM so what have you done to yours so far?
shelleys_man_06 09-29-2004, 11:27 PM Do you guys know when y'all are going to meet up in November and December? I would love to hang out with y'all, RX-8 or none. :)
markris77 09-30-2004, 05:28 AM umpuck,
notta so far, except small stuff. upgraded my lites to LEDs and Stealth Bulbs, clear corners. parts for the ground kit are on the way, couldn't find yellow wire locally, and i went with Stinger's doubleground posts to make a pretty daisy chain. about to get my fiberglass box made as soon as the guy building it is done the project he's on. it's getting paint matched to the car. the ECU upgrade is on hold because i might be prototyping one. i put in a high flow intake because there's no reason to drop the money for a regular intake due to lack of gains. i will be getting the HKS when i start showing though, just for the looks. waiting for cortc to put out his titanium light weight pulleys. want to order the MS flywheel, but my clutch is giving me problems at the moment so i may just do a SR swap with fly wheel and ACT Extreme clutch, if it goes out. since i just got down from AK i've been waiting to get here to start upgrades. but now it's on like Donkey Kong!
umpuck 09-30-2004, 08:40 PM Are you close to virginia beach? ill like to meet up...so far i got the ms urethane kit my bodyshop did a great job and some other stuff im thinkin about
art
markris77 09-30-2004, 09:49 PM yeah, i'm over in Newport News. Nobody has really responded about meeting up, just a few. And since then i've been in contact with a car club here in the area and they seem just like what i'm wanting from a club. if somebody wants to put together a meet, and my schedule permits...i'm all for it. but i'm not going to put anything together, not enough interest in the area it seems.

umpuck (hey that's u!!!)
Markris77 (and that's me!!!)
This was the only people interested list. anyway...next weekend is the Petersburg show, then the weekend after is a show in northern NC. i'm rolling to both with this car club, but if anybody is going and is interested in caravaning, pm me. after that, i'll be free to meet up. i'll give u a holler when it comes to kit putting on time though!
Katchoo 10-04-2004, 08:04 PM Gad! CASEY MAZDA repair really is bad! And 'bad' is NOT the word I would normally use. Watch them when you go in for your 15K check up...they gouge you and do stuff not required by Mazda even though they say Mazda recommends it. I have filed a complaint with Mazda USA on this. The 15K is nothing more than a glorified oil change really...but CASEY adds on tons of stuff under the lie that those actions are in Mazda's 15K plan. I came away with a $247.28 bill.
The add-ons included an interior filter change (part $69.85 (normal list is $43.20 at an on-line Mazda place) - which is not called for until 25K miles per Mazda, rotate tires, clean fuel injectors (they couldn't actually do thus because they didn't have the adaptors) but they didn't charge me for this - but they wanted to. Adjust brakes - no, not part of the Mazda 15K. Adjust headlights - again, not part of the 15K
The MAZDA USA guy was laughing because it was funny that they were doing this. He agreed and helped file the complaint. These guys are crooks.
The whole 15K really should have cost about $50.00 for what they did...maybe $50, all they really should have done was the oil change and a few inspections.
Last one: They put 5W30 in the car...and then denied it even after the mechanic worte down that he put in 5W30. Incredible. When will people take responsibility for their actions?
markris77 10-05-2004, 02:56 PM Yeah, i took the car to them twice...no more my friend. the car is now sitting over at Hampton Mazda on Mercury. take u'r car over there and the service is litteraly the difference between nite and day. i got a call two or three times the first day it was in for updates. they didn't give me any warranty crap like Casey Mazda did. and i'm talking crap, not like i put on nitrous and expect my engine to get covered, example...i wanted to add in Red Line Water Wetter...they were telling me it might void my warranty because it's not Mazda Genuine...u gotta be f&*king kidding me...Water Wetter! anyway, these guys over at Mercury are the heat to work with, and it's pretty bad when i live 2mins from Casey and I go somewhere else. but i did here that f&*k Lenny got fired, and he was my main problem. i wonder if that pissy lil b!tch at the service desk got canned too. if you want any fire power against those guys give me a holler...and don't worry, i'll be more courteous and proffesional when dealing with Mazda, i just vent here, haha.
Jers8 10-09-2004, 08:31 AM Well, I've been taking mine to Hall Mazda. The Service Dept guys are pretty cool. However, when I picked up my car Thursday after dropping it off Wednesday night, it smelled like cigarette smoke. There was a cigarette butt on the floor of my car. The service manager said "maybe it got stuck to someone's shoe and that's how it got in the car". Well, I left the windows open on my way out to school at Oceana and I will say that I don't notice the smell anymore.
At 3000 miles I took my car over for the oil change, and the dip stick looked like they had over-filled the oil. Something else to not make such a big deal over. Rich mentioned to check my car out before I left the dealership and I'm glad I did.
However, when I originally bought the car in July, I wasn't impressed with how they cleaned the car. I had to have them clean it up a couple of times before I left.
After I thought I had a decent experience buying from Hall Mazda, I referred a friend and her daughter (she wanted to buy a RX-8). Her reaction was that she would never go back there again.
Katchoo 10-09-2004, 03:45 PM Well, my next try is going to be First Team Mazda. They are a lot closer to where I live. The problem seems to be there are not that many choices out there and we all are running out of them!
BTW...Casey Mazda's vehicle prep people are not very good either. One of my eariler postings deliniates all that I went through.
Katchoo 10-09-2004, 03:50 PM We need to have a get together sometime.
SkrEEeeEeeecH! Ka-BaM! <metalic tinkle>
markris77 10-09-2004, 07:50 PM Hampton Mazda on Mercury is where it's at! they just changed out my clutch for me, over nited the parts and had the car back in a couple of days. excellent service from them so far, a DRASTIC improvement from those f&*ks at Casey. The new clutch is the HEAT! its even better than when i drove the car off the lot. i can roast 1st to 2nd, and bark the hell out of 2nd to 3rd.
just got back from Xtreme Nationals and got a dyno run in. 186.3! the only upgrade i have is the APC Freeflow air filter. i didn't get to run it though, i got judged way late and they closed the track betime i pulled up, i wanted to get a 1/4 time slip. oh well.
Katchoo 10-10-2004, 05:44 PM Thanks for the info. I shall try First Team first...and if that doesn't work out I will be off to Hampton Mazda.
renelu 10-17-2004, 08:56 AM Thought I'd say hi to everyone - I picked up my blue MT RX-8 with the GT package on 1 Oct. I have a daily commute from VB to Yorktown, and my first 1200 mi have been a blast. I'm real happy I got this over the 6 (wife told me to get the 8!).
The only thing I regret is that I didn't get the Nav, since it looks like a lot of people are having fun with it in the Electronics forum. Less weight, anyway.
I bought mine from Hall, but I must admit I made it real easy (i.e. no hassle - I spent most of the time just chatting to the sales staff and service manager) I had financing in hand and knew which VIN I wanted to test and buy. Came in under the s-plan, and didn't feel I needed to fight for something cheaper. I also drove it for most of the afternoon to run errands while they wanted to get me better financing (they did). I did have to have them re-clean the engine compartment when we were doing the walkthrough/inspection, but I'll give their service dept a shot when I need it.
Neil
umpuck 10-17-2004, 10:22 PM Welcome!!
G-ReX 10-20-2004, 09:48 PM Katchoo, definitely let us know what you think. I bought my car at First Team, but the only experience with service so far was a drop off for the M-flash a few days after I got it. They were good with that one. The sales guys didn't know about the update but the service guy looked it up, said it hadn't been done and got it done that day. I'm just at 600 miles, so a ways to go.
Hammer 10-20-2004, 10:02 PM I posted another thread about this, but got no responses. Has anyone here had any experiences with Hall Mazda service dept?
WildOne 10-21-2004, 04:56 PM Hey Everyone. I'm in Norfolk. I have a Ti Grey 8 that I purchased in March from Hall. I have had great service from them (that is for you Hammer).
WildOne 10-21-2004, 05:00 PM If anyone gets together locally (Hampton Roads) add me in!! Always up for something fun! Feel free to email me or AIM me. I have lots of questions, but too afraid to ask.
edit 1/31/05 new email and aim: WildOneRX8@cox.net RX8WildOne (AIM)
N5TEV 10-21-2004, 06:30 PM Regarding Service in our area, I've had good experience with Casey Imports on Jefferson.
But reading some of the posts here, I may be the exception. Although me using them for my RX-7 for the last 14 years, and getting to personally know each of the 3 service writers they've employed during that time might have had some influence.
As far as the technicians go, Lenny was a straight RX-7 man, and did not attend any RX-8 school prior to his leaving. The new guy (John, I think) has been thru the coarse. And yes they've made a couple minor goofs on me since I got my RX-8 in January. But I've always been able to get some "consideration" in return from the current service rep (Perry) -- like a free labor on an mp3 install, courtesy oil changes, etc. Whatever the case, I've always been provided a decent loaner or rental car (though not an RX-8, LOL!). They also have offered up any replacement of parts (and flashes) covered by service bullitens that I might not yet have read up on myself. But that's just me, YMMV.

Any more updates on Hampton Roads service? Since I'm southside, I'm hoping someone's got some more positive info on Hall or 1st Team.

Any more updates on Hampton Roads service? Since I'm southside, I'm hoping someone's got some more positive info on Hall or 1st Team.
I have had mine to Hall 3 times, once for recall (M flash) and twice for oil change. I am a little undecided at this point. Always courtious. Their loaner cars are from a rental car place, I really hated that because you have to wait for the rental service to pick you up and then fill out all their paperwork. It was time consuming and the loaner car sucked! If is free but not worth it as far as I could see. I complained and Hall let me turn the rental into them and they got it back to the rental place.
The second oil change they overfilled my oil and I did not Notice it for two fill ups of gas and it was still too full. That kind of scared me. They took care of it but I would have thought they would have known how much to put in it. 3.7 quarts is all it takes!
I called to get another 8 and haven't gotten a call back yet and it has been 2 weeks. I want a manual trans this time!
If you go, let me know what you find out. I have to take mine in for another oil change and a replacement on the center console lid. When I mentioned it they told me it was supposed to be like that and they took me to the showroom and showed me a new car, and it was like that too. I told them that mine was not like that when I bought it and the new showroom car must be broken also. But then I just dropped it.
They called me on my way home and told me that they were wrong and they looked at some other new cars in the back and they were not broken so they ordered me a new lid and I have to take it back to have it installed!
Hope this is helpful! Let me know how it turns out if you go to Hall!
G-ReX 12-26-2004, 02:54 PM Nice to hear they 'fessed up to the mistake. Clearly they didn't know the car enough up front, but to call you back is definite plus. Still, I'll probably start with First Team since I bought the car there and it's closer to work.
I can't believe they haven't called you back on a potential sale, though! They've got 7 MT's on the lot. Did you want to order one? The factory fire may have messed that up.
Been out in the snow?
Katchoo 12-27-2004, 08:12 AM I am trying First Team as we speak...but only their body shop (got rear-ended) and an update to the PCM (Casey installed a corrupted file and then couldn't fix it because they didn't have the 'old' M-flash on file - dumb bunnies!). Anyway, I did have an oil change at First Team a few months ago and that went off without a hitch. But would you expect an oil change to be a no-brainer? LOL
Anyway, I shall let you know about First Team later...

I decided not to go back to Casey....the RX-8 team lead that I was talking to just didn't understand and really refused to listen to what I was saying. We were just talking passed (past?) one another.
He pulled up a computer screen and told me that was the complete maintenance history of my car (2 PCMs done). I told him that was in error and could count on my fingers (I use those alot to count) the number of time it had been reflashed that I knew about (4). He went back and said nope...only 2. Then I went back and went nope...four UNLESS a couple of your service writers lied to me and said they did something but didn't. *crickets chirping*
Either they didn't enter all the flashes into the data-base or they lied to me. But the whole encounter was bad...we just didn't communicate and I drove 100 miles there and back for nothing - no resolution on any of my car's issues (I have a ton of issues of my own but that is another story). Oh...it turned out that the last visit I made there was about the same thing - they did nothing to fix any of the smaller problems and thus I sat around their lobby for 4 hours for nothing.
Just can't take that anymore...if I am going to get poor service then I might as well get poor service closer to home (First Team).
Jers8 12-28-2004, 09:07 AM Katchoo - nice to see i'm not the only Nordic Green in the area.
as for maintenance, Hall has made me nervous by over-filling my oil both times I went in for the oil change. the service guy seemed to think it was fine......ah, yeah. I'm also still waiting to have my front brake pads replaced from the squeeking noise.
G-ReX 12-29-2004, 12:12 AM Thanks for the posts. Did everyone with overfilled oil drain it or just burn it off?
I haven't seen a Nordic Green in real life yet so I'll be looking for you guys!
Jers8 12-29-2004, 08:36 AM Well, mine will be over at Hall Mazda tonight to have the brake pads replaced. I called them yesterday, and apparently they had a bunch of them in stock.
I can't wait since this will be the 1st time in about a week when I'll be at highway speeds, otherwise it's stop-and-go traffic from the house onto the base.....i feel like a kid with a new toy.
WildOne 12-29-2004, 11:41 PM Thanks for the posts. Did everyone with overfilled oil drain it or just burn it off?
I haven't seen a Nordic Green in real life yet so I'll be looking for you guys!
I took it back and had them correct it! First they said that they did a complete new oil change with a new filter and then the mechanic was looking at the console and he said that all he did was drain out the excess. Conflicting information!
WildOne 12-29-2004, 11:46 PM Nice to hear they 'fessed up to the mistake. Clearly they didn't know the car enough up front, but to call you back is definite plus. Still, I'll probably start with First Team since I bought the car there and it's closer to work.

Been out in the snow?
I want the same car I have or a 2005 but man tran instead of auto.
I have been in the snow both times that it snowed this year. I hated the salt that it left on my car. I hate to wash it when it is cold! brrrrr :p
G-ReX 02-26-2005, 03:33 PM Did the basic oil change at First Team today and no problems. Since this was the first time and I've read the horror stories of the stuck-on factory filters, I let the dealership do it. I picked up a filter and gasket for the next go round at home.
It took them 40-45 minutes (and they weren't busy), but no smudge marks, put 4 quarts of 5-20 Castrol and everything back in place. Oil level right at the top line. Service manager was really friendly & reminded me that they usually have a line starting at 7:30 AM for the 8 o'clock start & advised an early show (if I do it again) or the wait can go for hours. I got there at 10:30 today; up late last night!
Thumbs up!
