View Full Version : Whining on deceleration...
Fathead_03 01-10-2009, 05:10 AM I've noticed this lately. When I decelerate from about 60mph down to about 20mph, I get a slight whirring/whining sound. It sounds like the car slowing down after a dyno pull. Now I have tried it in gear, out of gear, clutch in, clutch out, etc, and it doesn't make a difference. Its directly related to wheel speed. Now my rear tires are VERY bald, almost to the cords, my new tires are getting put on tomorrow, and I am pretty sure this will take care of it, but I was just checking in-case it doesn't.
Charles R. Hill 01-10-2009, 05:12 AM Check your diff fluid level, too.
After that, perhaps rear bearings or rear CVs.
DeViLbOi 01-10-2009, 07:09 AM How many miles since you did tranny and diff fluids?
04RX8man 01-10-2009, 07:51 AM I have that sound also... I believe changing the tires will make a great difference....also many other have complained about this and have found that mazda says it's normal...get the tires changed and then report back and see if it has changed any and we all can try and narrow it down from there!

Fathead_03 01-10-2009, 01:56 PM The car has 58k on it. I'm pretty sure its tires. I'm going to change them out here in a few hours. Ill let you know if that fixes it. If not, fluids here I come!(planned on doings fluids at 60k anyway)
DeViLbOi 01-10-2009, 02:40 PM If I remember correctly you are supposed to do fluids at every 30 - 50K
Fathead_03 01-10-2009, 08:52 PM Well I got the new tires on. Whine is still there. Its quite faint, yet there. I may pick up diff fluid and do that tomorrow. I have a feeling this might be because I drift...

Socket7 01-12-2009, 01:10 PM I get a noise kind of like that that i can hear coming from the gearshift.
I just had fluids done recently. So it's normal, especially if you have a short shifter and have removed the sound dampening insulation around the shifter boot.

I agree, sounds like it might be your LSD taking it. Or your gear mesh could be out of alignment. Have u hit any curbs with your rear wheels lately?
staticlag 01-12-2009, 01:52 PM If you drift a lot I would try a heavier diff oil, 75w140. Or redline shockproof
05rx8mazda 01-12-2009, 01:56 PM MINE HAS MADE THIS NOISE since i had the car.. i actually like it. it sounds jet like whine haha well at least to me.
but really you need to change that diff fluid

...the only whine i remember coming off yours if from your engine, which was the same as mine when i had my midpipe on
kersh4w 01-12-2009, 03:24 PM redline 75w140NS is what sipe (teamrx8) recommends.
i run redline mt90 (75w90) because im not as hard on trannys as he is. if you drift, you might want to check into the redline 75w140NS.
04RX8man 01-12-2009, 05:47 PM yeah if it's still there but faint change the diff fluid and tranny fluid and sould take care of it
zoom44 01-12-2009, 05:54 PM ok ive waited 2 days to post this....

zoom44 01-12-2009, 05:55 PM or....
let her out of the trunk? :D:
Fathead_03 01-13-2009, 01:29 AM She does fit in my trunk!
Update - Put Redline MTL in my trans, and Redline 75/90 in the rear end today, as well as changed the oil. The whine is more faint, but its slightly still there. I think its probably normal. I may switch to a different heavier fluid next summer, but right now, I have hankook icebears on it, which are spendy, so no drifting for me. Does shift nice though!
