View Full Version : TSB on RX8's oil pan (early VINs only)
Rotor_Rev 12-10-2003, 05:36 PM While my car is in for problems with my intake I was notified today Mazda released a recall for my cars oil pan. Apparently there have been many complaints of a false check oil light. They asked if I wanted them to go ahead and order the part while my car was already in for service. Of course I said "HELL YES". LOL
I strongly urge everyone to contact their Mazda Dealership's service department and check the status of their particular 8.

markpmm 12-10-2003, 06:46 PM You have a recall letter?
Genom 12-10-2003, 07:11 PM This is not news guys. There's several stickys in this area of the forum that deal with A: Service bulletins, and B: there's a separate (sticky as well) thread dealing with the oil pan replacement.

I have read the other threads. This is the first I've seen in which someone claims they were notified of a recall.
Genom 12-10-2003, 10:00 PM The very first post in the sticky thread says that the guy found out from the dealer that they changed the oil pan. It's not a recall actually. Thats why I pointed out the actual service bulletins and posts related to when it first came to light.

Read his post carefully. He did not state that he was notified BY Mazda, just that he was notified THAT Mazda released a recall. He is mistaken. As of this minute, there are NO recalls on the RX-8. There are, however, a few Technical Service Bulletins.
It seems many people are confusing these two terms.
khoney 12-11-2003, 06:58 PM You'll note that the fix is only allowed for cars whose owners have reported the related problem. My car falls within the affected VIN sequence, but I have never had the problem (low oil light) after 8000 miles.
Rotor_Rev 12-11-2003, 07:12 PM I did not report any problem with my oil light. I had my car in having the computer reprogramed. They notified me that they were not supposed to release my car without performing the neccessary replacement. All I suggested is people should contact their mazda dealership. Absolute worse case, you get a free oil change. Sounds like a winning situation all around.
This reprogam they performed has given me an unbelievable performance increase. Much more than the intake alone provided and no more stalling. I need to get her down for a dyno. I have to see exactly where she stands. I bet I picked up 15+ hp between the intake and reprogram. Maybe more :)

Not true. You can get the fix if you're in the right VIN range even if you don't report the problem. I am in that range, I've never gotten the warning light, and I'm getting the new oil pan next time I take the car in.
To repeat: There IS NO recall. There is a technical service bulletin to advice service departments of the issue, and they will rectify it on request of the affected owners. Please let's keep our terms straight; it's a huge difference.
ranger4277 12-12-2003, 02:11 PM Rotor_Rev,
What exactly did they do to your computer? Did they just reset the ECU or actually reflash it with a different program? Give us as much detail as you can. :)
Rotor_Rev 12-12-2003, 06:54 PM It has been flashed with a different program. I have a follow up monday for them to see how the new image is working.
8_wannabe 12-12-2003, 07:03 PM let us know and track your mileage carefully.
l_doggy 12-12-2003, 07:31 PM Rotor_rev, thanks for the new info. Your dealer sounds much more informed than mine (Cascade Mazda in Ohio). They didn't even know about any TSBs and I reported the oil light problem, CEL-misfire, flooding, gas mileage, etc. Since I don't drive my RX-8 much in the winter, I haven't pushed the issue yet, giving Mazda some time to address these issues.
Keep us informed as to what your dealer says and if the reprogram fixes any of these reported problems.
mikeb 12-13-2003, 01:33 AM just got my car back tonight with new oil pan
they even cleaned the car
tustin mazda that is
mikeb 12-16-2003, 06:30 PM just wondering if others had their pan replaced
I had mine replaced last friday
bobclevenger 12-16-2003, 06:58 PM Mine was replaced last Thursday (12-11-03)
strong bad 12-16-2003, 08:31 PM brought mine by today n they didn't have it..it's now on order..btw do you know what type of oil they changed into your 8s (dino/synth)?
sferrett 12-16-2003, 09:27 PM I got mine changed at the Hine in MV about 2 months ago when I got to 4k miles. I did have the intermittent oil light issue and it seems to have been resolved by the change (oil is currently 1/2 way between the marks at this moment)
Chrisbert 12-21-2003, 10:28 PM Taking mine in tomorrow. Hopefully they will have the parts. They ordered them last week.
rxtreme 12-21-2003, 10:29 PM Having mine done Tuesday
strong bad 12-22-2003, 11:44 PM Took mine to get it changed Monday (12/22) should get it back tomorrow... Got a Lancer for a loaner...
And yes, I'm another who's been informed by the dealer NEVER to use synth oil...due to the same explanation concerning the raised burning point and not burning clean etc...
Unrelated -- one of the managers said that if there will be an 05 RX-8, it's gotta be turbo charged...to keep up with competition. I don't know how much of that was his wishful thinking as much as it was accurate info...(shrug) Then he said something about the Miata's goin into the Mazdaspeed shop...so there'll be something nice comin out for those...
Doctorr 12-22-2003, 11:58 PM Mine was replaced today, took about an hour.
Meant to take the digital camera and take a 'before and after' inside the pan view, but then didn't even ask to take a look at the new/old pans. Guess I don't care after all...
