View Full Version : FINALLY! Chickenwafer's RX-8
chickenwafer 12-07-2008, 01:09 AM I've been meaning to do this for a while but I FINALLY got off my lazy ass and took some pictures.
I really wanted everything to be perfect, but I just decided to do it. I used my crappy Casio Exlim so image quality isn't the best, but I spent a while in PS touching them up.
All in all I'm pretty happy with how they came out.
Hope everyone likes em! (EDIT: Added quick interior shot!)

Whew! That's about it. I'm sure there's stuff I'm forgetting. I acutally remembered when uploading the photos I forgot to take any pics with the doors open! Opps. Next time for sure.
Overall right now I'm really happy with how the car drives, handles, and looks. It's semi-scary fast, handles on rails, and the looks are clean and subtly aggressive. I'm still not done yet, and thinking of moving the water/meth tank and pump to the trunk, new seats, water pump, AST, rad hoses, etc. It never ends!!
And yes, I know my catch can has no hoses hooked up to it! Hoses are on order!
I have to thank 8Club, Arizona Mazda Club (AZMC), and all my friends for helping me with my dream car. She's not done yet, but pretty much there!
Dave

Every single mod was perfectly chosen and you can tell you did your homework.
Now that the car is done how do you feel? Most of the time when there is nothing else to mod ppl get bored and part it out.
Easy_E1 12-07-2008, 05:18 AM About time you came out of the closet Dave. :uhh:
Rotr8 12-07-2008, 09:06 AM Nice moddin,,,, very well thought out without being over the top.... nice job

mysql 12-07-2008, 09:19 AM looks very clean. I like.
You'll have to give me some hints on how to clean up the battery lines. I relocated mine to the trunk, but I have all the OEM wires in the usual spot and it looks messy.

Race Roots 12-07-2008, 10:22 AM Looks Beautiful!
- Very Interesting how you have the TEIN Hood Dampers Mounted backwards, does it make it easier to close the hood for you?
- Ditch The rad tank and get an AST!
- How do you keep the Alternator so shiny? I love it!

3 mabe because its Photoshopped? , if he bumped the contrast up alittle you can pull that look off easily
StuttgartRX8 12-07-2008, 10:33 AM I wondered that also but he doesn't have the Teins installed they are the NRG's
MazdaManiac 12-07-2008, 11:49 AM "Brown Soil"?

Just messin' with ya Dave, car looks awesome
Haha, come on now!
BEAUTIFUL!... lol, Is the exhaust tip painted black by the way? kinda
looks like it.
Exhaust tip is burnt titanium, it's prolly just dirty, LOL
nice car. i think i'm just gonna buy the turbo from Jeff. do you not have to recirc the BOV with the COBB? i was under the impression it needed to be to work right together.
You should recuirc the BOV with any MAF based setup, but call me a ricer, I love the sound. And it only makes shotgun-style backfires.
looks very clean. I like.
You'll have to give me some hints on how to clean up the battery lines. I relocated mine to the trunk, but I have all the OEM wires in the usual spot and it looks messy.
No problem, man. I just stuck the battery connections under the front brace so they are hidden, and routed the main 1/0g power wire under the PCM case and hidden in loom. I hate seeing wires.
Looks Beautiful!
- Very Interesting how you have the TEIN Hood Dampers Mounted backwards, does it make it easier to close the hood for you?

- How do you keep the Alternator so shiny? I love it!
Not Tein, NRG dampers. I found that installing them like I did prevents the hood brackets some trying to swivel to the side as much.
Carbing AST, Blue silicone Samco hoses, and MazMart water pump are next on the list!
Powerball mini, works wonder for the Alt and other small places.
"Brown Soil"?
I don't get it.
Lookin good, CW!
Rofl, thanks buddy! Now lets schedule some dyno time, beotch!
looks great man!
Thanks! Told ya the parts would be put to good use! Thanks again for the hook up
Thanks to everyone else for the kind werds, I really appreciate it!!
Better pics including interior shots and video are in the werkz, hopefully soon!
nuke0907 12-07-2008, 07:06 PM can you get some more pics of the intake setup? more specifically what components you are using and how its routed into the bumper. i'm talking to CRH about fabricating my MAF tube.
05rex8 12-07-2008, 07:11 PM very clean setup. looks great.
chickenwafer 12-07-2008, 07:13 PM can you get some more pics of the intake setup? more specifically what components you are using and how its routed into the bumper. i'm talking to CRH about fabricating my MAF tube.
Yeah, I think I might have some pics. It's just a 3.5" ID Vibrant aluminum 90-degree pipe connected to the K&N First Gen intake pipe (Part that holds the MAF), with a silicone 3.5-3.5" coupler (nothing fancy, doesn't see any boost).
I had to oval-out the Vibrant 3.5" pipe because the BHR rad so huge it takes up some space in the pass-thru. I just wrapped the piece in a shop towel, put a brick on top of the pipe, and used a hammer to give it some good whacks. The brick applies weight to the pipe and keeps you from denting it.
On the other end of the Vibrant pipe is a 3.5"-3" reducing coupler connected to a 2" long 3"-3" aluminum straight pipe with a K&N Ru5111 air filter on the end. This was the only filter I could find that fit behind the bumper. My intercooler is too large and too far back to drop a filter behind it, like the AEM setup requires.
PM me if you have any more questions, Nuke
Also added a quick-n-dirty interior picture.
Rotary_Power 12-07-2008, 07:28 PM Amazing 8 bro!!!!
Fortunate Few 12-08-2008, 12:14 AM looks great!

chiketkd 12-08-2008, 09:24 AM Rofl, thanks buddy! Now lets schedule some dyno time, beotch!
Car looks looks great. What kind of power numbers do you expect with this kit? How much boost are you presently running?
Not really feeling it, it's an 8 so it's okay.
Yeah right, that thing is gorgeous, man. Beautiful ride. I salute you sir.
Race Roots 12-08-2008, 11:17 AM Cool! I was unaware that SAMCO made hoses for the RX-8....I only see they are made for the RX-7.
chickenwafer 12-08-2008, 12:16 PM pics are nice, Dave. They heed a bum to finish out the gettoness of them.
Thanks man! You can dress up next time!
Car looks looks great. What kind of power numbers do you expect with this kit? How much boost are you presently running?
Thanks. Looking at right around 300-rwhp with 9~9.5 psi (what I currently run on the street). I have tried 12psi and it's kinda scary fast, and makes it hard to watch gauges and the road.
I did 202-rwhp NA and my motor has amazing compression so I'm hoping to be a little above-average with the turbo as well.
rotary-x 12-13-2008, 03:44 PM looks great man.
Motomouse 12-13-2008, 07:48 PM I like it !!!
halimsteven 12-13-2008, 10:23 PM i like your car, simple but attracting ppl eye. i think you should fix the gauges on teh ash tray, i have problem with that it too, i can't get it straight, i dodn't know why
steven
Brettus 12-13-2008, 11:35 PM looks awesome - congratulations
Silver_Mazda09 12-14-2008, 04:02 AM very clean engine bay. I like.
Vegaz_Nightz 12-15-2008, 01:08 AM Very well put together i like it. I think the offset on the wheels is not that great, other than that i like it!! Are you sure those are sprint springs? Why is mikeluvs8's car so much lower and he has sprint springs? and he did not preload them!!
nuke0907 12-15-2008, 01:12 AM :banghead: why do people quote long posts?

Oh god forbid you gotta scroll down a little more! We have better things to worry about than taking a few seconds of our time to scroll down. First its Obama than this? C'mon people we need change!!! Pointless to question why people do the things they do.

It's inconsiderate to quote the original post and all of it's photos. We have already seen all of it, this is a misuse of the QUOTE function.

it all depends on how he has the koni shocks set

steven
No I actually like tilting the gauges, I set it so my warning at at 12 o'clock so if the needle sweeps past 12 I know to back off.
You can make them straight with a custom mounting bracket. The problem with the RB pod is the surface area inbetween the gauges is minimal, so traditional mounting brackets don't have enough surface to hold onto with another gauge next to it (Hope that made sense). You can make one giant bracket that connects to each gauge and hold them all, if you wish.
lepichichi 01-09-2009, 04:41 PM how much HP?????
gregs 01-09-2009, 05:00 PM is that rb water temp adapter thread to the temp sensor for the prosport gauges and is it hooked up to your heater hose?
Fathead_03 01-09-2009, 06:44 PM I LOST it when I read the plate. That is awesome. Clean car, very well put together!
DOMINION 01-09-2009, 07:16 PM ^Burn rubber. Yeah your car has come a long way man. Good stuff. BTW did you install StealthTL Turb???
09Factor 01-09-2009, 07:36 PM how much HP?????
not enough.
^Burn rubber.
Burns Oil methinks.
chickenwafer 01-09-2009, 08:24 PM how much HP?????
Still haven't dyno'ed, waiting to get on :( At 9psi I easily pull past STi's and Evos
is that rb water temp adapter thread to the temp sensor for the prosport gauges and is it hooked up to your heater hose?
Yes and yes. But after doing it that way, I wouldn't put the water temp sensor in the heater hose. I would rather use ProSport's radiator hose adapter and install it in the upper radiator hose. It's more work but more accurate.
^Burn rubber. Yeah your car has come a long way man. Good stuff. BTW did you install StealthTL Turb???
Haha, no man, it's Burns Oil! I catch some flak for it as some locals like to say Brown Soil LOL
DOMINION 01-09-2009, 08:50 PM LOL i dont see what the big deal is with burns soil to me its like burn rubber and the brown soil thing is just well,,, dis here bat country
MazdaRX8er 01-09-2009, 09:04 PM very clean very nice!
tiger2877 01-10-2009, 05:29 PM nice car...

I am thinking about getting Viper 5900 2-way paging LCD alarm for my RX-8. :P
alienRX8 01-10-2009, 06:29 PM Wow, I really like your car. One of my favorite 8s
FreshLettuce 01-10-2009, 07:33 PM AH. I'm almost positive I've seen you driving before on the 101. ah, I was in my mom's bmw, I couldn't help but stare at your cars for about 10 minutes

chickenwafer 01-16-2009, 01:42 AM Haha, yeah that does look good!
I need to get the MazMart water pump and new rad hoses, first tho.
gregs 01-16-2009, 01:43 AM what kind of radiator hoses are you planning on getting?
blackenedwings 01-16-2009, 01:19 PM This is a beautiful 8. Very clean with just enough aggressive tones coming from the hood and everything in the engine bay. I hope my car comes together as nicely, as its not quite as understated with my carbon fiber bits everywhere.
chickenwafer 01-16-2009, 05:36 PM what kind of radiator hoses are you planning on getting?
I was going to get the Agency Power hose kit but it only replaces two hoses.
Mysql showed me some Samco-style hoses on Ebay- it's all three hoses and only $75 plus shipping.
I have also thought about making some of my own, with silicone couplers, t-bolt clamps, and aluminum piping, but it would cost too much and isn't worth the hassle.
Chamberlin 02-04-2009, 10:45 AM Awesome Dave, you really have gone all out since the last time I saw it!
Sorry I never got up there to take pics yet.... your pics came out very nice though!
Joe
WantedTwo 02-15-2009, 06:22 AM That is the cleanest under hood job I've seen on an 8. When I get moved and settled in Phoenix you and I need to get together so I can check out your work more closely. Look at my build thread to see the beast that's coming to the desert!
chickenwafer 03-07-2009, 01:53 AM I figured I would give my a thread a good bump with my dyno (in case you haven't seen it)

Easy_E1 03-08-2009, 03:52 AM Once I get some cash for race gas and dyno time at UMS again....hello 16psi.

chickenwafer 03-08-2009, 10:05 PM You know a lot about that, don't you?? LOL

DOMINION 03-11-2009, 11:29 PM Looking sick Dave!!! what kind of gas are you going to get?
outinnowhere3193 05-26-2009, 08:13 PM chickenwafer I was just wondering...why did ya take the picture where you took it??? lol I mean if I was to take a picture where there is a black mark on the road it's have to be like a mile long black mark from my car lol. But anyways man nice looking car..very clean wish mine was that clean. I've cut to many corners to be that clean..money always seems to be an issue....oh and patience lol. But definable sweet
chickenwafer 05-27-2009, 06:06 PM Thanks man
I took my pics there because it was close to my house and it was a last minuet thing. That tire mark isn't from my car, LOL
outinnowhere3193 05-27-2009, 06:13 PM Yeah if that mark is from your car...I think everyones thought of getting a 8 would go away when they drove it. I mean you have a turbo..so just imagine if that was your mark what it would be like stock lol. Oh and yes we know it's not yours we have posi.

your hp drops off dramatically after 7000 - what is up with that ?
outinnowhere3193 07-10-2009, 12:19 PM could be were he let off the throttle....or like when I went to a dyno I was going to do a log each pull and get the results and then later adjust a few things once I sat down...and I was letting off the throttle at about 9200 rpm and the inter...said it was only like 8750 and the dyno was only showing like 7800. So I wouldn't really say he let off there..we all know our power is gaining till like 8500 or something. I'm guessing the dyno was off and not really accurate.
halimsteven 07-11-2009, 09:13 PM i think most of FI RX8 HP starts going down after 7500 rpm, isnt it? that's what i thought...but after 7K a big drop, he might let it off too early....
steven
09Factor 07-12-2009, 02:43 PM his 8 is so weaksauce...
I don't remember why the 7k let off. I was standing next to it during the dyno toasting a marshmallow.
It was either lean misfires or the AFR's were getting out of range.
IDR may chickenwafer will show up and tell us.
chickenwafer 08-04-2009, 05:41 PM Damn I missed all this banter! LOL
Power drops at 7K because we let off at 7K. It was the first time the car was on the dyno and I wanted to play it safe. Also why the boost didn't go up past 9psi.
I'm planning on going to a dyno in my new town soon, and maybe an E85 conversion.
NautyOne 09-06-2009, 02:17 AM Amazing 8.

Oh hells yeah. Do the Eth, but your tune seems fine. If anything, save it and build on another file cause ATm you have the highest torque dyno on the forums...
speaking of...why do you think that is?
chickenwafer 09-06-2009, 03:41 PM That's a good question man, I'm not positive. I talked to Kane about it and he thought it could be due to the way I improperly had my boost controller setup. Or it could have been something with my tune...still not positive.
I know someone has made more torque than me but they refuse to post it....
You weren't overboosting... so I think there is a good chance to hold a lot of that torque to redline once you get your meth and BC right.
outinnowhere3193 09-07-2009, 03:19 AM oh...my bad man... as soon as I get my transmission in and time.. I'll jump on the dyno..and post the higher torque lol
outinnowhere3193 09-07-2009, 03:21 AM I'm actually kinda wondering what my numbers will be.. I'm boosting to 14 on 93 octane. But I have the 3.9 gears in the rear..and they different gear ratio now with the transmission is going to change things at the wheels. Compared to those who still have the 4.44 gears that is lol
Saintly1979 10-15-2009, 07:31 PM Who did your work. Because no one here in Boise will even touch my Rotary so now i have to ship it out of state. any recomendations?
chickenwafer 10-15-2009, 07:38 PM Your engine blew?
If you need to ship it out look up BDC:

Brettus 01-21-2010, 01:39 PM hey Chicken - you'r car all fixed now ?
chickenwafer 01-21-2010, 03:21 PM Yeah she's currently sitting the garage waiting new wheels/tires (which just got here) and for the shitty Colorado weather to clear up.
I've done some work this winter tho; the aforementioned new wheels/tires, some new carbon parts, relocated the water/meth setup to the trunk, moved some shit under the hood, and possibly new gauges soon.
gregs 01-21-2010, 03:36 PM what wheel/tire setup did you get? im sure you will show some pics when its all done
chickenwafer 01-21-2010, 03:43 PM I'm hoping to keep it secret until I can post pics ;)
A few people know but hopefully they keep it under their hat, haha.
DarthRX8 01-21-2010, 03:48 PM Haven't seen you on CMZC in a while?
