View Full Version : How to lossen the steering wheel? Help
Hi so for my daily driving my steering wheel is awefully hard to use with one hand because it is soo stiff. Is there anyway you can free it up so it can be loosened? Thanks for the help guys. I looked at the manual and it didnt say anything.
Razz1 11-13-2008, 08:51 PM Maybe your connections are bad and you don't have power steering at all.
Do a search and you will find the connectors have been the problem on a lot of cars.
SiLVeRE8 11-13-2008, 11:36 PM are you sure its not because you dont have the strength to steer the steering wheel...? well anyways i actually like the steering being stiff because it feels like you are more incontrol of the car
kersh4w 11-13-2008, 11:48 PM if its too hard to turn you need to either:
1. start lifting 1lb dumbbells
2. take it into a dealership
Yeah im planning on maybe going into the dealership, and its not the weight thing im sure haha. i weigh around 160 so that shouldnt be a problem. Yeah like i like being stiff but this stiff is too bad. I cant even park wit 1 hand n this is for parallel
SiLVeRE8 11-14-2008, 04:51 AM then maybe theres a problem with you power steering then. well i have a suggestion for you before you bring it into the dealer... why not just see if there are anybody on this board which is near by you and ask them to see if you can try to steer their steering wheel and see if its same with yours or not.
Yeah good idea, im planning on going on one of the meets and hopefully a kind rx8 person will let me test their steering wheel haha.

get a saw and cut it out;)
but seriously when did this start?
Lol love your guy's jokes. But it started when i first got the car which was like 5 months ago. I just noticed now compared to other peoples car that my wheel is pretty darn stiff haha. -_- n my friends were always telling me to loosen it up but it wasnt in the manual.
zoom44 11-15-2008, 11:23 AM compared to other peoples rx-8s or other cars? you got it used?
Yeah i got this car used, compared to other peoples car mines like a lot stiffer.
Triperformance 11-15-2008, 03:52 PM Keep in mind you have electronic motor for power assist. if it takes more then normal effort you may want to run it up to the dealer and see what they think. I would go to a dealer and try a new cars steering feel also.....doesn't matter if the car isn't the same but the feel should be similar.
dannobre 11-15-2008, 03:59 PM Does your car have a light in the upper left side of your dash :) looks like a steering wheel??
Mazurfer 11-15-2008, 04:02 PM That's what I was thinking................if he has a problem with the connectors or whatever, it should pick it up and he should have the dash light on. If not, then he needs to go find another RX8 and drive it to see if it's just him. WTF?
04RX8man 11-15-2008, 05:44 PM yea we have electronic steering so check the cconnections but unless u know about electronic steering i would just take it to the dealer....if still under warranty just take it to the dealer now do not even check for anything tht is what warranty is for
I dont think i get a light on the upper left.

Do you guys mean that handling picture on the top left with "!"?
greg985 11-19-2008, 12:13 AM ^ummm yes haha
So does that mean that something is wrong with my power steering?
kersh4w 11-19-2008, 01:44 AM yes...
go to a dealership.
dannobre 11-19-2008, 01:48 AM If you're under warranty take it in..otherwise check the connectors under the coolant overflow bottle....they get corroded and the connection screws with the CAN bus signals......and the power steering quits working. It's usually the smaller connector
Oh so there is a problem if a "!" next to it comes on?

the little wheel shouldn't be there either. The fact that it's lit at all is an indication that you have a problem.
On a related note... driving cars without power steering can be a pain. Drove a friend's 7 with the power steering removed and was surprised at first because I didnt know that it had no power steering... went to turn the wheel like I would usually turn my wheel and it barely budged lol.
Oh gawd stupid mazda dealer didnt even fix that when they gave it to me. Yeah im planning on going to the dealer and asking wtf happened. Sorry for my language sort of mad haha -_-;;
GTConversion 11-19-2008, 05:47 PM You should be steering with two hands anyway. :)
416to212 11-19-2008, 06:04 PM I find it utterly hard to believe that some people don't care about operating a vehicle that has a warning lights on in the dash... Especially lights with an exclaimation point!
SiLVeRE8 11-19-2008, 08:25 PM bring it to another dealer

I tried that once... I enjoy getting out of first gear every now and then though :p:
nycgps 11-20-2008, 10:48 AM probably just the connector rotten.
dozer 11-20-2008, 11:10 AM yeah if you have the little light on, your connection is bad, remember we have electronic PS, that means no fluids and pumpss.........
one way to try n fix it, is by removin the airbox and the plate that holds it up...now on top of the radiator ( under the airbox ) is the PS connector, unplug and clean the 2 metal prongs that are in there, then put some anitseize cream on em and plug right in....
failure occurs cus sometimes moisture gets in there and corrodes the metal prongs, thus not giving you a good signal...
Or rotten brain. Why would you think that was normal, I hate lights on my dash that aren't supposed to be there.

+1 I hate when I have lights on my dash...I wish there wasnt a light to remind you that the driving lights were on
Yeah my friend said it might be the power steering fluid? Is there any ways to loosen up the wheel at all or do you have to get new sway bars?
dannobre 11-24-2008, 09:01 PM ^^ OMG..you are kidding right...April Fools?? :)

sway bars have nothing to do with it... wont fix your problem at all. Take it to someone who knows what to do, they will tell you exactly what's wrong.
