View Full Version : The RX-8 is the worlds easiest car to work on
shadycrew31 10-31-2008, 04:27 PM I had a 91 300zx and a 96 Celica before my 8..
the z was a PITA to do anything on. I mean anything even changing the oil was a bitch.
However with the 8 oh my everything is just to dam easy. Y'all don't even know how easy we have it. I'm still shocked that people bring their 8's in and pay people to work on them.
If anyone is in so cal and feels the need to pay someone to work on your car. Feel free to bring your car to my house and i can charge you the $85 an hour to work on it.
BTW this was a pointless post enjoy your weekend.
i agree. easy enough even for non-mechanics to fiddle around and learn more about it.
cheeto 10-31-2008, 05:06 PM except for the oil filter. and the top bolts on the bell housing
delhi 10-31-2008, 05:12 PM I find the boxer engines in Subarus are super easy to deal with.

Unless you have an 09 (woot) :p:
DukeDerox 10-31-2008, 05:27 PM lol, when I got my oil changed the first thing the guy said was "sorry it took so long, the oil filter was a pain"
superglue 10-31-2008, 05:35 PM It's not bad for a sports car. But I'm guessing the S2K is a total breeze to work on.
Renesis07 10-31-2008, 05:35 PM My secret is I put on a latex glove which gives me grip, then its easy. Screw trying to get a filter wrench back there!!!!

new oil filter location?

sure is.
DarkLord7854 10-31-2008, 05:37 PM new oil filter location?
Yes, much more accessible. :)

I guess that sounded wrong after re-reading it
dozer 10-31-2008, 05:50 PM i feel the same way
Socket7 10-31-2008, 05:59 PM I guess that sounded wrong after re-reading it
Yeah, but I'm totally going to try it the next time I've got to deal with dirty oil.
arghx7 10-31-2008, 06:26 PM try working on an FD...
kersh4w 11-01-2008, 12:30 PM ever worked on a honda?
now those cars are easy to work with. everything, and i mean everything, is right in front of you when you pop the hood.
rotarygreg 11-01-2008, 12:40 PM FDs are a nightmare. the 8s are pretty easy, and the filter isnt even that bad. if you have a filer cup for that size filter and a wabble extension or a universal joint extension its a breeze. the 8 isnt always a dream to work on though, headlight bulbs take a bit of work to get at. highbeems arent as big a deal as they would seem though. the leading spark plug on the front rotor isnt too bad, but its kind of a PITA the way the engine mount is. also, the oil cooler recall would be a breeze if there wasnt like 15 of those shitty brittle clips holding each inner fender liner in. takes you the better part of 30 mins to remove those damn things. lol. The car is really nice though, the brakes arent anything super special, so they are a piece of cake too. in my mind, this car is made for DIYers or mechanically inclided because it has its quirks, but its easy enough to work on that its not a big deal.

Sleepy-z 11-01-2008, 12:41 PM An oil change on a z32 is easy btw, and the 09 rx8's oil filter is loacted on the front right of the front engine cover, its relocated where the lower oil line goes on the older rx8s. And yeah the Z32 is otherwise the worst car to work on other then the oil change.

Hmmm....you must have a different model Honda than I do.
Mine needs to be jacked up to change the oil filter. Changing belts is an ordeal unless (so I've been told) you remove the inner fender. Timing belt has to be removed to get to the water pump.
If you want easy, try a Chevy 6 (or similar) from the 50s or 60s.

04RX8man 11-01-2008, 09:36 PM the oil filter is not that hard but i had to buy one of those cap type wrenches you put a 3/4in extension in and turn it its like 4 bucks from walmart makes life alot easier
Sonny 11-02-2008, 12:52 AM try working on an FD...

alz0rz 11-02-2008, 12:58 AM ^ thus the 70 vacuum hose pun was born.
Senna 11-02-2008, 01:32 AM ^^Rats nest? For me big hands are a drawback when trying to work on this thing.
Sonny, you regret selling your R1? I came close to selling mine and decided not to-glad I didn't.
Brettus 11-02-2008, 03:01 AM try fitting a greddy turbo to it and then get back to me ...
Sonny 11-02-2008, 09:15 AM Sonny, you regret selling your R1?
Yes...I totally regret it. That's ok...I'll get another one someday.

ILoveFI 11-02-2008, 09:04 PM You think the oil filter on the 8 is hard to get to?
I think its one of the best oil filters to change because the opening sits vertically so all the oil drains out of it. Try changing the oil on a 2JZ engine like the ones in Supras or the SC300. I did my friend's and literally took me forever because the damn filter wouldn't come off it was almost impossible getting it out of there and not to mention it held so much oil inside it because of the position it was in.
newguy 11-02-2008, 10:31 PM rx is a piece of cake worst 2 in automotive history are 1980s first gen Toyota MR2 and the V6 Pontiac Fieros, both rear engine cars that require like 3 long extensions and a filter cup. The MR2 if changed hot will drip on the exhaust and usually catch fire while it drains. My 1st summer job was at a jiffy lube in 1985:(
tajabaho1 11-02-2008, 10:39 PM obviously you never worked in an FC :)
I havnt had to mess around with mine yet but im glad to hear that its an easy car to work on. just peaking around had started to get me worried, because under the hood, spaces look tight, and everything is kinda piled on top of everything.
my last car (s2000) was probably the easiest car to work on, didnt have to jack the car up to do an oil change or nothing.
only thing that was a bitch was changing the clutch, and replacing convertible top. i never want to do that again.
ChainRotary 11-03-2008, 07:35 PM My mini was awful to work on. The filter was wedged where no human can get at it, and it was a cartridge type which was horrendous to seat properly and tighten without ripping gaskets (even the dealers rip the gasket roughly half the time), and everything else was super cramped too.
GaMEChld 11-03-2008, 07:45 PM I think rx8's filter is pretty easy. And if you actually have a filter wrench and a 12" waggle extension, it could not be easier.
mrinno 11-03-2008, 08:45 PM Arent all HONDAs easy to work on ?
