Yesterday my odometer gained a 6th digit and I'm still here to tell the tale. 100,000 miles and still zooming. I know I'm not the first and 5 years into first deliveries I'm sure there are many more out there.

Sound off 100k milers! Lets hear how things are going for your cars. We could give our basic stats and let others know how they can keep their Renesis spinning longer. Many many thanks to Expo1 and Mazmart for how much their thread helped us all !:icon_tup:

2004 MT Titanium Gray base model. Currently stock. Same stock engine, Same stock transmission. Same stock every major thing.
Bought and delivered in Feb 2004.

First time on the track (autocross) Summer 2004
On the dyno in the summers of 2004, 2005, and 2006
First and only ECU mod was the Canzoomer unit. Left it on until this year.
Have run catless the last two summers to keep the heat down, to keep some miles off the stock cat, and to keep the neighbors awake.
Switched to 10w40 (Havoline deposit shield) oil in February 08 at approximately 85k miles.
Began premixing 2-3 ounces of Idemitsu per fill up (13 gallons) in August 2007.
Began using Techron cleaner fall 2006 to stave off carbon death and intake failure.
Swore off cheap no-name gas in 2006 shortly after averting disaster by using copious amounts of Techron and shifting on the buzzer.

Problems overcome:
Third intake valve began to stick summer 2006. I really thought it was the end. Lots of cleaner and extended high revs cleared it out after about 3 tanks.
Trans developed 2nd and 4th gear grinds around 50k miles. Was worried it was going south. BG Synchroshift worked. No grinds now at 100k.
Summer 2007, water in rear tail light. Drilled a tiny drain hole out of sight. Problem solved.
Summer 2007, began bucking and stalling in high heat (90 degree plus) and dying at red lights in 100+. Solution: premix, self made heat sink from simple sheet aluminum for coils, rear hood propped up about a 1/4 inch, rear hood weather strip removed, un-plumbed the heater hose to the throttle body, and removed the cat. It worked! Summer only mod, I return it to stock for Fall-Winter-Spring.
Spring 2008... car died  After much fear, anxiety and 5 minutes with a timing light I found the problem. #1 ignition coil was toast. Replaced at 85k. Still using the other 3 original 100k mile coils! Will probably replace in the coming weeks for kicks and giggles.
Summer 2008, Headlights beginning to yellow. Used off-the-shelf rubbing compound to bring it back to clear.

Normal maintenance:
Oil changed (Havoline deposit shield) about every 4-5k miles. 5w20 first 85k miles. 10w40 last 15k miles.
Trans fluid changed 18k, 53k, 63k, 72k switched to BG Synchroshift II (much much smoother)
Rear diff fluid changed at 63k.
Coolant changed at 53k.
Replaced front brake rotors and pads at 69k miles with DBA slotted rotors and Hawk pads.
K&N air filter cleaned twice a year.
Tires: 3 sets of Kumho 245/40, currently on Pirelli PZero Nero's... Love the Pirellis!
Headlights replaced twice. GE Silverstars do not last!

Things learned:
We've got a great car! The Renesis is a hardy little engine, but you have to listen for subtle changes in sound and power, investigate and act before it's too late. There are some good dealers out there, but most will not anticipate problems for you and by the time something is really wrong, it's too late. Take charge of your own car and take care of it on your own. It will thank you for miles to come.:)

Two reasons: I've used it for decades with my older cars for better high mileage protection. ... and then this http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=138402&highlight=lets+look+at+expo1 Expo1's engine tear down thread was the kicker for me. I'm not going back to thinner oil.

I am going to hit 125,000 miles this week. since I had the Mazmart Rebuilt installed back around 112,000 there have been no major issues. I still have the original CAT and 6-speed. Other than the elective engine rebuild these are the non maintenance items I have dealt with since 100,000.

Had to replace the rear O2 Sensor @ 119,500
A/C needed a recharge @ 120,045
Broke a Ft sway bar bracket @ 121,000 (bracket had 80,000 on it).

first: congrats on the 100k miles!

rear hood propped up about a 1/4 inch, rear hood weather strip removed

but do you realize that this is a high pressure area and air will force itself INTO the engine bay and compete for space and flow with the air coming from the front??

you should reinstall the rear seal and lower the hood to stock position!

Yep. I do realize that. It will even suck in stray leaves when your moving. The RX8 gets enough airflow at speed. It's the only time the side vents actually work. Removing the rear weather stripping and propping the hood up a little only works when you are stuck in traffic... and I was stuck in traffic almost every day last August in 100+ heat when I really needed it. Hence, the further explaination in my original post that mine is a summer only mod.

My car had 117,800 miles on it before I did the MT swap. It was an early build 04 Automatic, lady owned until 110k, mostly highway miles commuting daily about 100 miles. Original engine, reman trans. Still started perfectly (albeit a little slowly after 2-3 seconds) idled without issue (mild vibration normal to these cars) and drove fine until I did the swap. I havent had time to tear the auto/4port core engine down yet to look inside.

2004, MT, 125,000 miles, southern Cal. NO ENGINE PROBLEMS.

2nd set of coils and spark plugs. All original equipment and no mods. Always used 5w20 and never pre-mixed. I almost always redline to burn out carbon deposits but, importantly, only after warming up cruising on the fwy for 15-20 min.

To summerize................She was told by a friend she needed a new motor. We took a look and got it running.............all is fine as of 2/23/09. It was severely flooded and had some other small issues along the way.

It's an 04 Auto with about 155k miles on it.

been using 5-20 oil from the beginning.
Used to run 87 octane gas but recently switched to 93.
Original coils, plugs and wires were replaced at 115,00.

Only problem I have had was the heat control unit died in 11/08 and was replaced under extended warranty.

Most of my driving is highway, never tracked, and still is a pleasure to drive.

I've got 154K miles on my 8. Very few problems. I'm experiencing intermittent stalling at traffic lights and will not start again for 45 minutes to an hour then starts right up. I've taken it to Mazda and they can't get it to act up. But I still love my car!

Well, I got about 145k out of my 2004 before I developed an internal coolant leak and swapped out a newer engine earlier this year. I'm still zooming at 153k miles now and grinning every time I hear the shift buzzer.

My 8 has been a great car, it has never flooded, never stalled on me, or never not started when I turned the key(except for a dead battery once).
I'm on my Original engine too... The car feels like it has a lot of life left to it. Still strong as ever. ;)
Sadly I'm trying to sell it though... I just need something with a little more room.
But there will definitely another 8 in my future as a second car. I definitely have to say this website is probably the reason my car is in the condition its in.
But the car is for sell if anyone is interested!

Sun visor is easy to fix, condensation/water in the tail lamp is common. Whatever you do, do not drill tiny holes. Search the DIY for these two.

I have a 2007 model and have just racked up 126,000km (I'm in Australia). I live 50km from the nearest city so I do mostly highway driving (>100km per day when I drive it). I got 85,000km from my original Bridgestone tyres. The only major part I have had to replace at this point is one rear shocky (hope I don't jinx myself). Love driving my '8.

almost 101k on mine, but I've only owned it since 97k. Clutch went out, and it was the original. That's all... so far. But practically everything on the car is stock and it's been well taken care of. So maybe i'll still be able to get some enjoyment out of it.

I have looked after mine with regular servicing and she is showing no signs of problems, so hopefully we will both make >200K like the guy in the 200,000 club! I must admit tho I was wondering how long these engines generally last before they need a rebuild. Reading the threads it seems like anything from 37K upwards. Seems we have both done fairly well so far.

I love the RX-8 so much, I practically drove it and lived in it everyday! Exactly a month after I bought it(26th of June), I've already added up to 5,500 miles. That was two years ago...

To answer your question:
The OEM warrantly is 8yr/100K miles on the engine core. (They can) perform a decarb and vacuum test to see if your engine is still in spec. It's also common to have to replace coils, plugs, and wires. You can do this yourself first if you're inclined. It's much cheaper than the dealer and they'll want to you replace them before they diagnose the engine.

Well, you have obviously figured out how to post replies. As for starting a new thread, dunno. I just found one that fitted my topic at the time and joined in.

RE servicing, I still just stick to the logbook recommended 10,000K service intervals. I haven't had any major problems so far although the local Mazda dealer tried to con me into replacing both rear shockies at 100,000K. I took it to a shockie specialist and they said nothing wrong with them at all.

I am at 128,000K now and going strong. Welcome to the club.

I keep up the same maintenance as before. The manual calls for replacing the fuel pump at 100k miles. Mine made it to 107k before dying. I replaced the ignition coils at about 100k miles as well. Other than that, just keep on changing the oil, trans, and rear diff. I replaced the serpentine belts at about 147k mile when I had to replace the engine due to an internal coolant leak. I’m at a 157,000 miles now and still get that silly grin when the shift buzzer sounds.

We don't get much snow here in Middle Tennessee, but what little we do is fun to drive in. I have driven my RX8 in a few inches of snow and it handled like the well balanced car that it is. I couldn't speak to the deeper snows they get up North. Tires would be your biggest concern as long as the snow wasn't deeper than the car's clearance.

Mac51
10-28-2011, 05:40 AM
Haha I live in the tropics so snow isn't something I have ever driven in. I can however advise that my '8 copes just fine with >33deg Celcius temps with >80% humidity. I need to keep the oil level topped up and sometimes if I have done a series of short trips the engine fan stays on after I park at the shopping centre, but then I do 50km on the highway to get home and that seems to cool the engine down sufficiently. The aircon works just fine.

I got 85,000km from the original tyres. Am now at 55,000km on replacement Michelins with more rubber left (expect about 65,000km or more from these).

My only gripe is a squeek in the central airbag cover on the steering wheel.

A couple of questions:

-What method are you using to clean the intake valves? Are you getting a code which indicates one is not opening or closing?

-I can see cleaning the spark plugs at regular intervals, but why are you replacing them every 5-10K miles? I replaced mine at 30K, and while they could have used some cleaning, the gaps were still within spec and they could have gone another 10-20K. Replacing iridium plugs every 5,000 miles seems like a huge waste of money, and I've never seen anyone recommend such a thing...

There different factors why your RX-8 may be having a hard time starting. Check the service record from the maintenances if they were provided to you by the person who sold you the car. Basic things to looks for: when were the spark plugs, ignition coils, plug wires, and/or battery replaced. Also, look if you have an updated starter. If those were recently (varies on how many miles, preferably less than 15,000) replaced and still have an issue. Take your car into the dealer before the 8 years/100,000 miles engine warranty expires. It would also help if you search this site for further informations mentioned above. Do that and this forum will be your friend.

The plug wires are fairly new. I planned on plugs n fuel sys clean I'm not sure if the starter has been replaced any idea how to check? I may just change the coils to be safe are they a dealer only part? The dealer that sold me the car didn't have much on the history

You're welcome. The key is to SEARCH, and there are DIYs in the forum for replacing both the 'starter (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=189410)' and 'ignition coils (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=168162)'. This is just me; since the car was bought from the dealer, I'd try to find out if it is still within that 8 Years/100,000 Miles Warranty (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=147287&highlight=price+compression+check) and if so, I would just bring it back for a compression check (take the 50/50 chance for the re-manufactured engine with a $180 bill). I'm sure by now, you have less than 500 Miles left to do all these before the warranty runs out.

I am usin seafoam through the gas tank and oil occasionally. When im doing it for the valves im going through the intake itself and then revving it fairly well. What code would it throw? Ive gotten misfire codes before but that was cause of bad wires and plugs and i havent gotten one in a while. I can feel a slight hesitation around 6200rpm, and cleanin it has been helping.

I know its overkill to change plugs that often lol its an OCD thing of mine i guess :P

Im just over 137k on my 06 shinka, original engine, only replaced coils @ 93k and plugs and wires every 10-15k and oil (conventional 5w-20) every 3k. I've had the car since 72k, previous owner only changed plugs wires and oil.

I've seen a few members list their coils lasting 50,000 and some changed after 75,000 miles. I had my ignition coils (well as the wires) in the car for six years and at 141,000 miles before changing it; plugs were replaced at least every 30,000 miles, until recently, now every 10-15,000 miles. Regular oil changest at 3-4,000 miles.

I just joined the 100K mile club yesterday!! WOOT! Mine is a 2004 tiGrey and I bought the car used at 16K miles. Since I bought the car, I have premixed my gas with full synthetic BelRay Si-7 two stroke. That is really the only special thing I do to my car. I do typical 3-4K mile oil changes. For the first 30K miles, I used 5-20, then switched to 5-30. No very large issues overall (knock on wood). I recently got my water pumped replaced, got a new radiator as there was a small lead and the expanded coolant reservoir.. The only real annoying thing is my tail lights that has the fish bowl problem. Need to get some good silicone adhesive. I took my car in for a compression test, and everything read normal!

well, here is a pic below.
