Depends on the sub and amp. I'm running a Kicker 12" L5 and a Kicker 750.1 Amp, with 4 gauge wiring off the stock battery and I haven't had any issues.

i would recommend a capacitor (5 farad) just to be on the safe side as u dont wanna burn ur alternator out

I have a capacitor and Ive burned through 2 batteries in the past 3 years, each one replaced under the battery 36 month warranty. l

I am on my second red top in a year. They really do not like being drained low. Get something else if you are going to draw it down. The first one died when the alternator took a hike.

But it is nice to have a 36 month warranty, and a new start date each time.

overkill much? You aren't going to stress your alternator any less with a huge cap. It still needs to produce the same amount of energy.

It's more a question of how long can a stock battery hold up being discharged by the stereo on a regular basis. If you don't listen to the radio with the engine off, and you're not running insane wattages your alternator can't keep up with, Theres no reason for the stock battery not to last a year or few.

When it starts getting hard to start the car, get a yellow top and be done with it. :)

I was speaking to the company that installed my system(Custom Sounds), and they said I wouldn't need a cap because it just stores up energy which gets used up in under 15 sec, so it's not even worth the extra effort.

You should be good. I've been running a LOC and two 1000 watt amps on 4 gauge wire off my stock battery for about a year now.

this is DaRotary apparently... his stupidity has no end it would seem.

edit: admittedly, this is a question that has some legitimacy, though it has been answered, I'm sure.

i had an infinity amp 1600a i think, and two 10s, and a cap running just fine on stock battery. the thing was capable of shaking the car apart.
