A nice BNR Stage 3 S5 turbo setup would be a really nice setup. Along with a microtech or PowerFC. You could be looking at some very respectible numbers with all the right supporting mods. Around 300-350whp easy on a very nice tune.

You'll miss the 9k rpm redline, but the torque makes up for it :P

thanks for taking an interest, so far my plans are to just finish the car, at the moment it will be a street car and maybe later when i get tired of trying to keep registration on it then i will convert into a track only car, i live in Aus and its not cheap to build a car here, it would have cost twice as much to build a 20b.

this is the cros member being designed and the upper inlet manifold has to be shifted 2 inches forward to clear the fire wall, a custom lower section needs to be fabricated.

As far as work and installation wise is there much of a difference between installing a 20b and a 13bt? I know the 20b has more power and I assume cost twice as much... ?

This is the swap I would really love to do. You can get good HP without boost and great HP with boost :)

installing a 20b is a much more complicated job and here in Aus literally costs twice as much. sorry for confusing with reference to 13bt, the t is just for turbo.
diference between turbo and NA is engine compression otherwise pretty much same motor. as you can see in one of the pics i am using a 13B from a Mazda/Eunos Cosmo which comes standard as a twin turbo engine. for this project i will be using a single turbo.

technically...

13b can be any 1.3L production rotary engine. They are all 13b, regardless of which year/version/aspiration.

13bt = 87-91 rx-7 FC turbo II engine, single turbo, 185-200hp (also put into some early cosmo cars)

13b-rew = 93-95 rx-7 FD twin turbo engine, 255hp

13b-re = JDM cosmo twin turbo engine, 235 (?) hp

13b-msp/renesis = rx-8 obviously

There were also several versions of 13b natural aspirated that were not produced with those codes. These were

89-91 rx-7 13b non turbo 6 port, 160hp
86-88 rx-7 13b non turbo 6 port, 145hp
84-85 rx-7 13b GSLSE 6 port, 135hp
As well as previous carbureted 13b engines in previous models that I am not sure of the hp ratings on, but they are scarce enough not to really matter any more.

Looks like the engine in question is a 13b-re with a 1st generation rx-7 front cover. I'm curious why you didn't just modify the intermediate and front irons to use the stock rx-8 motor mount system, which would probably be pretty easy to do?

A couple questions/issues:

1) How is the shifter going to fit in the stock location with the R-type manual transmission? I thought they were in different spots? Or are you using the FE tranny and drivetrain?

2) What are you using for a throttle cable?

3) Fuel system: are you running stainless lines through the whole car? How are you going to plumb in the return line to the tank?

4) Engine management: Are you building your own wiring harness? You pretty much have to, or seriously modify a series 5 Rx-7 harness and run a Power FC. You will need new SHIELDED wiring for the alternator and the crank angle sensor (or go for a Haltech Hall Effect sensor and delete the stock CAS). What EMS are you going with?

5) How are you going to make sure all the accessories work with the CANbus system? Cruise control will be difficult, but might be possible if you swap in all the parts from a series 5 turbo Rx-7. Are you planning on keeping A/C and power steering? It's going to be tricky with the P/S because I thought the Rx-8 uses an electric system and the 13B-RE of course uses the traditional pump and pulley. Clearly you will have no traction/stability control unless you have a standalone capable of it and switch to their wheelspin sensors etc. But you said this is going to be a track car so I guess you can toss most of that stuff out the window.

6) With the way you are mounting the 13B-RE, will there be enough clearance for a turbo manifold, external wastegate, and a decent size turbo? I hope you weren't planning to run the stock turbos, the HT-10's on the 13B-RE are significantly smaller than the HT-12's on the FD. You could run a series 5 hybrid turbo though as has been suggested. That would save on cost, but is it really worth it for only low 300's to the wheels? And are you keeping the RE exhaust sleeves or going with the FD sleeves?

ill try and answer most of them,
with regards to the engine bay all the holes and panels have been filled and welded which i did myself, prep work and painting was done by my mate.
The reason for mounting the engine with a first gen front cover is because it actually simplifies things to allow more room on each side of the engine for a turbo manifold with equal length runners, single turbo, as you can see my car is right hand drive so the steering colum is also in the way. the other side will also leave room for coils, alternator, ABS and what ever else i can fit there. the car will have registration and be fully engineered. rx8 6sp will be used for now untill i can afford something decent and the wiring harness will be modified to suit relevant changes and every thing else i.e steering and traction controll which im not fased by any way since i never used it in the first place.
A complete new fuel system will be fabricated and including all new lines and pumps. A mechanical throttle pedal will be instaled to cater for a cable actuated throttle. The ecu will be a microtech Lt10s, and the engine bay and car will stay winning blue for now.

:wavey: for any one still interested, sorry for no updates but i had to move house and have been renovating for the last 6 months. so any way in the mean time i got my new motor back and my kit has been installed and the car is now at the work shop where most of the work will now commence.

this is my new power plant ready to go in. it has been ported and completely rebuilt and with all new parts and has an 'Extreme Rotaries' 14mm studd kit.

Hi it has been a while but i guess it takes time when you yont actually have much.
the car is almost finished at the moment so i thought i would update with some pics. to make room and keep the engine bay tidy we have relocated all the ECU's and fuses into the cabin behind the dash board.

builds like this arent about how much money you can throw at something, its about taking your time and doing it right no matter how long it takes, guessing that the OP isnt even really concerned about tracking the cost since the thread is over a year old now, just comes down to fortunate resources and patience. Especially with all the little details and custom fab work.

^ That makes plenty sense. Cost over time should not be a concern. All that matters is when ever it is finished and everything has gone accordingly but that does not always happen. Builds can easily become sidetracked. At the end, it is worth it. Even one can give an idea of what a build like this one would cost but that could be way off. Everyone's setup will not be the same and of course can be similar but just as well, they can be different.

one again thank you all for the positive comments :Peace: at the moment the interior isnt all back in, the roof capsule and front /rear pillars are getting a retrim in black suede to match the rest of interior. once it all goes back in, the cabin will vurtually look standard :fingersx: almost.
Rotr8 and bhop your absolutelly right, although i have actuall kept a record of cost i generally keep it to myself as the amount is discusting, but over a length of time its not so bad...........kind of.

Australian delivered models only came with one oil cooler, once the car is running depending on temps, i will see if i need to upgrade the standard oil cooler to match the other side.

hey sorry for no updates in a while, the car has been at my mates shop for a couple of months now but hasnt been touched due to the christmas/ new year period and pure lazyness:suspect: totally out of my control but once the wiring and fuel system is complete and from what i can see it isnt far away. i guess it has taken a while because the harness had to be completelly remade from scratch as i didnt want any of the wiring visible and everything was relocated under the dash.

yes i have custom lines routing into and out of the factory oil cooler, we used Speed Flow fittings for this and the whole car.

my oil pan doesnt sit too low, the clearance is just above the crossmember so i am safe from any road damage, i used the oil pan from a first gen rx7 and it works fine, my engine sits in the exact same location as the renessis did, i had to make up a custom lower intake manifold for the inlet plenum and throttle body to clear the fire wall.

i have combined the front cover and oil pan from the 12A turbo, unfortunatelly the oil pan wont fit your car as you have a different front cover.

I have 4" all the way to just past the differential and then it splits into two 4" straight through mufflers before going to two 5" tips that were made form diesel truck tips (shortened 2" in length for fitment).

Here are some pics.

I also added a pic of a "exhaust noise control valve" that I can actuate from inside the car with a switch. It has 10 .25" holes on the face of the butterfly so the car breathes through there when it is closed. It seriously makes the car as quiet as stock, I am not kidding....no boost though...or power for that matter...not even 1psi...hehe

Ask and thou shall receive!...hehe...its at night though...hope the pic helps. The exhaust does not go directly under the diff, if you look at the pics arcs around the bottom of it...and yes it is about 1/2" from all adjacent objects in there to maximize clearance so make sure and put plenty of supports if you don't want to hear rattling. Its not clear in the pic but it has plenty of clearance, you will scuff the front lip before you scrape the exhaust if it is placed properly.

I have only scratched on the ground once and it was going about 70mph and there was a pronounced divet on the road and the car dipped but I have a feeling that even with any other aftermarket exhaust it wouldve done the same because it was a pretty big dip. Regardless, all it did was just rub a little on the Vband clamp, no damage.

No problemo :wink2: A complete new wiring harness has been constructed to allow for the relocation of the fuse box, ecu and ignition and all the wiring is hidden inside the quarter pannel and frame.
In order from left - ECU - Ignition - Fuse box - new wiring lume exeting the fire wall and hidden inside the pannel.

Perfect - I was looking for this pic. I'm thinking of routing my wire bundle like this on the new engine. I needed to know if it was a clear path. Is it clear on the under side of the fender also? No cutting required?

GOOD Luck with that..the OEM harness is way too short to route through there.....that is all aftermarket wiring harness...

I looked at this all weekend long. It looks doable. There is enough slack for the MAF and master cylinder I believe.

You would need to do a lot...the fuse box won't fit through any of the holes :) So you would have to remove all the wires...feed them and then re-assemble the fuse box...a daunting job...Plus there is almost no wiggle room..I have had them all apart and there is less than 1" slack on most of the big stuff...it has to cross the front and that harness is really tight

Not moving the fuse box, just the wire bundle. EDIT: OK, I see what you mean now... bummer.

Hi all, thanks again for all the good comments, it means alot when you have put so much into the car. its good to see the headaches paying off. still having dramas getting the car running though, hopefully i get the clutch issue sorted soon.
another problem im having is with the Davies Craig electric water pump, i think im getting an error with the temp sensor.
On a positive note i have my gauges, boost controller (still need to secure with double side tape) and exhaust cut out valve installed.

It has been a while since I have had a reason to post in my thread but I am now excited to say I have finally managed to get my car on the dyno. Ive included a couple of recent pics and the dyno sheet.

lol, I don't I just copied those from another forum. he build was not really documented and his photobucket account is empty.

Hey guys, thanks for all the love. I couldn’t believe how dumb I was when I emptied out my photobucket not realising that all my pics were linked:wallbash:, I was planning on redoing all my albums and haven’t got around to it. What I plan on doing is restoring all the photos on this thread but I will just upload them from my PC so they are there permanently. I did actually put the car on the internet for sale a while ago, this was during some tough times and I was really frustrated with it:cussing:. Believe me I have no intention of selling it now, this car is my baby for life. During the dyno tune we discovered a massive air leak between the upper and lower inlet manifold, this caused some problems for tuning so we stopped at 20psi, the plan for now is to test the car how it is and then fix the air leak for a 26psi tune. I will post back once I have replaced all the pics and hopefully have a nice vid to upload soon. Once again thanks for your support.

18x10 +35 with streched 235's. I probably should have gone with +25 so I think I might put spacers on. next tires I will be 255 or 265.
