View Full Version : A funny sound

I noticed the last couple days a rather peculiar sound coming from my 8 and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed it or if it's just something with the Rotary engine.

Any time I've put the car into reverse, when I next go to put it in first, there is a "Clack" just as I depress the clutch the full way. It doesn't happen until the very last moment before I depress the clutch fully, which is why I'm wondering if it's something with the way the rotary engages the transmission. It only happens if the gear was in reverse just before. Never happens when I'm coming off a stop sign or traffic light.

I usually reverse it into the garage and shut it off and it happens when I'm pulling out of the garage each day, so I started testing how and when it happens. As I said, only when it's been in reverse just previously.

Comments?

I have a loud metallic ka-chunk when putting my transmission (AT) in park. It is by far the loudest transmission noise I have ever heard. But you are right about doing it in a garage as it amplifies the sound!

I hear it when I put the transmission in Reverse and start backign up. I too have an A/T. I had figured it was just the torque convertor locking up and haven't seen anything chaffing anywhere.

Don't worry. It's just the ABS calibrating itself - it scared many of us at first but it's a part of normal operation. It's especially noticable on first startup.

There are a couple more threads in the forum talking about it.
