View Full Version : Where To Get My Esmeril W/ Int-x Tuned In Chicagoland Area?
JOLIET WANKEL 08-28-2008, 11:57 AM Hey everyone! Well, yesterday was the big day. I finally got my Esmeril turbo kit and Interceptor-X along with everything else needed (5 gauges, guage pods, greddy boost controller and Apexi turbo timer). I also have TurboXS headerback exhaust. I'm planning on attempting the entire install with a somewhat experienced Subaru friend of mine. I can't afford to have it shop-installed at the moment and I'd like to get the experience since I have time. I've been quoted between $1400 to $1600 for the install with the 5 gauges. Is this a competitve price? This is too much for me. Can anyone recommend me a good shop to have it tuned once it's installed? Maybe a place with turbo rotary experience preferably. I have also been quoted $400 on the tune. Is that a competitve price? That was from some place in Plainfield that apparently has only worked on ONE turbo RX-8.
Charles R. Hill 08-28-2008, 12:00 PM Performance Auto Werks (Is that who you spoke with? They did Louie's install and now know the Esmeril kit pretty well). Tell Dave that Charles and Jeff from BHR say "Hi" and he can call us if he needs any help with it. Great guys at PAW.
My own service charges are about $1,500 for the install and about $100 for each gauge but I also know the RX-8 inside and out on both mechanical and electrical systems. $400 on the tune seems in the ballpark.
alnielsen 08-28-2008, 12:05 PM Performance Auto Werks is in Plainfield. If it is the same place, it would have been importshowoff84's car they worked on. You can look up his posts. He has an Esmeril system also.

JOLIET WANKEL 08-28-2008, 12:05 PM thanks for the quick reply. will do.
Charles R. Hill 08-28-2008, 12:09 PM Make sure to re-read my post as I edited it.
JOLIET WANKEL 08-28-2008, 12:16 PM Charles, are you not in the Chicagoland area?

I bought importshowoff84's Esmeril turbo and everything else.

If you want to take a trip to MN I can tune your car for $250 and give you a good balance of street economy and safe power since you have our kit. You must have a wideband installed however. Let me know how this sounds to you.
Best regards,
Chris
JOLIET WANKEL 08-28-2008, 12:38 PM I'd love for you to tune my car. But would it be safe to drive 7 hours and over 400 miles to Minnesota with no tune even if I take it easy?
JOLIET WANKEL 08-28-2008, 12:41 PM I have a wideband air/fuel gauge

If importshowoff was dynoing the car it must have a usable tune. I am sure you can drive it up here, just make sure and control your right foot on the way up here :).
Chris
Charles R. Hill 08-28-2008, 01:05 PM I bet for the money it would cost to drive AND pay for the tune you could just be flown into Chicago to do the tune and it might even cost LESS, overall.;)
alnielsen 08-28-2008, 01:15 PM You would end up with someone that is more familiar with this turbo rotary that way.
A-spec tuning has been around awhile, try giving them a call: http://www.a-spectuning.com/contacts.htm
mdw1000 08-30-2008, 07:03 PM Yeah, A-spec has tuned a lot of rotaries. And I believe they are a microtech dealer, so they'd probably be very familiar with the IntX (since it is a microtech under the skin, and uses microtech software).
If you use A-spec, let us know how it goes. http://www.a-spectuning.com/
alnielsen 08-30-2008, 07:50 PM A-spec tuning has been around awhile, try giving them a call: http://www.a-spectuning.com/contacts.htmHistoricaly, A-Spec won't touch RX8's. They only wanted to work on FC's & FD's. You can try, but that may be a dead end.
That's a shame, they have a good reputation for the rx7s.
Well, drive a little further and there's Banzai Racing (http://www.banzai-racing.com/) or check out Steve Kan (http://www.kantuning.com/forum/index.php), who comes to the area every so often to tune.
Check out this link for info on the St. Louis meet: http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=767929
or call Steven Burkett at:http://www.tuxedoparkracing.com/contact.html
chickenwafer 08-31-2008, 03:12 PM If Kan is going to be in town, then I would hold out for him.

I talked to them briefly a year or two ago about installing a turbo on my 8. They seemed interested and were helpful.
BlueRenesis82 09-01-2008, 10:14 PM What are your plans for the car? (DD, auto-x, tracking, etc)
