it would probably look better wingless and without the stupid useless sunroof visor

i give it 2 thumbs down

Those are from RX8Strakes.com and they're called Vortex Generator Fins. http://www.rx8strakes.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=99

They are actually proven to work, surprisingly.

To bad their effect at freeway speeds is practically nothing.
There is a debate goin on over on the 7 forums about these.

They are great for a race car, but for commuting . . . . . . . .they are nothing more than ricer jewelry

I wish I couldve snapped a pic but I saw a Yellow 8 the other day with those stupid fender accents that come off the oldmobiles....you know the little oval chrome things that the swangas have....yes on a 8

That car in the pic is actually a member here, its a pretty good looking build minus the vortex generators.

I didn't notice a build..just stick-on stuff.

I'd seen it several times driving around - didn't notice the Vortext stuff till yesterday.

:)

I appreciate their enthusiasm - a lot. My kar still looks st0ck, going on 4 years later. ;)

im pretty sure they do work, but on a race car with a functional spoiler only.

This article is not about fins on an automotive application, but much/all of the science behind it still applies...

Common sense tells me that to even see minimal advantages under any conditions, the fins have to be placed fairly perfectly... you cant just go stick some fins on so they look straight and get the same current eddy effect.

Vortex generators
A wind turbine blade does not have the same aerodynamic efficiency along its entire length. Towards the root, thick airfoils are used to enable the blade to bear its own weight. The blade is circular at this end, to permit mounting on the turbine. These factors have a negative effect on the blade’s performance.

Vortex generators consist of a number of small fins that protrude over the interface that occurs when the wind moves over the surface. These fins are mounted opposite each other at a certain angle that causes counter-current eddies in the air flow.
Vortex generators result in the flow of air subsequently separating from the surface at a later point, i.e. at higher wind speeds. This delays the moment when the blades stall and thus lose their capacity to produce power – the lowest part of the blade is thus efficient during a greater part of the turbine’s production time.

Vortex generators can boost blade performance by up to 4–6

Vortex generators result in the flow of air subsequently separating from the surface at a later point, i.e. at higher wind speeds.

this is the part that matters. it keeps the air flow running on the surface of the car until it reaches the FUNCTIONAL rear wing spoiler, thus adding more downforce
