View Full Version : *OFFICIAL* GTA Dyno/Cobb Tune Day

rx8thunder
07-13-2008, 01:24 AM
Details:

DATE: Sept 13, 8:30am to 6:00pm (we will get everyone in, even if it goes past 6pm but we want to start at 8:30am SHARP).

PLACE: Splitfire Performance, Brampton, 220 Rutherford Rd South. Has room for lot's of space for many cars to hang out and quiet streets for runs

DYNO: In ground. Very new model with the latest software (224 Dyno Jet)

TUNER: MazdaManiac (http://www.mazdamaniac.com/cobb/accessport.htm) (Jeff) is flying in for the event. For those that do not know, Jeff is the leading "custom map maker" for Cobb AccessPort. (http://www.mazdamaniac.com/apinstall.htm) When he does a tuning session, your car goes on the dyno for 2or 3 runs while he dials it in with a custom map for your car. If you bought the Cobb AccessPort from him, you do not have to pay for his time to tune. If you did not purchase the Cobb from him and you want a tune, there will be an additional cost (work that out with Jeff directly).

TOTAL COSTS: The cost for the facility is $1000 and Jeff's travel costs will be about $1000. Jeff's travel costs will be firmed up as soon as the GI guys re-affirm their interest in the event. Jeff's costs will be divided equally between all of those getting a tune from him. Facility costs will be divided by all those getting a dyno that day. Only other thing is food and drinks. I would suggest we create a community pot for this.

GOALS: (1) Get 10 signed up for Dyno + Tune (2) Get 4 signed up for Dyno only

PROJECTED COSTS PER PERSON: If we hit our goals and Jeff's travel costs come in at $1000, costs per person break out as follows:

Dyno + tiune: $172
Dyno only: $72

UPDATE: All of the Dyno + Tune Spots are now spoken for. There are 2 Dyno only spots left.

For all those who have signed up, please send a $40 deposit to my Paypal account: sendtoscottrogers@msn.com. Of note: "sendto" is in fact part of my email address. This is the final step to confirming Jeff's participation -- will book flight and accommodation when all deposits received. Deposits help protect all of us from people backing out last minute. If you back out and someone takes your spot, you will get your money back. Please submit as soon as you can. Thanks !

It will be a great day!!!

I'd just like to add a comment about the AccessPort for those contemplating this or for those on the fence.

My experience with this can be characterized in general as very good.
Perhaps a bit more responsive to the throttle, particularly in the lower rpm range.
General improvement to fuel mileage, I would have bought it for this alone had I felt it was going to be this good. Who wouldn't like that with fuel prices where they are now or where they are going.

Generally I get around an extra 50-80 km per tankful. When I first got the car in 04, during the breaking period (under 4K rpm driving) I felt good if I could hit 400km to the low fuel light. After that is slowly worked it's way down to a maximum of 350km before the light....driving a bit more normally.
Since getting the AP, 400km's to the low fuel light is typical, this adds up to a free tankful every 5-6 weeks, I've seen as much as 460km to the low fuel light which would get me well over the 500km per tankful easily. I look forward to seeing what I can reach on a long distance all highway trip.

All that being said I've been trying to get to any one of the MazdaManiac's dyno tune meets since receiving mine, none have been this close, The nearest was the Chicago one but that would have cost about $1k to do, between Dyno, hotels, food and fuel costs on top of an 7+ hour drive each way, but I still debated about it.

All that said I look forward to seeing what a Dyno tune by MM will give me in addition to what I seen already on the off the shelf tunes.
Don't let the opportunity go by, who knows how long you will have to wait again for this of happen so close to home.

This is the first Canadian MM Dyno tune, lets make it one to remember.

^ Well said RotorWheee.

Just to add to your comment, another local member (WCS) made it out to the Chicago meet and had this to say in response to my question about whether the Cobb tune made a real difference...

"oh yeah... responsive and power all the way through the range... I would even hazard to say that I can feel more low end power..... but above 4.5k rpm it's quite noticable"

My own experience with the Cobb has been a very positive one. I find that everything is a lot smoother. And now that I have added a mid-pipe, I'm looking to push it even further with a more aggressive tune. Can't wait :)

I believe that RW is correct when he says that this is the first Canadian Dyno day. Let's show those Americans that we know how to do it right!!!

Sweet! I cant wait to see the Dyno charts :) what kind of gains are we looking at with just the Cobb AccessPort on a N/A 8?

From what I have read, you should get at least +10HP gain but this could be bumped further with a custom map. Here are a couple of quotes from the Cobb thread that I found interesting...

"Easy E beat me to the punch regarding the accessport. I am in the process of pulling some video of the operation of the AP to post up since I've seen nothing with the AP in action on the dyno.

MazdaManiac has my dyno results and I've left it up to him to post the results because he was the one supporting the dyno time and tuning. I will say that we performed a baseline tune and then used one of Mazdamaniac's generated maps that worked with my trims.

We ran an initial run with the stock programming, but the final OEM flash run we did as a baseline was more accurate to the car's true power.

Baseline run yielded approx 183 WHP. A pre-made tune yielded approx 194 to 195 WHP. This was at about 75 to 80 degrees F.

There's clearly room to go because there's additional specialized tuning that could be done on the car to yield more power. Still, for a pre-generated tune I was impressed. Mods on my car are the K&N Type 2, Cat back and test pipe, AP pulley, lightweight alternator and water pump pulleys.

This is certainly a device that NA people should look into. The ability to have your OMP kicked up a notch, adjust fan settings, kill CEL's and also the tuning is well worth the money. Ditch your CAT and you'll open up some opportunities for power."

"We dyno'ed three cars yesterday. Flashwing's, mine and MM's. I don't have any of the charts. MM will have to post those. But from what I saw with the Cobb AP is an infinite ability to tune your car. MM said he has over 500 maps already. And I can picture having 10 to 20 per car or more.

The main thing is every car is different. Be it the car, the mods, the weather the altitude. What Cobb has done is provided a way to tune your car perfectly for your conditions. You can adjust AFR's every 100 RPM's if you want. Same with engine timing. Watching that on the dyno graphs yesterday made me a believer in what a fantastic unit the AP really is."

Have you made arrangements Jeff? Are you heading back Sunday? Have you picked a place to stay?

Hopefully we'll all have time to harass you throughout the day about your upcoming projects (turbo kit) as well as pick your brain on various topics (ape living conditions in the Congo.)

Will you be around for dinner afterwards? We can all hit a restaurant. I don't think there's anything particularly awesome in Brampton but we can cruise to Dave & Busters or something.

Wats a sprint booster?

LED and Clear corner GB will be great yeah!

You can learn a bit out SprintBooster here (http://www.minimania.com/web/AddedFrom/Downloads/Item/SPR1034/InvDetail.cfm).

I "trialed" it for about 3 weeks, using it off an on to note differences. In the end, I decided to return it (30 day trial period from JRP). Despite my decision to return it, I think that some people will love its impact. It gives the sense that your car is faster and more responsive. I liked that part of it a lot. However, I found that there was tad too much of a negative impact on drive-ability on a day in and day out basis.

Removing the hyperbole from the equation, all it essentially does is alter the number of volts that are sent to the ECU as you press the gas down. Our cars provide to the ECU anywhere from 1 to 5 volts as I understand it. It's a gradual increase, directly related to how much you step on the pedal. The SB, alters this rate, so that you start at a higher voltage and move up the ramp faster.

It would be fun to see how different people react to it in their cars. I could probably convince JRP to loan us one or two for the day if you guys are interested.

In terms of the group by stuff, kinda hoping that Jay will step up on that given that he has already looked into it. Jay?

Jeff, will tuning, before I upgrade my Coils/plugs ruin the tune you do for me yeild the wrong tune after I get my upgraded coils and plugs?

I don't think I will be getting the coils/plug before you tune my car..

But I have gotten the 3.5" Mazsport CAI though, as I know the AP cannot tune without it.

MazdaManiac
07-20-2008, 04:05 AM
The tune wont change, but you will need a new version of it once you get the coils if you get the MazSport system.
It has a funky dwell timing that has to be compensated or you will have misfires at higher RPM.
It usually isn't a big deal.
If you are getting the BHR system, no adjustments are needed at all.

great to know...

I was planning getting the BHR system anways.....

Thanks

also....would I be able to flash my AP on to the car with the "STOCK" map to monitor my AFR now, because I still have my Blue plugged in..

and my AP does NOT have your FI maps, only NA maps..

So either I am thinking flashing it with the "stock like map" from AP, and still let the piggy back do its work.
so atleast i can still monitor my AFR

Would that even work properly?

OR. I will uninstall my Blue, and you email me some FI maps.

Thief: congrats, you've been added!

Only one Tune+Dyno left! Don't miss out, get the last spot!!!!

Was speaking to MM about locking things down for the 13th meaning that he will book flight and accommodation, etc. I wanted his council on best approach given his experience. Here's what I suggest as a protection for all of us involved:

1. Fill one remaining "Tune + Dyno" position

2. Get a small deposit from everyone ($40). I wasn't going to ask for this because I am a trusting type. However, if someone does back out last minute, costs go up for everyone and I would feel really crappy about that as the organizer. If we have a waiting list and can fill the spot, a person's refund will be returned to them. Please send deposit to me via paypal: sendtoscottrogers@msn.com. Of note: "sendto" is in fact part of my email address. Please make sure that you include your member name in the paypal note to me.

Thanks very much guys and I look forward to locking everything down asap.

It was great to finally meet Jeff and he did a great job. Thanks to everyone for coming out, it was nice seeing so many new and familiar faces. Sorry you couldn't make it gecko, I hope your daughter is ok.

Special thanks to ShellDude who came to the event all the way from Philly! And get this, he has 5 kids and managed to talk his wife into him buying an 8 -- what a salesman!

Big thanks to the guys at Spitfire for staying so late. For those that don't know Spitfire, they are hard core enthusiasts making many of their own parts for turbo kits, etc... Great guys to work with on mods.

There was quite a range in numbers between all of the cars. Unfortunately for many of us, our cars were not able to measure torque, just HP. As far as HP goes, I believe the range was 138 to 204 for NA and as Scott highlighted above, 230 for Nitrous and 252 for Turbo. We had one automatic in the mix, recording the lowest amount of HP.

It was interesting with BrianGT's result that the Cobb increased his HP from 191 to 193 but grew his torque by about 7 pounds! In my case, Cobb added 13hp, FROM 191 TO 204! Over the next few days, hopefully everyone can post their results.

Thanks rx8thunder who organize this, and wcs to get us sandwiches, water, beer, and nitrous for laughing purposes...

The 06 Auto has 6speed auto and 6 port while the 04,05 auto's had 4speed auto and 4port? or did all auto's only had 4 port?

He was still running the emanage blue, we just had to disconnect it before installing the AP. I didn't actually cut any of the wires with my knife, just had to pry the cover tabs back a little to remove it.

My result was 193 HP & 137 ft/lbs, my setup is RB intake with duct, stock cat and MS dual exhaust. I was happy with those results, Jeff felt I could get about 10 HP more if I took off the cat.

I don't have the plot right now, Jeff is going to change it to a pdf and e-mail it to me soon. I'll post up what I get.

Quite happy with the results, No previously undiscovered issues. One thing I notice the last couple of days is the car starts up with no effort at all. It was never a problem before but now it's just a quick flip and it's going. I'll have to make a note to check the oil more often as that is something that was bumped up. Very enjoyable day good to put faces to user names, although I forget names almost as fast as I hear them until I use them a few times, name tags would be an idea for the next one:)

Just for the added fuel economy it's worth it, I've max out on a drive to Wiarton and back driving at around 80-110 kph...600km on one tank of gas, Low fuel light came on at 510kms. Don't know if it will ever happen again but I also never expected it to happen once. On top of that there's the smoothness, better feel to the acceleration, extended engine life........... What more do you need?

We I have to say I was shocked at what this "tuning device" cost and the results it provided. The results I saw it gained 4 RWHP for a cost of $800.00! Thats $200.00 per horsepower. I think the big HP gains on the Renesis engine will be in exhaust port work. I dont know who does this as of yet, but patience will probably save lots of money and result in major horespower gains. Just an opinion as usual!

I know I know but hey .... its the potential of the custom tuning that attracts me. Accessport works most when you get off the cat...as evidence by rx8thunder 13rwhp gain...but I am not sure about what contribute the most.

And I can monitor my R/L mileage, doing test runs, and have a smoother curve on acceleration,....ok, maybe I am still in denial :P

I will be tracking my mileage for the next 10 run religiously though.

Anyways...thanks...I shift at 4.5k nowadays and only got 20km worse mileage...dunno if its 'cause of the tune ... I will try my 3.7k shift again and see how it goes...

Sometimes. It depends on whether or not your current tune is even close to optimal.
Some people report gains and some lose MPG.

An RX-8 should get 320 - 370 km per tank. If you are already doing better than that, enjoy what you have.

Listen ppl
We really should start a new thread for this.

I am willing to start the thread and help co-ordinate Jeff's return.
I might, maybe even do get some tuning if I get new stuff (turbo)..... assuming my car is still functioning ..... I have been plague with some ... general complaints from my ECU and from the Emissions Technician.

What is everyone willing to pay?
Last time I think we had around 14 ppl and at a cost of 200 each or something.

$200 is fine with me.

I'd volunteer to help out more but I'm in Ottawa ;) Then again if you guys want to move it over to here I know it won't be a problem on my end :P

The only "if" on my end is making sure I get my BHR pipe before the dyno day which I'm pretty sure can be worked out.

I'd be interested, pretty much anywhere, Ontario, Quebec , Hell Michigan, Windsor . I was part of the last one in Toronto but I have since received a new engine and need to start over.
