View Full Version : Advise needed (From SG)
MaCaroZ 11-16-2003, 11:25 PM Firstly, hi to all the rx-8 owners living in Singapore. I've been admiring your car till I couldn't take it anymore and decided to get one. However, I've got some doubts & questions and hope that you guys can clear it once and for all and I'll be able to go book my car!
1) I've read this article in the news and forums all over saying about the power lost from the rx-8 for the Type S. Does this applies to the Rx-8(s) in SG as well? Because I most likely would be buying the car from a PI that already has the car and not indent and I'm pretty sure this would be the first few batches of Rx-8 that came in.
2) I'm very interested in getting the Pearl White (saw one on the road and it was stunning!) & I called many PI looking for this colour but none of them had it. Is this colour special that it's only available thru indent basis or just so happen that PI don't bring the white ones in?
3) I know that Mazda would be bringing in the Rx-8 early next year and would getting it from Mazda be a better option in terms of servicing and reliability?
Thanks for taking time to read and answer my questions!
Fab 8 11-17-2003, 01:14 AM Hi MaCaroZ, welcome!
Firstly, the power loss applies to the US cars, not the JDM ones that we get from parallel importers. So not to worry, we still get the 250ps.
Pearl white is an optional extra. I think it costs a little bit more. Probably none in stock, so you will need to order specifically.
From what we can gather, Mazda Motors will likely bring in the UK or Aussie spec model, which has lower output (228 bhp?). Servicing wise and reliability, I have no complains so far. This was my first time buying from PI and its been a pretty good experience.
Daverx 11-17-2003, 03:09 AM hiya MaCaroZ
I totally agreed with Fab.......
U may wanna consider the colours or type u r getting.....
some colours maybe veli difficult to maintain.....dats the onli concern....other then dat........
nothing to be worried about....except driving one stunning n eye-catching vehicle on the road....
:P
MaCaroZ 11-17-2003, 06:09 AM Fab: 228bhp? isn't that lower than the US spec even (238bhp). If you don't mind me asking, which workshop has your PI allocated you or did you go find your own?
Daverx: I'm thinking of getting the red . Would that be too hard to maintain? As for the attention, I already got a taste of how is it as I'm driving a sports now too (yellow one for that matter).. Simply love seeing heads turn! hiaks:p Just kidding...
Fab 8 11-17-2003, 08:08 AM Yes, the UK version is lower powered.
I bought mine from Garage R, so they have their own workshop, and is a well known tuner. Official HKS agent too...
Red should be pretty ok for maintenance. Very nice colour under the sun.
So what yellow sports car are you driving at the moment?? :)
MaCaroZ 11-17-2003, 09:03 AM The PI I'm getting the car from is also using Garage R as the workshop! The lady boss really has good business :)
I've got a porsche boxster S...
btw Fab, is yours the green or the black? I can't really see from the small pic beside your nick. Yet to see a green one on the road thou
Mockngbrd 11-17-2003, 09:17 AM one of the members here (ringer i think)
has a pearl white.... very nice......
Boxster S? gosh....
Fab 8 11-17-2003, 09:22 AM Boxster S!! Yowsa! Nice one!! So is the 8 going to be your everyday car?
Mine is black. Haven't seen any green ones too.
rubix 11-17-2003, 09:59 AM does 8 cum wif white colour orginally ?
cause recently i surf some webby and dun seem to have white
orginally .
Mockngbrd 11-17-2003, 10:35 AM i think so
rubix 11-17-2003, 10:39 AM by the way does all 8 cum with sun roof?
Nope. But mine has :D. THink its 1-2K more as option.....

Sorry for asking so much question,
does this affect the insurance preium ?
how much are u all paying for the insurance ?
:D
Thanks
Mr Rabbit 11-17-2003, 07:51 PM Hi rubix.
Me not sure w/r anybody else knows. Last time me checked with sg mazda agent (last month), they said they MAY not bring rx in to sell... Apparently they have probs with negotiating price with Japan.
Me guess also tough cos by the time they do decide to sell (if at all), most fans would've bought one already!
So just get from PI - Garage R gets my vote! As for insurance, it appears that India may be the only ones willing to insure...
And whatever, however, enjoy u self!!!
Ringer 11-17-2003, 08:23 PM I bought my Pearl White from GarageR. Indented end-May delivered early-Sept. It's a small cost option on the options list. It's beautiful and easier to maintain than many think.
US, Europe and Aussie versions I believe are detuned to meet their country's emmission standards. Our PI JDMs are 250 PS. Enjoy!
-Ringer-
MaCaroZ 11-17-2003, 08:48 PM Fab: Most probably going to keep driving it for the first few months but I love the porsche too much to keep myself away for too long.. ;)
Ringer: Hey, how much more did you pay for the white one? In the hundreds or thousands? I saw it was only about YEN$14,000 more which works out to about S$60 and I couldn't really believe that.
rubix: sunroof option comes for around 3-4k depending on how much your can negociate it for with your PI. Insurance are not affected by sunroof. It's usually the driving experiance, age, and genre of car (power & model)

Thks for the info. I think Mazda Motors has missed the boat on the 8.
AIG and Income also insures the 8 as well, but not sure how the one from Income works as they kept telling me they don't insure sports cars.
Daverx 11-17-2003, 09:10 PM Possible too dat Mazda may not bring in the 8..... i oso check wif them months ago n was told not confirmed in importing the 8...
I think they r going for the Mazda 3.......heard the 3 oreadi in showroom n awaiting for inspection (or maybe inspected) ......thereafter going all out for the sale of the 3......rumours is this coming Dec....
(interior abit similiar to the 8)
Mr Rabbit 11-17-2003, 09:16 PM Not sure if it's publicity...
Heard that waiting list in Europe for 8 is growing longer to more than 6 months! There's speculation that this may extend to other countries too... Maybe us???
Best to buy fast...
Has anyone else heard this???
Daverx 11-17-2003, 09:18 PM i heard it too......prices may varies too becoz of the yen thing.....:p:(
M-ster 11-17-2003, 09:31 PM Mazda Singapore
I've heard that they are making noise to Mazda Japan, asking them to cut down/reduce the supply of the 8 to Singapore's PIs. They probably realize that the 8 will soon becomes a problem which the Z350's is facing now. When the Z350 came into Singapore, it was the PIs that brought them in first, and as a niche market's car it will only sell that much. And by the time when the Authorized Agent Tan Chong brought it in, it was too late, as most enthusiasts would have gotten the Z and left behide some bargain hunters which is not gonna bring in enough demands. Apparently they have shit loads of Z's laying around in the port. I'm think the 8, in Singapore's contact, is a niche market product as well. It will not sell by the truck loads. Thus not supprising if Mazda Agent here have decided not to bring them in. It will not be profitable for them, as they still have to invest a lot for training their mechanics to handle the rotary and even bring in equipments specially for the 8 which just doesn't make business sense!
Insurance
My experience is kind of different from what mentioned here. I used to have a Miata, no one wants to insure me except Income and I've heard from other owners (of Miata) as well. Anyway, I was quoted $2500 without NCB, where else, but Income.
Delivery
Sad day, it will delay by another month. I think the factory in Japan is rushing like a mad house trying to coupe with the demands of the one and only RX-8.
Daverx 11-17-2003, 09:37 PM Thanks M-ster for the info....
another hearsay, the Mazda Japan is having the MX turbo n oso the Mazda roadster...........(Mazda Japan website)
suddenly lotsa models fr Mazda....

I think the MX turbo are made for certain markets only, like in Australia, they already had a road going turbo. Now, this MX turbo could be for the US market, and they have some kind of MX Sport (miata) purely for their own market.
And as for the other rumours, just leave them as what they are - rumours.
MaCaroZ 11-17-2003, 11:05 PM Does anyone here owns the MazdaSpeed bodykit? I would like a rough estimate how much is it to bring in (factory sprayed).
M-ster: Is the start button any good or is it just an extra fun function to add-on to the car? Please advise. Thanks
Daverx 11-17-2003, 11:28 PM M-ster

There are already 2 owners on this forum have the MS bodykit. 1 on this (Asia) forum and the other in Gallery forum. The rear kit comes in CF. I think the rest come fully painted. Price not sure, but they ain't cheap. When you order your 8 from the dealer, you can custom it with MS kit.
As for the button, treat it as an accessory. Just for fun. I always has a thing for the start button, a lot of guys on this forum thinks it's silly, but, like I've said, treat it like any accessories like the strakes or rotary crests.
Fab 8 11-18-2003, 05:57 AM I believe the dealer will fit the Mazdaspeed kit locally, after the car is cleared through customs. Otherwise the OMV will be affected.
Hmmm, insurance. When i started out also faced many problems.
Firtsly, NTUC rejected then INDIA quote too high then a few others all rejected.
However, finally i got 1 with NTUC thru LOBANG. No NCB about 2k+. Cant reveal anything more. So good luck!
MS kit- i think one of the forum guy fiited his MS kit from Garage-R
The BOSS told me all in about 8K+. However, he may increase the labour coz he said the damn side skirts already took 3 hours to install.....measurements already 50% of that time...
CHEERS
Oh sorri for the dis-jointed replies.
Last i talked to ST was they qouted 6800$ w/o labour yet. So go hunt around and do your own research :D

8K:eek:
ST as in STpowered??
MaCaroZ 11-18-2003, 10:13 AM Can anyone advise what would be a reasaonble for the whole setup? (Including the spray painting of the rear if it comes in CF)
Also, any good workshop to recommend? (good workmanship and honest price)
With every msg I post in here, I can feel I'm inching nearer and nearer to the car. It's pretty exciting ;)

You might wanna leave the rear diffuser alone in CF, IMO it's quite nice.
Yea STpowered. If cant pay in full can use Diners Card 0% thingy.

Cheers Mate!
I don't think I need the bodykit that badly that I'll pay by installment (even if it's interest free), I think that's a little too extravagant.
errant 11-18-2003, 11:45 AM Have had a great experience from EZ Import who sold me the kit at 50% discount, comes fully sprayed from japan. Skirts do have a problem keeping in contact with the car so had to rebond again at TCL. Saw the other bro's RX there with the full MS kit..tit grey with tan interior . nice!
Wah 50% discount. This type of LOBANG must share wif the forum BRUDDERS la....hehe
rubix 11-19-2003, 07:47 AM hi all..
does the fuel comsumpstion of the 8 very heavy ?
needa frequent the patrol station~?
wanna culcalate the expenses and stuff .
Thanks
Fab 8 11-19-2003, 08:38 AM Consumption is acceptable for a sports car. I'm averaging between 7 to 7.5 km per litre (mainly city driving). Just don't ever expect to see the fuel consumption of a normal 1.3 litre car. :D
Me 8 getting about 450 wif 1/5 or 1/6 left ( FUel light onz already). Me drive city n TPEs most of d time :D Hope dat helps.
This is talking about normal driving changing at about 3-3.5K RPM with occasional uncontrollable 6-7K RPM @ 2nd gear.....What can i say? =_=)b
Yam Seng
Daverx 11-19-2003, 09:53 AM type of petol u guys pumping?

U lucky!!! Me getting only about 300 plus a little more before light comes on.
New buyers beware! Auto doesn't drink petrol; it guzzles & downs EVERY DAY. But FUN!!!
Me use V Power...
Mr Rabbit 11-19-2003, 08:37 PM BTW, does anyone have suggestion how to cut consumption/save fuel???
M-ster 11-19-2003, 08:44 PM Originally posted by Mr Rabbit

Someone at the US side did mention that by turning off the DSC did affect the fuel consumption.
Mr Rabbit 11-19-2003, 09:11 PM Thanks M-ster. But is it safe???
Me had to jam brake on a rainy day on AYE; DSC lit up; me stopped in time - after RX slithered (like a snake). 2 cars in front & 3 cars behind didn't make it...
Was it the DSC that saved me from a spin?
M-ster 11-19-2003, 09:22 PM I guess you've got to bear in mind that turning off of the DSC is purely for a fuel saving tip. So, make sure you drive with more carefully when you turn off. And if you decided to drive a little faster or during raining days, you might wanna leave it back on.
Daverx 11-19-2003, 09:34 PM it juz another so called "safety tool" not full proof......still much depend on driver..........so still need to drive carefully.....
:P
Fab 8 11-19-2003, 09:54 PM Leave your DSC on for normal driving and definitely during wet days. I don't feel that it makes much difference in terms of fuel consumption.
Fuel saving tips...drive slower! Make sure you change up at abt 3000 rpm, don't do full throttle starts, maintain constant speed at 90kmh along expressways etc etc etc... in other words, don't have so much fun when driving the car! :D
Mr Rabbit 11-19-2003, 10:02 PM Thanks all! I think... :P
Try grounding. Make sure with people who knows exactly where to ground do the job. Not any kuching kurat.
My 8 or rather RX-8 needs 9 grounding wires to be complete. Dont just go buy a splitfire or HKS and think u r done. I am definitely seeing more mileage after i did my grounding. COST:$300
Mr Rabbit 11-20-2003, 03:58 AM Neon, where did u do your grounding?
And how long did it take? Thanks
Personally, i feel that audio people know more about grounding than others, naturally i did mine at one. PM u on where i did mine already. CHEERS
M-ster 11-20-2003, 09:56 AM 9 wires?! that's quite different to the Mazda's Grounding Kit for the 8. Any idea if the connecting points are of any different to the Mazda's (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?threadid=14728&perpage=15&highlight=grounding&pagenumber=1) which feature in the carzommer's thread?
Mr Rabbit 11-20-2003, 07:51 PM Thanks Neon!
Oh, didnt know there was a thread on grounding....
Hmm, looking at it mine definitely had more grounding points. If u look at the original ones Mazda did. Its the typical tiny puny stereo red black wire. GUess one of the guys sorta explain what grounding does already.
OK, i will try to take some pics of mine and post them.
CHEERS...
