I'm still new to the forum, so this question may have been answered, although I can't seem to find a definitive answer through searching.

Does the RX-8 share the same ECU with Ford (i.e, EEC V)? I was told that it does, but after reading through some posts, it doesn't appear that it does.

Ford uses a modified Intel 8052, I believe. It seems Mazda uses a SuperH (confirmed yet?) from the Sticky.

Anyway, I would appreciate any clarification if someone knows for sure.

And even if it is the 'same' ecu, the programming will be totally different.

I agree the programming would be different. However, some, if not the majority, of the interfaces may be standardized for cost purposes--assuming Mazda and Ford share any technology (which, I'm assuming they do).

There's a lot of work in decoding EEC V going on, it may help the effort here significantly.

Its a Mazda ECU, but Ford had their fingers in the design.

It's a Mazda ECU. It's a newer version as well. It talks CAN (ISO15765), and doesn't use any microchips on the common market.

It's supposedly using a 32-bit micro variant of the SH4, but That's just heresay.

If you do a search, you'll find a lot more. The maps are guaranteed to be encryped, and you won't crack that key without superb cryptographic help. IMHO, Reflashing a custom fuel map would be a much harder task than making a custom ECU replacement, just to make the encryption come out right, unless you work for Mazda Japan, and are the engineer who did the actual factory maps..

It depends on the encryption scheme. (Finally I can help with something) If we could get an encrypted copy of the maps and it used anything short of 128-bit, I could have it cracked in less than a week.
