I picked up an oil filter for my 8 at my Mazda dealer yesterday. The part number is:

B6Y1-14-302A

I was checking my filter wrench fit on the new filter and thought I'd check it on the filter that's installed on the car and I discovered that they're different sizes. The filter that's fitted on the car at the factory has a slightly smaller diameter, enough to cause my filter wrench to spin. So, I'm wondering if this is the correct replacement filter? Anyone fitted the Mazda filter and got the part number handy?

Yup, I read the oil change nightmare thread and yes I am getting free servicing, but that doesn't cover intermediate unscheduled oil changes which is what I'm doing.

That's the correct part number, they have just replaced it in production with a smaller one. Mazda is now selling a wrench that has BOTH sizes built into it. I have one and it's very handy (I have a stash of old filters along with some new ones - all the same part number).

Interesting! I just went down and tried my 14-year-old-once-used Miata filter wrench and sho'nuff, it's way too big for the original filter on the 8. It fits the replacement Mazda/Tennex filter perfectly.

Damn -- add a coupla grams of road hugging weight for a bigger filter after first oil change, and HTF am I gonna crack that glued-on original? Already tried turning it by hand -- ain't gonna happen. Great, another single use tool to buy. Thanks Rex, fer th' head's-up.

Thanks tpryor for confirming that this is the correct filter. Can you tell me what the size difference is between the two sizes in the Mazda combo wrench? I'm figuring that I can probably shim up the wrench I have for this one time special filter removal.

Foureagles, in this thread (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9604) 91vert talks about piercing the filter with a screwdriver to get the factory filter off. I'm hoping to avoid that approach though. I figure that if I can't get the filter turning with my shimmed wrench then I'll have the dealer change the filter for me.

Don't pierce the filter with a screwdriver unless it's an emergency.


Get a strap wrench (nylon that wraps around the filter) and work that to remove the stock filter.

Works great on bikes were you can barely get a finger in to touch the oil filter!

Filter uses an F-size wrench available at any Pep Boys. The one I got actually has two sizes built into it - one size is deeper into the wrench, and that's the one you use.

That's the one I got, too. The "F" size.

It was just a little loose on the stock filter, but if you put a bit of pressure on the top, it locks and takes it right off.

It fit perfectly with no pressure on the mobil one filter.
