View Full Version : Rx-01 Video Review
Buger 12-20-2002, 09:41 AM This is a bit old but someone posted a picture of the Rx-01 that got some comments in another thread. The beginning also has some rx-7 parts.

maikeru 12-20-2002, 10:28 AM Buger, you've don it again. You deserve some sort of award for this one.
Buger 12-20-2002, 11:21 AM Thanks Maikeru,
When I was in the boy scouts, I won a prize (see below):

 Ok that wasn't right. Sorry. :)
Car & Driver said of the Rx-01: "The total weight of this sleek little sportster is estimated at 2425 pounds, or 400 pounds lighter than the already feathery RX-7."
Road & Track said of the Rx-01: "The engine growls at low rpm, smoothly changing to a nice baritone in midrange and into a fantastic tenor at high speeds, more than 8500 rpm, at which it pumps out 220 bhp. Low- and mid-speed torque is quite good, culminating at 159 lb.-ft. at 6000 rpm".
Too bad the rx-01 never got the ok for production. Who here would buy a new rotary car with a renesis that weighed about 2500 lbs?
It is unfortunate that much of the public just looks at peak hp and peak torque figures before judging a car. There are a lot of people that compare the peak-torques of the Mazda6 (192) and the rx-8 (159). How many of these people are aware that the rx-8 has several hundred more ft-lbs of rear wheel torque than the Mazda6 while also being about 300 pounds lighter?
I entered a weight of 2450 lbs into the Rx-8 that I created in Cartest (same gearing etc) and it had an estimated 0-60 time of 4.99 seconds. It was speculated that the next rx-7 will be around 2600 lbs. Given 10mm wider rotors, a new 15b engine (actually 1471-1475cc) should have more than enough power to do the same. Who needs turbos?
Brian

I'm not nearly as technically oriented as you are Buger, but would this be because the 6 is FWD and the 8 RWD?
Buger 12-20-2002, 12:26 PM Hi jbebernes,
The torque difference to the wheels is because of the gearing of the 2 cars. The rx-8 engine will revolve more times for each revolution of the drive wheels than the Mazda6 engine. Cartest estimated approx to 2400 ft-lbs in first gear if the redline speed given by one of the articles was true. (see below)

The Mazda6 will probably have less drivetrain losses (%) since it is front wheel drive though. :)

Maybe just a little...
Actually, Buger is my biggest RX-8 Forum hero. Technically, he really knows his stuff yet he always explains things in a way even I can understand. Buger, if you're not a teacher of some sort you should be!
Still, couldn't resist a little jab!
Buger 12-20-2002, 01:26 PM :p I actually noticed the rear wheel thing when I read my sentence that jbebernes quoted. I could have edited my original post but the evidence was already quoted! Instead of addressing it, I hoped that nobody would notice. :)
Oh well, I think I knew what I meant to say. :)
Thanks for the compliment. :) The forum has helped me learn a lot of stuff and trying to write what I think I know helps me a bit more. I know that if I misunderstand anything, there will be people that correct me (hopefully).
I really should be studying to get more certifications from Cisco but the work stuff seems less interesting than rx-8 stuff. :(
KKMmaniac 12-20-2002, 11:30 PM I could barely find a picture of the RX-01 on line a couple weeks ago. (and had to do so while avoiding scrutiny of fellow employees) I don't know how Buger always comes through with the good stuff!
I remember reading about this car in Road & Track, and then reading how Ford shelved it. I'm glad they finally realized some of the ideas used in building this car were worth pursuing!

Cisco certs eh?
What certs do you have now? I'm looking to get into the networking field when I graduate (as a 2000 Server admin or something), and I need help in doing that. Since I don't have the hands-on experience I'd like to get the MCSE, I just need tips for resume building. Any help is apprecaited.. I'm pretty proficient with admining the server but I don't know the concepts they ask you about in the MCSE tests and others.
Let me know if you can help me man! :)

BryanH 12-21-2002, 02:52 PM That video is gold, Jerry, gold! I love the footage of the FCs doing crazy stuff. :)
This one's going in the keeper file. :)
Buger 12-21-2002, 05:45 PM Thanks guys, I first found it awhile ago and saved it locally. It brings a big smile to my face when I see new stuff like that too. :)
Herc,
I PM'd you about the work stuff.
Brian
Puppy1 12-22-2002, 10:11 AM I had never seen the RX-01 up close before. I loved that front sploiler. Then I noticed that the new NSX concept car (DN-X) has picked up on this idea.

Advice please?
BryanH 12-22-2002, 09:50 PM You probably need DIVX. Go to www.divx.com to download the codec.
WMP does support this format.

Hi DocR,
Your work must be spreading! Now I know I am bad for posting that picture but you are going to hell for creating it! :) Someone posted it on the rx7 forum (http://www.rx7club.com/forum/) awhile back and I saved it.
I guess the somethingawful people are called goons?
