Meant to post earlier but I woke up late and have been very busy most of the day. I just wanted to say that it was great meeting familiar and new faces as always. The turn out was great and it was a pleasure meeting Charles and Jeff again.

Razz,

Sorry to hear about your frustration. The Dyno did have a couple of corks however, aside from that it did serve it's purpose and provided the information necessary so that Jeff could fine tune the AP and help out the FI guys. Let's try to keep this civil and positive.

and yea, engine bay looking neat really low on my list of "to care", hey, it works and will probably outlast your car, so oh well :D

ps: you know its true since you has a turbo

You So. Cal 8 owners put on a nice party - a little long but a great turnout with some of the nicest guys and gals I've ever met. I will not mention any names cuz I'd be sure of leaving someone out but thank you for making me feel so welcome. I hope to make you feel as welcome when you come Vegas.

haha if lasting was an issue i wouldn't have gotten turbo to begin with. and no nitrous doesn't outlast a turbo. how it is maintained and driven is how long it will last.

while i was nitrous it was awesome. Ray told me not to spray until 4k.... i swear half the time on nitrous i used it at 1800-2200 at 65shot with racing beat race flash.

last of all if lasting long was an issue i wouldn't be trying to push it to 450whp in the near future. :spank:

Jorge(HorHay;)) is already working on another MM/CRH appearance and I would like to have a LOT of installs of my own to do. I can't let Jeff have ALL the glory!:lol2: We can line up some clutch/flywheel swaps, brake kits(pads and rotors), swaybars/suspensions, stuff like that..
Yup, stay tuned for something mid-june. I might even have some sway bars lying around for you to install.

Plus, Yoshiya, Jeff, and myself enjoyed each other and share a common desire to provide quality, detail-oriented, service and installation. You guys need to tell Yoshiya that I am right about his needing to raise his hourly rate. Honest people like him need our support and the best way to do that is to make sure he doesn't go out of business for having "given away the farm", as it were. Tip him when you can, too
^^^^ the absolute truth.
Glad you guys got along with Yoshiya, I know he really enjoyed having everyone around.

So, am I the only first batch AP user still running an original old school map now? I'm seeing Jeff and others post comments of different maps, and now there are dyno tunes to consider from your marathon session. Is it time for me to fly Jeff up here for a one day dyno tune for my setup now that is complete for NA?

\\Konig\\
04-29-2008, 10:28 AM
what exactly do you mean by old school maps?

i went on the dyno and was unable to find a better map than the one i originally got on the dyno with. it was the 1b_2a map that ive had for a really long time now.

also got the highest dyno numbers out of the NA manuals that were out there. most had cats though, i had a straight pipe.

My car is running fine on the intx. It has some quirks, and I could nit pick, but realistically my car is running fine. The wife was quite upset to say the least, but had more to do with the whole blown engine thing than anything else.... but as you guys with women know, sometimes a small spark (late night) starts a big fire.

I do not have the 1b_2a named maps. I only have the very first ones with the different naming conventions it seems. None of mine are like yours it seems, hence I'm "old school" now. LOL

Alright: Good News / Bad News time......

good news: I have the dyno files from Saturday
bad news: most of them were not saved properly.

For some reason most of us have all our dyno runes 'saved' but the files are all the SAME. ie; Jedi runs 1-6 are all 129.9. :dunno:

I guess there won't be a giant thread with dyno #'s after all. Besides, the real mission was to get most of the cars properly tuned and thanks to Jeff, that was taken care of.

I have a good friend who drives a blue 8 that may get a group room rate for a meet with the Cali crew. Let's see how many would be coming and when. If this is viable, set a date and lets see if we can make it happen. Vegas would not be that much further than Baker and a lot more to do.

My suggestion would be to pick a couple of dates so that my room contact has some flexibility. We could then get a rate package together and set the meet with drives and events. My contact will need the date of arrival, single or double room, date of departure (some may wish to come early and stay late)

I would also suggest that one person handle it on your end (Jedi seems an excellent choice).

Jeez! No dyno #s? That sucks major balls. I was looking forward to something at least...is this the final word on this?

Shesh, that was a lot of posts to read through. I have been intending to post sooner but had a So Cal Homebrew Festival to attend. Now I am finally sober enough to make sentances :Eyecrazy:

I find it a bit funny how the dyno must be screwed up because everyone got owned by an AT. Not to say that it is not possible it was having problems, but it seems that everyone is looking for a way to justify this not being possible.

First off, the numbers were 156, 160, 121. That means two of the pulls were higher than any non-FI car there. The next closest pull was 148 by Jedi on his best run. As Yoshi pointed out, on my last run the car was hotter than sh*t. I would also point out that several of the ATs and MTs had the same pattern where the last pull was significantly lower (also probablly due to overheating). The fact is, when the car gets hot, the HP goes down. That is the whole point behind a CAI.

I would attribute the HP difference to several things. The first one is that my car was the only '08 there. It is very possible that Mazda improved the performance on the engines due to all of the past complaints by owners. The second reason could very well be that the Mazda factory themselves performed the mods and tunes to my car (other than my rims). And last but not least would be that the car has 10k miles (so still tight) and was the first off the '08 production line so tolerances were probablly checked closely.

In any case, I think it is just AT envy. :banghead: Go return your MTs and get a better performing car :evil_laug

lol the auto was getting the same horsepower as a supercharged 8 and turboed 8s and thinks its correct...hmm...lol...

Well, here is the thing ... There were cars that ran before, and cars that ran after mine. Their numbers all looked consistent, yet somehow the machine managed to throw inconsistent numbers right when the only '08 gets on it? Does that really sound likely to you?

I do think that it was reading very low across the board but it seems a little far fetched to me to think that it only read normal for a single car.

Even Taj's car was performing around the same level as the others on the runs w/o nitro.

It is easy to discount the readings just because you don't understand why, but that does not make them wrong. Proportionately the numbers all looked consistent with the modifications that were done to them except mine. I guess the next dyno day will either confirm or deny.

Where is this coming from? I am not sure that anyone knows how low the dyno was reading. We could pull any arbitrary number to multiply. I never made any claim of what the real HP readings "should" have been. My point is simply that they were consistent across the board.

In all honesty I don't really even care if my HP was higher or lower than anyone else. I am only interested in understanding the readings so that I know if I have improved my car (and by how much) when I make changes in the future. lol @ Brettus

I liked the tag in someone else’s Sig ... the RX-8 is not the fastest car on the road, just the most fun. If having massive HP is the only goal, buy a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster. 641 HP stock and you won't have reliability issues :ylsuper:

But seriously, what difference does it make if someone has more HP than you? The question is, do you like your car? If so, great. If not, change it or buy a new one.

Jeff, can you explain the relative wheel speed to run time setting? I understand torque and HP. What I don't understand is how the dyno's are configured. The load they exert on the car should be constant but the wheel size would change the ratio of the dyno wheel to the car wheel. The transmission does not make the reading more or less accurate. That in itself would be irrelevant since the RWHP is a function of how much load is applied to how fast the car's wheel can change the speed (acceleration). It does not matter what is in between the engine and the wheel as far as RWHP is concerned. Obviously it does matter for the transfer efficiency but that is a whole different topic (that MT guys like to focus on).

Oh, and for the numbers the Turbo guys were posting ... they are fairly meaningless. The Turbos rely on the air force which is not constant when changing speeds. On the dyno the air flow is only whatever the external fan is blowing at. That fan speed/air pressure is not changing at all. This means they are not getting the real effect of the turbo in comparison to what it would when the car is actually driving. I would expect that every turbo would have had low numbers simply based on that fact unless there were really strong fans blowing that would emulate the same volume of air as if they were driving.

For Phil's SC I would not think that to be the same. I would really love to know what his numbers were. Guess I should not have waited at the BBQ.

Jedi54

I'm considering doing yet ANOTHER DynoDay this summer and I'm curious to see who would be interested.

the Dyno will be at a different location and will cost roughly the same. (give or take a few bucks)

If there's enough interest I will pick a date and negotiate a price for us...

MazdaManiac
05-17-2008, 11:09 AM
Jeff, can you explain the relative wheel speed to run time setting?

The dyno has to be set up to understand the effective gear ratio of the car being tested so that it knows the engine RPM from the drum speed.
It also is set to load the drums based on how long you want the run to be.
Since the dyno was expecting t lower gear ratio of a M/T 4th, it didn't load the drums as heavily fo the A/T 3rd and calculated the motor to be spinning way faster than it was.

Oh, and for the numbers the Turbo guys were posting ... they are fairly meaningless. The Turbos rely on the air force which is not constant when changing speeds. On the dyno the air flow is only whatever the external fan is blowing at. That fan speed/air pressure is not changing at all. I would expect that every turbo would have had low numbers simply based on that fact unless there were really strong fans blowing that would emulate the same volume of air as if they were driving.

Air Force?
Huh? Turbos make their own air pressure. They don't care if the car is moving.

BlueKnight
05-18-2008, 02:03 PM
Yep, that certainly does sound likely. And Jeff's explanation makes sense.

I do think it is a bit strange that they would want to use the engine's RPM to calculate RWHP since it would be way more accurate and consistent to use the actual Dyno wheel RPM to calculate it.

And Jeff, air force is probablly a bad term for me to use. I have heard that the air pressure generated from the car movement has an additional effect on turbos and that you can alter the dyno read of a turboed car by increasing or decreasing the air flow generated infront of the car. I do not know if that is true or not but assumed that as a possible reason that the turbos could have performed lower.

Jedi, I would be up for another dyno. All I wanted it for in the first place was to have a baseline to compare mods to. If my last one was flawed then I basically dynoed last time for nothing :-(

I am still interested in an AP if they add '08 support. Any chance of that happening before you come down?
