View Full Version : GB: One Touch Close Sunroof Module
Rotary Rasp 03-27-2008, 01:31 AM This little module installs directly above the sunroof switches and allows the sunroof to open and close with one touch.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/rx8rasp/One%20Touch%20Sunroof/closeup.jpg
The install takes less then 5 minutes and could easily be done by a trained monkey using ordinary tools. (screw driver and socket) Only 3 wires, two of them attach with a bolt and the third uses a wire tap.
The sunroof can still be opened or closed partially by pressing the opposite button once. Please note that the sunroof will stop if there is an obstruction, but only after somewhat considerable force. It also does not automatically reverse. For this reason, a liability waiver must be signed by anyone who wishes to buy one.
Here's how to install it:
Remove map light assembly.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/rx8rasp/One%20Touch%20Sunroof/DSCF0048.jpg
(1 minute)
Attach black ground wire with existing bolt.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/rx8rasp/One%20Touch%20Sunroof/DSCF0037.jpg
(1 minute)
Attach power wire and trigger wire. The power wire is the one with the slide connector already crimped on. Use a Philips screw driver to loosen the screw that hold the blue wire down. After you have it loose, slip in the orange wire with the pre-crimped connector and tighten the screw.
Slide the wire splice onto the red wire. Once that is done, slide the orange wire from the module into the splice. Notice that one side of the spice has two holes. This is the side the orange wire will be inserted. Once everything is in place, crimp the connector with pliers.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/rx8rasp/One%20Touch%20Sunroof/DSCF0036.jpg
(2 minutes)
Make it look neat and put the map light assembly back on the car.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/rx8rasp/One%20Touch%20Sunroof/DSCF0044.jpg
(1 minute)
Watch it work!

If your paypal account is linked to your checking account, then it's $40 (you would have had to enter a check routing number and bank number when you set up the account)
if your paying with visa or mastercard, then it's $43
Does that make sense?

Will the DIY for the sunroof to work after the power is off compliment this mod [EDIT: this mod being the one touch close circuit] or conflict with it? Because that is another gripe of mine. It would be AWESOME to not only have to hit the button once but to be able to do it when the key is off! Let us know, that DIY would be great!
Oh man, now I have to get our EE at work to make the auto-lights mod that RR did last year and my car will almost have all the "expected" features in it. All that's left is to find a way to make the auto climate control like the Euros have.
4 years to Supercharge 03-29-2008, 03:19 PM The mod just gives power to the sunroof for longer like the windows so it should play fine with this sunroof mod. ;)

Great find! I might have to try that DIY.
In regards to the windows. I briefly looked at the window circuit and it appears that this unit will not work for that. It's on my list of things to explore for the summer though....
And I've decided to put the link to the waiver in the thread. I'll also update the first post. If you want to email it to me, use gmail account please. If you need my address, for snail mail PM me.

tvtech3 03-31-2008, 11:55 AM Guys was this an option on these cars for the electric sunroof?
I got my 04 a week ago and it already goes back by itself automatically just like my windows will automatically go down with one quick click of the window down button, one quick touch of the sunroof button and let it go and it goes alll the way back (wide open) by itself
4 years to Supercharge 03-31-2008, 11:58 AM Goes back but does not close with one touch. ;)
raizen82 03-31-2008, 12:23 PM maybe RR should edit the title and change it to GB: One Touch Close Sunroof Module

raizen82 04-02-2008, 11:42 AM damn jedi powers...
Jedi54 04-02-2008, 11:44 AM they work every time. :D:
laythor 04-02-2008, 06:08 PM Just installed it. Took all of about 4 minutes. Another great mod by RR!
Jedi54 04-02-2008, 06:09 PM ^^^ and were any limbs injured during the installation of this mod? ;)
laythor 04-02-2008, 07:37 PM It was a bloodless install. I can take that console out in my sleep, just printed out the one picture that shows tapping the red wire and connecting to the point of the blue wire.
It's very nice to just push the button once, pull the e brake, grab my phone and shut off the car.
4 years to Supercharge 04-02-2008, 09:27 PM Very nice, I purchased the DEI 530T so that I can make the windows one touch and controlled with the alarm.
So when I install this sunroof mod, can it take a trigger from an alarm to close it?
Making it a true one touch for the car by locking and all the windows and sunroof close. :) Or open in the summer to let the hot air out.

i know the sunroof doesnt stay powered on like the windows after the key is off.....to operate the sunroof the key has to be in.....so im not sure if it could work unless you change the sunroof powersource....
laythor 04-03-2008, 01:22 AM 4 years has already posted a link on how to keep the sunroof powered after key is off.

Rotary Rasp 04-03-2008, 02:05 AM So when I install this sunroof mod, can it take a trigger from an alarm to close it?
Yes it can, you just a have to run one wire to the alarm module. Of course, this is only if the sunroof still has power.

Excellent shifting gears to do some electronics work.
Logic gates, brushing up and getting back so I can have some fun with my alarm, remote start install and other niceties.
Nopstnz8 04-03-2008, 10:08 AM 4 Years... Can you make a DIY thread when you finish this? Thanks.
Rotary Rasp... This GB for the sundroof module isn't ending soon is it? If so, I need to buy one. Otherwise I am probably going to wait a little longer before buying it.
raizen82 04-03-2008, 01:00 PM i still haven't figured out the powered sunroof DIY. i'm scared to cut the wrong P/B wire. how do you find out which one? i can't tell from looking at the pics and diagrams....

The correct pink / black is the one in the front closest to the rear passenger seat if the clip is still attached to the car.
The Green / yellow is the one in the opposite corner of the clip as the correct pink / black. I clipped the tape that had it held together, makes it much easier. :)
I didn't check to see what the other pink / black wire is for.

I will if needed but I think Rotary Rasp did a good job in the first post showing where the connections are for this one touch module.
The one thing he may have missed is where to press the clips on the map light assembly to release next to the lights.
I did it last night to hard wire my Valentine One. It is about an inch in from the back of the car on the sides of the map light assembly.
Go in a little bit horizontally with the screwdriver and then move the screwdriver tip toward the ceiling about a fourth of an inch. Then push the clip in toward the map light assembly while pulling down on the back of the assembly. Do one corner and then you should be able to shimmy the other corner out.
I think there may be directions in the manual as well but I don't remember them being as helpful... if you can make heads or tails of my long winded descriptive description. ;)
There is a DIY on how to remove the map light assembly.

I meant a DIY for this with an aftermarket alarm which opens the sunroof and windows by pushing unlock on the key fob like BMW's have.

Rotary Rasp 04-04-2008, 02:12 AM yes, I have 10 that are ready to ship.
raizen82 04-04-2008, 02:13 AM question, how considerable is considerable force that would stop the sunroof? mine doesn't seem to stop...
oh, and is it normal for it to have some sort of delay before the button works again? seems i have to wait 2-3 sec before the button responds again.
Rotary Rasp 04-04-2008, 02:17 AM Well, you can see from the second video I posted. I'm not exactly sure how much force it takes, but I wouldn't want to get my finger caught in it.

4 years to Supercharge 04-04-2008, 02:31 AM I meant a DIY for this with an aftermarket alarm which opens the sunroof and windows by pushing unlock on the key fob like BMW's have.
The keyless system would have to have an additional trigger to tell it to roll the windows down. I believe this works if they hold the unlock button down instead of just a press.
If you wanted it to do it all the time regardless of the situation then it could be done. Most people do not want to open their windows everytime they unlock their car though. :)
raizen82 04-04-2008, 02:33 AM ok, it stops. not a problem. as been said, only idiots would stick out something anyway. how bout the delayed button response?

Did you get the sunroof delayed power when key is off worked out?
Rotary Rasp 04-04-2008, 02:46 AM The circuit is a timer. You have to wait for it to time out before pressing any buttons. About 3 seconds.

I cant wait to get home and check the mail :)
xsnipersgox 04-05-2008, 07:06 PM got it, now to get it installed along with the extra power mod...
Zephyrzone 04-05-2008, 07:46 PM Thanks RR- I got mine a few days ago and installed it today. Works like a charm! I was so happy that I kept playing with it as we were driving. The GF was none to happy (she doesn't like my auto-fixation).
I've got a question (probably a stupid one). The tilt button works just like it should. The auto open button works just like it should, however the auto close actually requires me to press the tilt close button. My slide close button no longer functions. Is this how it's supposed to work or did I do the install wrong? I cut the red wire, put one end into the wire tap and the orange wire into the other end then crimped. The other end of the red wire is just hanging there (the end that goes to the buttons). Did I do this wrong? It seems odd that the slide close button is now non-functional.
Even if it is working properly, I love it. One touch and it closes. So much better than having to hold my finger there. I hate that. Awesome job, well worth the $$.
Rotary Rasp 04-05-2008, 07:53 PM you're not suppose to cut the red wire. That's why it's not working right.

Zephyrzone 04-05-2008, 08:06 PM Ok, then how would I "slide" the wire tap onto it. It didn't see a way for the tap to open in half? I had to cut the red wire or else there was no way to get the red wire into the wire tap.
xsnipersgox 04-05-2008, 08:14 PM 2 different holes =/
Rotary Rasp 04-05-2008, 08:20 PM lol, you are looking at the wrong end of the wire splice.

probably need to crimp the vampire clip tighter...
Zephyrzone 04-05-2008, 09:23 PM lol, you are looking at the wrong end of the wire splice.
Yeah. I figured it was something stupid and funny. :banghead:
But seriously, how do I get the wire tap OVER the red wire. The red wire is connected at both ends. The only way to get it into the tap is to cut the wire or split the tap in half. Does the tap "open up" or does the wires disconnect.
I know I know. A trained monkey is smarter than me.
Mazurfer 04-05-2008, 09:29 PM Or solder it if you can.
I don't use those wire taps and have about 25-30 in my collection now!
I solder and heat shrink everything!
Rotary Rasp 04-05-2008, 11:09 PM Soldering is always the best route. Once you have crimped the wire splice, it's pretty hard to open again. The red wire slides into the tap.
G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 04-05-2008, 11:33 PM Yeah. I figured it was something stupid and funny. :banghead:

Please stay away from me if we are stuck in a room about to diffuse a bomb... LOL
jk man- its pretty simple after you use them a few times. :D
Zephyrzone 04-06-2008, 02:02 AM OMG. You guys are just killing me here.
Ok, look, first off- awesome mod, even with the way I have it installed it's way better than factory. Great job Rodger and thanks.
Now will someone please tell the not so well trained monkey (me) how to SLIDE the wire tap onto the wire. The tap doesn't open. The wire is connected at both ends. I don't know how to put the tap onto the red wire without cutting it- IF I CAN'T GET THE TAP TO "OPEN" then how do I get the red wire into it???????
I'm not a total idiot, believe it or not. I have installed plenty of head units and done minor mod work to my vehicles. I also work in an industry that requires limited EE and ME knowledge. I use solder and good old electrical tape for everything. I can tell you EVERYTHING you've ever wanted to know about how a strain gauge works and it's sensitivities to thermal expansion. I simply can not figure out how to get the wire tap OVER the red wire without cutting the wire or cutting the wire tap in half. Any help? I have never used a wire tap, it seemed VERY simple- except it appeared that I had to cut the red wire to feed it into the open end of the tap. I don't know what else to say- was I supposed to pry the tap open first? Mine came packaged so both "halves" were already closed.
PS: Yes, you do not want me to diffuse a bomb. I'll blow some serious shit up.
chancejat 04-06-2008, 02:05 AM the vampire clamp should open up.....
Rotary Rasp 04-06-2008, 02:27 AM do you want me to send you some more splices?

I have never used a wire tap, it seemed VERY simple- except it appeared that I had to cut the red wire to feed it into the open end of the tap. I don't know what else to say- was I supposed to pry the tap open first? Mine came packaged so both "halves" were already closed.
PS: Yes, you do not want me to diffuse a bomb. I'll blow some serious shit up.
Zephyrzone 04-06-2008, 02:35 AM No need, but thanks for the offer. I can pick one up (Radio Shack I suppose?). I just need to know if it is supposed to "open" up then close around the wires?
Imagine this: I have a cable connected to the ceiling and floor of my garage. Can't be disconnected. I'm now supposed to put a piece of PVC pipe around it. What do I do? I either cut the cable or I cut the pipe in half then clamshell it around the cable. I can't "slide" it over the cable since the pipe has no opening and the cable is connected at both ends.
Please don't feel obligated, it's totally cool- but if you or anyone else has time to post a pic or two of the splice being attached to the wire (the initial instructions on page 1 show it already clamped) that would be helpful.
EDIT: I will try to post pics of my setup and what I'm working with tomorrow.
laythor 04-06-2008, 02:48 AM http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e364/mdobilas/Splice/splice.jpg
one side should be open on the whole length.. the red wire will go through there. the other side has only one end open, the wire from the module goes there.
Zephyrzone 04-06-2008, 03:08 AM awesome, thanks. I think mine is defective, I'll pick up a new one and redo it. I appreciate the help Laythor.
chancejat 04-06-2008, 10:40 AM just go to walmart in the automotive section......youll find what you need...
Zephyrzone 04-06-2008, 01:20 PM Yep. Just checked, mine has no "open side". It's sealed off. I feel al little less inept now. I'm going to Walmart tonight and will redo it next weekend. Cool.
laythor 04-06-2008, 01:46 PM sometimes the ends have some extra plastic flashing that can be pulled off or cut away with an exacto knife.

leaving for japan in the morning, so i will put it in when i return. thanks RR!!

Rotary Rasp 04-07-2008, 03:41 AM yes, i still have them
raizen82 04-07-2008, 03:59 AM ok, i looked over at my connection and it seems there was no problem in the crimp/splice. so, i made sure and took out the plastic covering and just connected the wires if it would work... nothing. can't think of any reason it would stop working suddenly... any way i can repair this RR?

4 years to Supercharge 04-07-2008, 01:52 PM Just received mine, going to install in a few minutes. :)
4 years to Supercharge 04-07-2008, 02:43 PM Installed, works good.
Side note: make sure and use the bolt that is shown for the ground in the install.
If you use the screw that the sunroof is grounded by the mod is noticably less responsive. ;)
I switched the ground point for my V1 away from that ground as well.
Rotary Rasp 04-07-2008, 03:32 PM take a picture and we can see wat u did.
Yea, It might help if you take a picture. Just to make sure everything is connected correctly.
I find it odd that it worked for a while. Exactly how long did it work for? Did it work correctly.
I test every unit 3 different times while building it. Then, I test it a 4th time before shipping. Thats not to say that it's not defective. Just like almost all electronics, the integrated circuit inside is static sensitive and should be handled with care. The rubber cover is designed thick enough to protect the circuit from most things.
Like I mentioned above, I'll gladly replace for you. But lets see a picture first so we can make sure it's not the wiring.

Yea, the screw that the sunroof uses as a ground has an unusually high resistance.
raizen82 04-07-2008, 03:44 PM well, it worked perfectly for a day and then after that i noticed it wouldn't close with one-touch anymore. here's the pic.

and then the black (ground?) wire attached to the bolt in the car where the maplight assembly goes to.
Rotary Rasp 04-07-2008, 03:58 PM Wow, the colors are sooo far off on your camera..... lol
Well, that looks right. The red wire is making contact to the orange fine?
Shoot me a PM with your address again.
raizen82 04-07-2008, 06:41 PM sorry. phone cam and it was dark, used the "flash" (more of a white LED flashlight >_>) from it hehe. yup, seems the crimp was fine. at first i was afraid i crimped it too hard that i might have cut through the wire. i ripped the plastic encasing of the wiretap and looked at the contact points and they were ok. will test it again and try soldering.

How about automatic headlights for your next project, or you could just do the clear corner GB and I would be all over that.

Not yet, but keep an eye on raizen82. (I kid, I kid)
I'm wondering with all the playing around he had to do with the wire clip, if the orange wire was cut in more than one place and now it's all the way through in one spot and therefore can't make connection to the other side(the red). Of course if he had a meter it would take about 2mS to see, but we can't help much from afar.
4 years to Supercharge 04-08-2008, 01:07 AM
My hand might be sore tomorrow.
I had to check how much pressure the sunroof applies when closing. Twice.
I don't recommend hitting the button with your neck in there!
It does not reverse it just stops after it squishes the crap out of whatever is in between. ;)

Rotary Rasp 04-08-2008, 04:01 AM Don't even bother. If you tried soldering the orange and red wires together and it still didn't work, then its defective. I'm going to ship you a new one. When you get it, just package the broken one up and ship it back to me. Send me you're address.

c'mon peeps!
Zephyrzone 04-13-2008, 11:11 PM My wiretap was mismade so I installed my wrong. The slide close doesn't work, I have to use the tilt close instead. But you know what? It's still VERY awesome, so much better than stock. I'm going to fix it this weekend, but I'm in no rush, it works so well as is.
Whoever committed but hasn't paid should own up. This is one hell of a mod, actually made my car much more enjoyable to drive and it's a snap to install...thanks to RR.
Just do it. You won't regret it.
Eifuku 04-14-2008, 09:45 AM Bump for RR. I sent in my payment and waiver early last week and I had my module by Friday - that's FAST.

Zephyrzone 04-16-2008, 01:12 PM BTW> My 8 is in for minor service (seatbelt squeaks) today and they lent me a 2008 6. Both front windows have auto down AND up (they retract with light pressure), but the sunroof doesn't have auto close....or....<drumroll please>...AUTO OPEN?! Wha? I just don't get Mazda sometimes. I like to blame it on Ford.
Or sunroof is better than their sunroof and now with Rodger's mod it's WAY better.

Zephyrzone 04-17-2008, 10:17 PM Great mod. Love it. I've used it everyday (literally) since I've had it.
TheWulf 04-18-2008, 04:06 PM Got mine yesterday, will install it tonight!
Great workmanship on this part!
Rotary Rasp 04-18-2008, 07:06 PM I'm making another shipment tomorrow. Get your orders in!
thoamsyu3515 - I need your waiver before I can ship!
TheWulf 04-18-2008, 08:30 PM Got mine in and everything works! I love this mod.
One minor issue though: If you manually stop your sunroof in a position that is not fully opened or closed (ex half way) the buttons stop responding for about 30 seconds. Is this normal?
The reason I noticed this is that I something like my sunroof in the "big tilt" position (tilted farther open than the regular tilt by hitting slide then stopping it once its all the way up but hasn't started to move back though.
I can live with it but I just wanted to make sure it's an expected side effect.
edit: Close button seems to sometimes not work when the sunroof is open? If I re-hit open then close it works though. Most of the time it works fine but randomly it won't do anything.
Worth noting is that I had to pull off the wire tap and put it back on as it missed the orange wire the first time :-/ Since that means an extra gash in the red wire because of it, would that make the connection less stable?

Here's the deal with that. You need to wait about 4 seconds before pressing the button again. Every time you press it before that, it resets and adds another 4 seconds. Thats why it feels like 30 seconds. If you want to move it after stopping it half way, count to 4 first. The buttons should work fine after that.

Was the engine running while you had this problem?
raizen82 04-19-2008, 01:11 AM got my replacement and installed. works like a charm now. issues mentioned by TheWulf i think are normal as rodger has explained, the delay that is.

laythor 04-19-2008, 03:44 PM people who are too stupid to figure out how to work a simple mod deserve to go around one handed.
TheWulf 04-20-2008, 08:56 PM Ok so yesterday I was going to try out that 4 second thing and something else decided to happen :-/
Opened the sunroof, drove like 10 mins, hit the close and it didn't auto-close (just the normal few inches). Hit it again, same thing. Hit it a third time and none of the controls worked anymore :-/
Happens I blew the 7.5A fuse that this is hooked up to. I took the mod out for now to make sure it didn't blow again, and I wanted to check with you as to possible cause. Should I put it back in? Should I upgrade that fuse?
Sidenote: anyone else find it odd that the same fuse is used for sunroof controls, seatwarmers and HVAC but the maplights are on a diff fuse?

I connected the module as instructed to the proper wires and screws, but the sunroof switch is dead with the power wire connected to the screw on the map light assembly circuit board. This is the screw closest to the blue wire. When I disconnect it, the sunroof switch works fine, but when I connect it nothing happens. My guess is that the module is the problem, but I am open to suggestions. Help! My map light assembly is dangling in my car until I find out whether I need to uninstall this module, reconnect something, or ?? :banghead:

My map light assembly is dangling in my car until I find out whether I need to uninstall this module, reconnect something, or ?? :banghead:
ew, i've had about 5 people with your same problem. A few of the 555 timers I used we're made by a different company and can't handle the load of the sunroof. I've made a slight modification that will fix this problem. I'll send you a replacement this weekend.
For those who already have it installed, don't worry. If the module works for a day or so, you have the better 555 timer and you have nothing to worry about.
Sorry for the problems.
ProfDean 05-13-2008, 01:30 PM Thanks for the prompt reply, and on your birthday no less! I appreciate you sending a replacement. I will put my map light assembly back together and wait for the new module. Sorry to bother you on your birthday. :)
m4f1050 05-14-2008, 10:48 PM Can't wait to get mine! I hope it has the right 555-1212... :)
type59 05-15-2008, 03:16 PM Ok so yesterday I was going to try out that 4 second thing and something else decided to happen :-/
Sidenote: anyone else find it odd that the same fuse is used for sunroof controls, seatwarmers and HVAC but the maplights are on a diff fuse?
wheres that fuse?
mine worked fine at first. then it just stopped working. but my sunroof still works fine, just not the one touch close.

How long did it work for? Did I already send you a replacement?

that was the same thing that happened to me. might be the bad 555 timers that RR mentioned. he replaced mine and have no problems now.
goofydragon 05-16-2008, 12:31 PM finally got some time to intall mine. Works like a champ. I love it. Thanks RR for your hard work and fantastic modification.
Rotary Rasp 05-20-2008, 10:24 PM Sorry, finals are this week so I've been slacking on getting these made and mailed.
Everything will be mailed by Friday.

ehhh, dont sweat this stuff too much. you have a GREAT reputation here, and your education is MC more important than rushing a module out a few days sooner
:)
laythor 05-21-2008, 01:05 PM Is it ok to use the sun roof to crack walnuts? I'm afraid to try my hand.
^that's a good way to test it... why didn't i think of that?...
m4f1050 05-21-2008, 04:00 PM What's the hold up? I still haven't received my module. It's been quite a while now... Paid with PayPal and sent waiver signed.

ProfDean 05-27-2008, 08:42 AM RR,
Were you able to mail the new modules out on Friday? I understand the final exam situation. I had about 40 final exams to grade last week and will be mailing out the last of them this morning to my students.
m4f1050 05-29-2008, 12:20 PM Well, it's almost 2nd Friday and no news or tracking #'s?
Any update RR?
Rotary Rasp 05-29-2008, 01:12 PM I mailed all but 2 of them on tuesday morning. Neither of those two people are in this thread.
ProfDean 05-31-2008, 11:57 AM RR,
I got mine yesterday (Friday) and just installed it. It works great! Thanks resolving this problem and getting out the replacements to all of us that were affected by the bad 555 timers. I appreciate your efforts and I assume the others do as well. Have a great weekend!
Dean
