Yeah... so I borrowed my friend's truck so I can haul some things around and in return, I let him borrow my car. Well, he crashed it, I don't know into what yet... Here are some pictures of my sad sad car...

Bent Oil Cooler

Well, look on the bright side: I have an uncle who runs a auto repair shop so... Body Kit time!

Let's play a game, guesstimate how much the damage is!

Spinning Sushi

Well, I can tell that there's some internal damage. Steering is a huge problem now, I believe some suspension components are damaged. The oil cooler is damaged as well, I will go check underneath it right now to see if there's anything else damaged.

The fender's crushed all the way in. Also, it moved the strut bar a bit, wouldn't that effect the frame on the other side of the car as well? So does that means that there's frame damage?

Find a good shop, don't have to go with what insurance recommends. Get it fixed right!

I was debating between the Mazda Dealership and my uncle for the car repairs... I'm leaning towards Mazda right now due to the possibility of frame damage. My Mazda Dealership has a collision center there.

I checked the oil cooler again just right now. The oil cooler is in good condition and does not need to be replaced, it's just the metal piece that's designed to absorb the impact got bent.

John, I think the frame might be damaged from looking at the pics, I estimate about 7000-9000 dollars of damage on this. the cosmetics is nothing man

but your car's suspension will need huge work......and steering rack, end link and sway bar should be damaged -..-

This is kinda tough one. How do you feel about possibly going back and screaming at your Uncle in the case where it takes a few times to get it right? This has nothing to do with his ability in any way shape ro form, but I want someone I can rant at until they get it right.
I'd still ask around locally..and you know enough guys out there that can point you in the right direction.......even if it is the dealer. Just make sure they understand that you won't settle for less than back to how it was and you are prepared to bring it in over, and over, and over again.....until they get it right.

I see, yeah, that makes sense. There's this really famous collision place near where I work, I'll check there later on today or tomorrow.

yes, i'm sorry to say but it looks like you do have minor frame damage. it seemslike an easier fix that you would think, but my guess would be 12k in repairs. i'm upping the price because many shops do not have a lot of experience with rx8s. but anyway

Well, I just got back from his place. Luckily, we sat down and had a long discussion... man the tension over his dining table was insane. We called the HIS insurance company and they decided to pay for my damage. So basically, his insurance company is going to cover everything... now, unfortunately his insurance company does not provide me with a rental and I'm afraid to drive my other car (240SX with an RB20 Swap) since it's super unreliable...

I say total it and make him buy you a new one. I absolutely refuse to own any car with frame damage.
How bad would a car be with some frame damage? I know the structural rigidity of the car will go down but how much? I don't really track the car (Once in a year for fun or so) and it's mostly used as a daily driver.

Spinning Sushi

You are correct, it was a guardrail. Apparently, a car cut him off and he swerve to avoid it, unfortunately... the 8's end kicked out and the front face planted into the guardrail. He went into a state of panic and ignored the other car the cut him off and didn't get his license plate down. This was all on the on-ramp onto the freeway (22 East from Magnolia for those of you who knows where that is) and the ramp was wet, probably from them watering the plants alongside the freeway.

If the frame damage is repaired well, it shouldn't be a huge issue. I'm just incredibly anal with my car.

I'd say take the Miata until his insurance company finishes fixing your car.

TBH, I also wouldn't drive a Sports Car with Frame damage unless the Frame damage was completely fixed. Once the frame has a bend in it, that portion is more prone to bending in the future. Id say find a place to do it right, or try and get it totalled out and get a new one. Also, don't just look at the part of the frame that is obviously bent, but check out the connecting points which might have damage as well.

Sorry for your loss, but use this as a test to see how good of a friend you really have. It seems as though hes stepping up, and if he does... keep him, if not, get rid of him.

sleeperx8
03-10-2008, 01:15 AM
That really sucks... If the damages are as bad as everybody's guessing, you might be better off taking the pay out from the insurance company (if the car is considered "totalled") and going out and purchasing another GG off the forum.

At the very least, your friend seems apologetic enough, but the KBB on a '99 Miata with 80k miles is only about $8000.

well, besides the frame damage and possible structural rigidity, it'll also decrease it's value. that's a huge red flag for someone if they're interested in buying the car. good thing your friend wasn't a douche and realized he was fully responsible. but like the other guys said, the price of the miata won't even cover the price of the damages. that trade wouldn't be fair to you dude.

LionZoo
03-10-2008, 01:46 AM
Agree with everyone here in that a '99 Miata with 80k won't cover your damages. Three years ago I almost bought a '99 Miata with 45k, and back then I was only paying $9k and I'm guessing prices have only dropped since then. I'd honestly try to get it totaled. If the insurance company gives you a decent deal I'd run with it, especially with reports of people buying a leftover new '07 for $17,500.

03-10-2008, 01:48 AM

03-10-2008, 01:50 AM
he can give u the miata as a rental car for the time being. as a trade off for your damage....no.

i think that if you get the damage repaired correctly it should be fine, you don't track it so it won't effect your daily routine.

about the effect on resale. it all depends if you really want to sell it, me i plan to drive the car until the end of college, so if i got into an accident...oh well, as long as it is fixed, and you are happy with it, then it should be fine.

Spinning Sushi
03-10-2008, 01:53 AM
I'm actually planning on keeping this car for a while. I don't think I'll do the total option and have it repaired... of course, like what everyone been saying, I won't settle for less than a perfect repair so I'll constantly be on the shop's ass about it. As for the Miata, I'll turn that down and I'll drive my 240sx for the time being.

ouch, sorry to hear about this man. yah- it's always risky to borrow or loan cars. ppl aren't familiar w/ your car and don't know how to drive it properly. use "u-haul" next time. they have inexpensive truck rentals and would've saved u this grief.

well, with the miata as a loaner car, you also the risk of you possibly getting into an accident with his car, and then you'll be paying for his repairs and it'll be a never ending cycle of repaying each-other, so good choice.

There are only two ways to fix frame damage...

sometimes they can bend it back, but it isn't that uncommon for them to weld an unbent section of frame onto the car. I've crated rx-8 frame "sections" for this purpose before.

The frame damage may have totaled the car, wait for the appraisal.

TrochoidMagic
03-10-2008, 03:08 AM
ouch dude... just saw the pics and the damages.

the frame is definitely damaged. and keeping it... i highly recommend you not keep it after repairs. the strut bar is bent... thats quite obvious its not good news and not good to keep car. even if its repairable, just flip it around and sell it.

trust me on this. it'll end up costing you less money and headache in the long run.
and the reason why i will not ever keep any more cars that suffered damage from the suspension on up.

if you can get the miata+plus cash and sell ur car. its not a bad option if you can live with that... those miata's have potential. and the benefit of gas saving and others.

think about it... remember, its not like you NEED a 4 seater right now. but if you do...make the deal work for YOU.

anyway, bottom line is DON'T keep the car. repaired or not.

TrochoidMagic

john, DO NOT KEEP THE CAR! remember...

i might just tell you now... i ended up just scraping my old honda and buying a shell and vtec swapped my old honda. and man, was that sweet relieve. and the knowledge/labor i gained was more bearable than having a damage framed car that drained my money and time.

and then this other FD i am building off of me! im lookin for 13k for it, it will have a fresh rebuilt motor, 100k, clean title! 5 speed, all black CLEAN interior! and since im still building the motor, we can put all other kinda goodies on the car while im at it =) aka. single turbo, flywheel, etc.

Didn't even think about that Phat. John I can vouch for the FD its WAY CLEAN. And my buddy phatty face here is a rotary master. You might wanna take a look into it if it raises your interest.

Let's not kid ourselves here; while the RX-8 is a great dual purpose car, the S2000 is a much more focused performance car. They're really cars for different missions, thought both of them offer a fair deal of driving fun. Myself personally, if the S2000 with hardtop had been the same price as a RX-8, I'd be driving a S2000 right now.

If you are still looking at getting a new car I would advise NOT getting an FD. As awsome as they are and fun to drive they do not make a good daily driver. For 1 they are 15-13 years old and unreliable (for the most part). Its very hard to find one thats well taken care of as well as cutting your mpg to half the 8's. I LOVE my FD but would never count on it getting me to work everyday. As much as I hate to say it, in your situation the s2000 is a much better choice. My .02

cars a tough little beast. doesnt look it, but the frame is hardy. i SLAMMED a telephone pole and my whole suspension went, rear and front, but no real frame damage. drives straight as an arrow

we do? surf city which is now owned by tustin to me still seems sucky.(dunno if they got a collision center) tustin/irvine themselves send it out to autobodyusa. only good dealer ive been to is browning but theyre pretty far from us.

I was debating between the Mazda Dealership and my uncle for the car repairs... I'm leaning towards Mazda right now due to the possibility of frame damage. My Mazda Dealership has a collision center there.

UPDATE:
So, I was suppose to get my car back last Thursday or Friday...
They accidentally ordered the non-HID passenger light housing...
So now they're saying it's going to be done Monday (tomorrow) or Tuesday.

overall i gotta give shine some credit - the fitment seems pretty damn good. i'm definately no pro - but if i were to give an overall grade - i'd say a B+ :)

Replaced it with clear corners and fixed the fitment issue for the corners. Unfortunately, no up close pic of it since it's too dark to take a pic of.

Here's a pic of my clears in the dark. :)

I swapped out my springs yesterday so now I'm running Swift Springs. I no longer have my RS*R's... Also, my RS*R's felt ALOT stiffer. I miss the lowness of the RS*R's already. Well, at least I don't scrape and bottom out my 8 anymore. :)
