View Full Version : Super stupid question: Why does our header have 3 runners (primary pipes)?
As the title says...
I know the 8 have the 13B-MSP engine (aka RENESIS), I also know it's a birotor.
What I don't understant is why the headers I saw here and there (I put the beautifull AutoExe one here as an example) have 3 runners... I mean, 2 rotors, 2 runners no?

Thanks for the replys... and I know i'm stupid. :banghead:
eviltwinkie 02-10-2008, 05:14 PM because we have three ports...
the center port is a siamese port...two into one...
kersh4w 02-10-2008, 11:04 PM mmm two into one.

So the Front & Rear Rotor both expell into on runner on the header?
staticlag 02-11-2008, 12:44 AM So the Front & Rear Rotor both expell into on runner on the header?
Just the middle one, its for a more efficient evacuation of the rotors during the exhaust phase. I believe testing has shown that the middle one produces more heat than the other two, probably safe to say that it flows a bit more also.
nycgps 02-11-2008, 12:49 AM because we have 3 exhaust ports ?
Think of a sandwich, 3 piece of bread, 2 pieces of meat.
B = Bread , M = Meat
B - M - B - M - B
Think of the Bread in the middle, compare to the other 2 pieces, the middle piece will absorb more meat juice than the other.
This is how the exhaust port looks like.
E = Exhaust , R = Rotor (or you can say Exhaust = housing, but lets keep it simple)
E - R - E - R - E
Same idea.
Rootski 02-11-2008, 01:00 AM Mmmmm.... exhaust meat....
eviltwinkie 02-11-2008, 01:39 AM So the Front & Rear Rotor both expell into on runner on the header?
Yes...they share that port...
Mmmmm.... exhaust meat....
I'm much more interested in the intake meat...but hey...whatever floats your boat you know...

All right people, enough innuendo.. :lol2:
YaRiX8 02-11-2008, 02:32 AM It's not a stupid question!! At least you asked yourself...I never tought about that, but now I know! thank you!
swoope 02-11-2008, 02:32 AM you missed bi rotor.. that would explain the meat in the sandwich.
beers

Thanx for all the reply guys!
... Now i'm gonna make myself a goooood sandwich! ;)

Wow...for the first time...I think I'm confused...

r0tor 02-11-2008, 10:34 AM if only that header didn't cost an arm, leg, and your first born child... i mean i'll happily give them my first born child, but missing an arm and a leg would severly limit my driving pleasure.
this thread is a good reason why I don't post that much anymore...

then you should chance your title thingi...
because your not a shit starter at all...
and i kinda was hoping to see you start some shit...
but your outta shit to start with it seems...
this thread is a good reason why I don't post that much anymore...
WTF is your problem?
I did a research here (I admit I didn't write it in my first post), found nothing valuable, I did a research on the NET (Wiki, Mazsport, etc), and I found nothing good enough.
I wanted a technical answer and I got it: The middle port is a siamese one.
Now go back to your "non-typing-mode", you will do everybody a favor here.

What's the problem with it? People actually answered the guy's question. That's the way it's supposed to be. He didn't know and that's OK. We're supposed to be here to help. Not everyone knows everything. It only turned to crap with your post which is not the way it's supposed to be. Contribute or don't post. It's really a simple concept.

Wow keef...I stand corrected...good job! You sir are indeed a shit starter!
TeamRX8 02-11-2008, 02:27 PM they have three pipes because most people still haven't figured out that this kind of header doesn't accomplish anything on a Renesis that can't be gotten out of a log manifold
rotarygod 02-11-2008, 02:30 PM What he really wanted to know wasn't why the header had 3 pipes as much as he wanted to know why does the engine have 3 exhaust ports and not 4.
Huey52 02-11-2008, 02:36 PM I still like nycgps's Big Mac analogy. :)
Actually, given the rotary's centrifugal exhaust stream, the takeoffs are more efficient than a log type.
they have three pipes because most people still haven't figured out that this kind of header doesn't accomplish anything on a Renesis that can't be gotten out of a log manifold
hahaha, I guess I did start some chit...
I learned from howstuffworks.com why there are 3 exhaust ports, that was before I owned an Rx-8... Not trying to hate, just being the middle grounds between those that say "you dumb" and those that simply answer...
Edit: Also, seems since I've iconed myself to be the "shit starter" a lot less shit has been thrown around... Yay! Exactly what I originally wanted... I've iconed myself to be the opposite! Pwn the system!

agreed, but I wasn't going to pass up another chance to try and talk some sense into people :wallbash:
PhillipM 02-11-2008, 08:01 PM The middle one is to run the flux capacitor, obviously.
Huey52 02-14-2008, 12:38 PM What he really wanted to know wasn't why the header had 3 pipes as much as he wanted to know why does the engine have 3 exhaust ports and not 4.
It does, two exhaust ports per rotor = 4 total...
======
SIDE INTAKE/SIDE EXHAUST PORTS
The key technology of RENESIS is its side exhaust port configuration, with the exhaust ports relocated to the rotary chamber side housing, where the intake ports are also located.
The chief advantage of this layout is that it allows elimination of intake/exhaust port timing overlap. This measure ensures that exhaust gas is not retained and carried over to the next intake cycle, thereby promoting more stable combustion and better fuel economy. *** The engine also has two exhaust ports per rotor chamber ****, giving RENESIS almost twice the exhaust port area of its predecessor. With ample exhaust port area assured, delaying the opening of the exhaust ports affords RENESIS a longer expansion cycle, for improved thermal efficiency, power output and fuel economy.
Another major advantage of the side exhaust port is that it allows engineers more freedom to optimize port profiles. With RENESIS, both the six-port High Power version and four-port Standard Power version have almost 30% more intake port cross-sectional area than the previous engine. Additionally, the intake port close timing has been extended, resulting in increased charging volume and more power.

rotarygod 02-14-2008, 03:58 PM Um, yeah I'm pretty sure I know that by now.
Huey52 02-14-2008, 05:05 PM I figured you did, being a rotary god and all, but your response might have been misleading to mere mortals. ;)
