Ok, so I've recently come into some free oil.... let me explain...

A friend of mine works for a VW dealership, and apparantly VW has started using full synthetic in all of their cars. Well, each car gets one case of oil, and one case of oil is 6 quarts, but the cars only use 5. Well, he has been collecting that extra bottle of oil for the past year, and his garage is getting full. He dropped by today and GAVE me 26 quarts of oil. That's good for what, 5 oil changes.... thats a good 1.5-2 years for me.

I don't know jack about oil weights, and just stick to what the owners manual says. And since my car is pretty much stock, and just a daily, I didn't see any reason why I should switch to full synthetic.

Well, the oil he gave me was Castrol Syntec 5w-40.

My question is... Is there any reason anyone can think of, why I shouldn't use this oil? Remember, it was 100% free, and I already have it sitting in my garage.

VW has been using 5w40 for their engines since ... I forgot. but its been a long while. Just like most other German made engines.

Hell if your friend's garage is full of oil .... I cant imagine what it is like. damn, thats like TONS of oil change :)

You're in Texas, so 5w40 is fine for you. I wish I have a friend like yours ...

P.S. :Can I pay your friend shipping so he can ship me maybe 50 bottles of those ? :)

It's a little bit heavier than whats recommended. I don't see any reason that you couldn't use it in the summer, considering you live that far south. I don't know about the winter, it may be too heavy.

In Japan HKS has 10w45 oil for RE only.

and they're much colder than us ....

so I think 5w40 is ok.

Really? Too heavy? What kinda drawbacks am I looking at? It doesn't get that cold down here. Every once in a while in dip into the 20's and 30's, but that only lasts for about a day. But during the winter time, it's usually in the 40's.

you'll be fine with the oil.

like I said, in Japan, they have much much colder weather and HKS japan still selling those oil for RE engines.

not all 26 quarts tho ... I just did an oil change couple days ago so ... maybe 1/2 quart and I'll hide the rest .... shhhh !

I am using the thinnest oil one can get and my engine loves it.

Are you insinuating that my thin oil causes excessive wear and heightened need for rebuilds?

The only reason I rebuilt my engine was because Mazda screwed up in the first place and I wasn't about to let their idiot mechanics in my area touch my car. The only Mazda tech I trust touching my car in in AZ and I am still in Detroit. The porting and all that was a secondary concern.

My point is that people miscontstrue the selection of oil viscosities.

for the oil thing, yeah Mazda did screw up. They forgot to readjust the thing for 5w20 and end up screwing everybody over ....

oh well, it should be fine now.

P.S. : I dont mind to get some Free 5w40 tho, where is it OP ! hook a buddy up ! :)

The 5W20 wasn't/isn't the issue. I don't know if this is still a secret to many people but Mazda screwed up on the OMP volumes(which was a PCM issue), hence the worn apex seals on my engine and most others from '04-'06. I have run Quaker State 5W20 for years, even with nitrous use, and my bearings and all other seals looked good after 49,540 miles. I now use 0W30 Mobil1 along with the Sohn Adapter. In warmer weather I had been running 10W30 but I may use Mobil1 5W30(as I get it for free from a friend).

No hard feelings on my end, I just didn't want readers to get the wrong message since they don't know we are friends.

I did my first oil change when I was about 1K miles with Advance Q 5w20 or another brand I dont remember exactly. but Im sure it was Full Synthetic :) then @ 5k miles I start with 5w30

most of u should know I use RP now. ppl said its expensive to use synthetic oil but I think 5.5 a quart is not that bad. :)

I am really looking forward to take my motor apart when I reach around 60K miles. Just to see whats inside, how everything is doing, and of course, to shut people up about Synthetic cause carbon in exhaust port issue.
My engine pulls strongggggg :)
