Hey guys... I am looking to buy the Pioneer Avic-N4 navigation system for $1050. I was wondering if anyone else has done something similar. I would like to know how difficult it is to install it. If it is not very difficult to install, I would probably install it myself. I know you also have to buy a 1-din dash kit, which I found on ebay for $210. If anyone knows how much it will cost in total, including an adapter to be able to use the steering wheels controls, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I don't know any remote control adapter that is just plug and play. Also with that kit I believe you have to do the wiring yourself. Consider the corksport kit which is 2din and comes with an adapter harness.

Yeah You'd probably be A LOT happier with the corksport kit (corksport.com) and the Pioneer Avic Z2 or Z1
here is mine (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=121032) with a review of how easy the install is

What about the Pie adapter at Mazdaparts.com? Doesn't that allow you to use the steering wheel controls?

Are you talking about these?

That is only used to add aux input to stock headunit.

If I go to the corksport route, I was wondering one thin. Do you guys find it difficult to pay attention to the road and read the nav at the same time? Thanks.

I've read about quite a few people using one of those learning IR blasters, but the general consensus seems to agree that they pretty much all around suck. However, if you have any technically adept friends, I recently read an article about using a microcontroller to monitor the outputs of a steering wheel controller and convert it to the format that a head unit wanted. I'll see if I can dig it up.
