Thanks in advance for checking the thread out.

As posted earlier I'm looking to purchase an Rx-8 in the next few months, just waiting for the right one.

I'm looking to purchase in Calgary but it seems like Rx-8 are really expensive in calgary. Looking at autotrader it seems like 2004 GTs are going for around $25,000 dollars.

Is this really how much I should expect to pay in calgary for a 2004 GT? Or is this a phenomenon of people thinking they can get way more then their car is worth on autotrader?

Looking at the states it seems like the going rate for an RX-8 is around 16-17k. Even with shipping and importing fees/taxes that would be well under 20k. Has anyone done this before?

Also it seems like Ontario's RX-8 are much cheaper then here in Calgary. I am originally from Toronto (just moved here a few months ago) and am going back for a few weeks in December. Would it be smart to purchase a vehicle in Toronto and have it shipped to Calgary?

But Alberta has no sales tax...if you buy it in Ontario, you'd have to add on 8%.

If I buy a used RX-8 in the states its not a problem, only an issue with new cars.

Also in terms of saving the sales tax, not an issue as you can claim the 8% and get it back from the government with proof that the car was removed from ontario.

Ah didn't know that...do you get it back from the Ontario gov't or from Alberta's?

I guess if you bought it used from a private seller in the States you could end up saving a lot of money (that is if you have the cash upfront to buy it outright). Not sure how the warranty will work though.

If the price discrepency is what I think it is between canada and USA, I feel like i'm better off going to the
states even without a warranty as I'd be saving 10,000 dollars which is likely much more then the actual total
cost of repairs that I would incur.

Just look up the blackbook value on toyota.ca and go from there. I'd imagine the 2004 being pretty worthless these days.

WRONG, it depends on the manufacturer......people have contacted Mazda and warranty IS transferable to Canada.

Lots of potential savings in the States -you'd be nuts to buy up here.

Friend just saved $12k on an MDX, another saved $14k on a Pathfinder.....

Honda said no to the warranty, but Nissan is OK with it.

Well I bought up here.....but that's 'cause I got 1.9% financing and I saved $8,000 off the MSRP, (I technically saved more 'cause it included this $3500 package as an incentive). If you have the cold hard cash then yes, you save hella, but you're a) not going to get financing in the USA, and b) you have to have stupidly good credit to get a private loan without having the vehicle as security collateral.

Well it's NOW public info, but my girlfriend is an econ major and they got the inside scoop a while ago!

I contacted mazda in Calgary and they informed me taht the warranty is non transferable. If the car has been registered in the states and then brought to Canada I would have to have it serviced in the states.

I traded in my 2005 black 6 sp GS in July/07. The dealer, Select Mazda in Stoneycreek, Ont still has the car and wants $23995.00 for it. I was the only owner and the car was taken care of. All scheduled Mazda service was done at a Mazda dealer. No accidents. In mint condition with 54K.

From the post above seems like the 22,500 for the 05 GT is a bit low if that dealer wants 24K for a GS with more kilometers on it. I guess that can be your opening bid

ideally I'd like to pay 25000 or less on the road for a 2005 GT. Looks like the going rate for those in the states is at the high end around 18000 dollars. Imported that would be about

Uhhh, why don't you call MAZDA CANADA, not Mazda in Calgary. They're just a franchise.
