View Full Version : Scratched Shift Knob
daddyg 10-16-2007, 12:11 PM Hey there
Wondering if anyone has experienced this. The standard factory installed rotary shaped knob has gotten a lot of what looks like nicks and scratches on it.
I do not wear jewellery that would scratch it - so not sure how it's gotten like that. Is it just poorly crafted alloy?
Anyone else find that? Not sure I want to replace it or not.
I have a TON of scratches on mine... but I have a ring on one finger....
Would it be possible to sand it down and give it a brushed metal look? :p:
spd frk 10-16-2007, 02:30 PM I have the same. I don't wear rings or anything, but it doesn't bother me so I just live with it.
philsbluerx8 10-16-2007, 02:52 PM my does have it too....but i think the worest is my steering wheel cuz i have a ring on my left hand........
Makiavel 10-16-2007, 03:29 PM Don't bother it'splastic under, mine is so used that i can see the clear plastic!
It's a nice shifter but i'll change it for something else more durable.
TurboEight 10-16-2007, 05:31 PM mine is still in perect condition, no scratchs no nothing, i dont know what you guyz use yours for other then changing gears=P
zerobio 10-16-2007, 05:38 PM Hope it's only through much use that mine gets to the scratched point. But I don't think I'd care that much and could easily replace it. Pics please of scratched shifters (not knobs, haha).
climacus 10-16-2007, 06:03 PM Might as well switch out the OEM knob for something smaller and less mushy.
But I like the triangle! Are there lots of shift knobs out there that look rotor-like?

I wonder if there are more scratches on right-hand drive vehicles than left. Probably, especially married drivers.
Blazed 02-27-2008, 01:10 PM I have a bunch of scratches and i dont even wear a ring.
P.S. Does anyone know if this shift knob will fit on my manual rx8? http://www.shaneracing.com/RX8_Shift_Knob2.jpg

By any chance is that the engineering ring on your pinky that's scratching it up?

haha, I knew it. cause mine is scratched up like that also, for the same reason. You Elec? BTW, I'll be in Vancouver tomorrow, and i'm going to attend your BCRX8 shine session the following Saturday. I'll see you there.
If you're going, which car is yours?

iagraham 03-25-2011, 05:22 PM You guys could try this...

I've bought there rotary accents, good stuff.
K.C.C. 03-29-2011, 11:42 AM I didn't read the whole thread but my knob was scratched up badly when I purchased my car used. One of the vendors on this forum, something FX, sells these covers that you can glue over the rotary metal part. Prep the surface well, slap on the glue and it should never fall off. One can't really tell that it is a cover.
EDIT: just checked the link the guy above me supplied. That's the stuff I'm talking about.
