Squeaky auto day/night mirror

Anyone else have a squeaky auto day/night mirror? Mine just loves to buzz along to the music coming out of the speakers or the road surface.

Not only is the performance of the mirror lacking--the build quality too.

Drives me crazy. Anyone have a solution?

Mine used to rattle a lot...drove me friggin nuts!!! I ended up buying double sided tape and putting it along the top seam. It's been on there for over 2 years now, and did the trick! (not sure why I did double sided tape...I'm sure regular tape would work just the same)

Mine squeaks and i just squeeze it and it goes away for a while.

Another trick is putting painter's tape or other opaque tape over the front sensor so it thinks it's darker and dims the mirror better. I prefer my old manual flip mirror on my older cars.

Yeah my driver side one rattles. Sometimes I can't hear it with the wind when the windows down or up or I have the radio turned up. Its not so bad when I'm driving. So it don't bug me. I guess if it gets real bad I'll put some tape on it. Thanks for the tip j67345.

I can't find it right now, but there is a DIY on this forum for fixing the rear-view. I'll post the link tonight or tomorrow- I'm about to implement this fix myself. Basically you take the mirror out of the car, separate the two pieces (carefully), then outline the seam with rubber cement. You put it back together again, let it dry and *viola* no more noise.

It definitely seems like this will work. The DIY is very detailed.

Here:

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...earview+mirror

From the thread (credit to dsmdriver):

Rear view mirror rattle fix
Here's how to stop the rear view mirror rattle:

Tools needed:
Torx screwdriver
Small flat screwdriver
Old credit card
Rubber cement

1) Take the mirror out of the car. To do this, unplug the wire from the back of the mirror, then take the torx screw out from the spot where the mirror hooks to the glass.

2) Once the mirror is out, take it apart. On the top of the mirror, put a thin screwdriver in the slot that runs around the mirror. Push the screwdriver down, and lever it towards the glass. You should then be able to slide the screwdriver into the housing. Now take the credit card and put a corner of it in near the screwdriver. Slide the CC around the edges- this will release all of the catches. The catches down near the buttons can be tricky and just pulling it apart once you get down here works.

3) It will all now come apart in three pieces- the back shell, front bezel, and the mirror/electronic assembly. There isn't anything loose in here. Keep the mirror and front bezel together. Make sure that the little clear bit that lights up green/red stays lined up in the hole in the bezel.

4) Take the rubber cement and paint around the whole edge of the back half of the case. You might want to do a few coats, but do it semi quickly. Click the whole thing back together.

5) Put it back in the car and you're done. Works great, gets rid of the creaking between the two halves, and it's reversible if for some reason you ever want to open it up again. You could use epoxy, but that will never come apart again...

I've been thinking about doing this too, but I read in one of those posts that they redesigned the mirror sometime in late 04. Am I better off getting the new mirror or fixing the one I have? Will the dealer replace the one I have under warranty? (that one is probably a long shot since I'm at 28k miles and 2 1/2 years)

hey mine does this too~

I also give it a squeeze and it shuts up for a while.
Its been on my to-do list to fix it. I'd have the dealer take a look at it, but it's not very consistent (also they'd might say i'm past the adjustment period... [rattle fixes=adjustment, right?] - my wing mirrors also rattle on occasion too... *sigh*)

maybe I should just take it down and fix it. its not worth to drop my car off at dealership for 3 days for this.
