View Full Version : BC RX-8 – Mechanical Workshop (Sat, Oct. 27) – Learn How To Do It
http://www.bcrx8.ca/eldon/BCRX8_Banner.jpg
Have you ever wanted to learn how to install a new exhaust system? Or install new suspension? Or if you’re like me, learn how to change your own oil?
Well, here’s your chance! On Saturday, October 27, BC RX-8 is hosting a Mechanical Workshop in Vancouver! The resident experts in our club will show you how to get things done!
Date: Saturday, October 27, 2007
Time: 11:30am (We'll meet up, then go have lunch nearby)
Location: Members Only Info - Will PM members about location.
This is a BC RX-8 Members Only event. If you're not a member yet, you can sign up to become a member at the event!
(For membership info, follow this link: Membership Info (http://www.bcrx8.ca) and click on "Membership")
If you want to attend, sign up and write down what you would like to see get installed. Since we will need to have the parts ready to be installed, please make sure you only sign up for what you have to get installed. Eg. If you want to vote for suspensions, then you must have the suspensions there at the event. Or else, everyone may vote for suspensions, but there may not actually be any to be installed at the event.
We may not have time to accommodate everyone’s request, so the most popular items will be done. However, even if you already know how to do something, or even if you know how to do everything, still come out! You might learn a few new tricks!
Sample Activities (Suggestions only. Not limited to these):
Install:
Main Headlights
Clear Corners
Suspension
Exhaust
Short Shifter

delhi 10-10-2007, 01:33 PM so who's donor car?
sounds educational.
It's a bring your own car and bring your own parts event!
So if you have springs waiting to be installed, this is your chance.

Just to clarify, our experts will help you out at this event. They won't do all the work. You can't just sit back and relax. =P

Hahaha, lets clarify this a little more :lol2: this is to help teach members how to do maintenance and upgrades on their own car. Dress for work ;)

Depending on what kinds of things people want to do I think there will only be enough time to do a handful of instals and maintenance demos.
I would be willing to do my brake pad change only if there aren't many people who want other things done.
burnaby rx-8 10-10-2007, 06:29 PM I'd like to attend. Is this open to non-member as well?
This is open to all local rx-8 owners (even non bcrx8 members), but everyone will be leaving this event a bcrx8 member whether you like it or not! Muhahahah! :)
Seriously folks, these are the types of things that we can do if the local people help to support a club like ours. For the sponsors that bcrx8 has and the great people you'll meet and info that you'll get, bcrx8 membership is a no brainer.
Gyro_Bot 10-10-2007, 09:49 PM Should we attach the survey to this thread?
The email about the survey hasn't drawn a lot of responses so far. Perhaps a link here in this forum will give us better results?
I don't think we need a survey. People can just write whatever they want to see beside their names like we've done.
dannobre 10-10-2007, 11:34 PM So far....kinda boring guys :)

Hey common we need something "interesting" for our star mechanic to do.
"Oil Change" "Brake Replacement" boooring.....
Someone out there need to install a new Highflow Cat? how about new suspension?
Coil Overs? or perhaps a new Air Intake?
That would be fabulous to learn how to do those!
Maybe we could mix it up, one boring maintenance session, followed by a "This is how you install the first part of your Turbo!" or "Highflow Fuel Injector!"
(I know the turbo session would take several workshops to explain.... Tim cries with joy and anticipation)
zerobio 10-12-2007, 03:36 PM I would love to attend something like this ... and I NEED to. But I'm way out here in Ontario. If there was every one of these in Toronto or London (yeah right), I'd definitely be in.

sorry, west coast is the best coast! :)
Hmmm... Just the three of us?
Maybe people are not signing up because they don't want to vote on anything and will just come watch whatever it is we're going? If that's the case, still, sign up! Just write your name down and nothing else.

Gyro_Bot 10-18-2007, 12:30 PM how about installing side aero flares? Anyone done it?
You mean the Strakes?
The silver/chrome flanges that affix to the gills behind the wheel well?
YUP! I've done em. Their easy! If you show up for the mechanical workshop, I'll show (if you like) how to do this in under 5 minutes. We can do this while we wait for the workshop to start.
The hardest part is lining them up so they appear parallel.
delhi 10-18-2007, 12:42 PM No not strakes. Those side-skirts that come with the Appearance Package....

OMG BCRX8 members have been busy posting pretty much dominating the Canadian forum and have had dozens threads with hundreds of posts, where have you been? Well now that you know, spread the word.
We just formed BCRX8 up in spring so we haven't had a chance to make it out to autoX events yet. Next season for sure though.
terrypk1 10-18-2007, 08:44 PM lol..THANKS Burnaby 8. there are SLUSH Series if you are in for some cold action just on the day after this event.
delhi 10-18-2007, 09:35 PM keep me updated for the Pitt Meadows events. it's close to home than BB.

dannobre 10-22-2007, 01:46 AM Terrypk1....What type of suspension........Time for install will depend on what it is....
terrypk1 10-22-2007, 06:27 AM it's JIC type 2.
yeah that something i was thinking over as well.
it seems impossible
Gyro_Bot 10-22-2007, 01:17 PM I would like to propose we tear apart my drivers door, and figure out how to remove the disarm function from the door lock mechanism.
I got my door, and I'll risk my warranty. I want my car to have a chance next time.:crying: :crying:
dannobre 10-22-2007, 08:43 PM JIC install will be about 2 hours...less on a lift with air tools

that sounds like a good project for another workshop in itself. Maybe we should wait a bit on that one to make sure we know what we are doing. Non of us have attempted this before so I'm guessing that it would take up a lot of time. Once we know what we are doing with the fix for this then we could all do it at the same time. I think we should keep things simple for this mech workshop though. what do you guys think?

yeah... maybe just stick with stuff that people know how to do... (like the suspension install). I think this kind of exploratory work should be saved for a workshop titled, "Let's Figure Out How To Do It Together". :)
terrypk1 10-23-2007, 08:54 PM thanks Dannobre...so can we have an update of time and location and also some of the things that we will be seeing before the end of thursday?
thanks Dannobre...so can we have an update of time and location and also some of the things that we will be seeing before the end of thursday?
I've updated the original post with the event time (11:30am).
The location will only be disclosed to members of the BC RX-8 Club.
Looks like we should be able to get around to installing your suspensions... And maybe one or two other items on the list.
So the location of the workshop is in Vancouver.
I've emailed the exact location to all the BC RX-8 members who have signed on to attend the workshop. Please let me know if the email didn't get to you. :)

Wow! Another incredibly successful event! This was totally awesome!
Watching Dannobre, terrypk1 and his brother install the JIC suspension. Fantastic!
And thanks to StefYVR, at least four of our cars now have protection against the common Mazda break-in technique!
This was a bunch of fun! Seriously! We should definately do this again.
Thanks to everyone for coming out!
burnaby rx-8 10-29-2007, 09:02 PM This past event was exactly why we formed BCRX8 over the summer. Taking advantage of the knowledge and experience that we have as individuals for the benefit of the entire group. Thanks to all who came out and continue to support our club. It was great to meet 3 new valuable members in Terry, Johnny, and Van. BTW, can you 3 guys PM me your membership info so I can add you to our official BCRX8 members list?
Gyro_Bot 10-30-2007, 05:59 PM That was a great event!
Watching Dan. Johnny and Terry work on the suspension was informative, and actually entertaining!
I am absolutely delighted to have the Mazda Security Flaw fixed on my car. Now the car can't be broken into without setting off the alarm! Just the way it was meant to be, the day I purchased the car!
FANTASTIC! is all I can say. This workshop was excellent. I hope there are more, I will certainly attend!
